At least that's what John Koller, head of marketing for Sony Computer Entertainment of America, told VG247 earlier this week. "We had our largest sales year ever last year, and we'd look to go about 10-15 percent north of that this year," Koller said of the PSP, citing the upcoming software packs and software lineup as reason for his confidence. Continuing, Koller noted, "We also had our best sales year for PS3 last year and we'll look to go north of that by a similar percentage," again citing upcoming software bundles and lineup as driving the increased numbers.
So we put the numbers for Sony's PS3 in 2008 against those of the previous year and found it sold just like Koller said (as seen in the graph above), with PS3 sales increasing by 40 percent. In fact, we spoke with Jesse Divnich, director of analyst services at EEDAR, who said Koller's numbers are modest, with EEDAR company predicting a 25 percent increase in PlayStation 3 sales this year and a 16 percent increase for PSP sales. Even averaged together, that's still an over 20 percent increase predicted for this year. So, maybe 2008 was the year of the PS3 after all?

I have a feeling this year's E3 is going to get nasty.
Anyways I don't care about numbers, but hey Sony you know what I DO care about? The next ****ing ICO/SoTC game, bring it!!

I bought mine last week and really enjoy it so far, especially the silence since my 360 is so freaking loud. My brother bought one as well once we started playing some Killzone 2 and MGS4 on mine.

I think it will probably increase because of the realse of killer apps, but still wont beat the 360's sales because of the realese of the xbox's most popular game(halo ODST) but if god of war 3 makes it this year, it 's enough to compete with it.....

You know, I don't really get the "First" crap. Is there a reason for doing this? I have been on the internet since its mainstream inception and I never understood this. Is there a feeling of accomplishment or pride when all you do after reading a news story or blog is type "First!!!111!!!"? It shows no intelligence and usually it gets you downvoted (or your comment deleted, or banned, or lambasted by regulars).
I prefer putting my thoughts to words carefully and succinctly so that if someone comes along and reads my opinion, they will actually think about what I say and respond intelligently. My pride might swell a bit when I get upvoted to blue status on the Joystiq sites but not to the point that I feel gifted or smarter than anyone.
Its not like you get a prize or anything for being first, right?

As much as I don't understand the whole "First!" ethos, I also don't understand why people get so upset about it.

huh, lambasted. While I have heard that word before, the only thing that combs to mind is a delicious rack of lamb basted in a sweet barbecue sauce.

If they want to see sales sky rocket then they should bundle the psp with ps3 for 399.

That's a damned good idea. I would've loved that when I paid $499 for my 60GB back in 2007. Oh well. Too bad that's suicide in terms of profit.

Be a pretty damn good offer tying the two together, with Remote Play, the Video swapping of the new 2.70 update, both have pretty similar features ( ie Wi-Fi browser etc) and you can get PSN games off the PS3 store.
MY only problem is theres like 3 games on the PSP I wanna play, but I wouldn't mind a cheap 2000 to stick on custom firmware for emulated goodness.

Hmm, you can see the fasion trendd there,
360 & Ps3 are both rising, and also comparing PS3 to ps2 in years 06.7 & 8, PS3 was more popular than the Ps2 in 08.
And of course wii just totaly Owned the charts no surprise there, but this year i think PS3 will rise abit more, due to the software line up.
Cant say the same of PS2 though.
Xbox has the Uber King marketing team on Third party titles, so they will sure rise also, (especialy with the price tag on it.)

So much for the PS2 eating into the Wii's market share. I don't care HOW cheap you make it, it's just... DAAAAAMN!
No PSP numbers? As much as I think Sony have been idiots the last few years, I still want them to be making money on something.

uh, have you seen the number of games being released for 09/10 and how known some of the IPs are...?
Just to name a few:
Dissidia:Final Fantasy
Locoroco 2
Patapon 2
Prinny
Resistance Retribution
Phantasy Star portable
Persona
LittleBigPlanet
Motorstorm:Arctic Edge
Assassin's Creed
Rock Band
Disgaea 2
.hack//LINK
Tenchu 4
Kingdom Hearts Birth By Sleep
Jak and Daxter The Lost Frontier
Tales of Versus
Silent Hill Shattered Memories
And Im missing many more titles....
So yah, as far as PSP goes, it is hard to not expect a raise of PSP units sold for this and the upcoming year.
The PS3 is also on the same boat, with many of the 1st party games being released this or next year.

@Noshino: List of games didn't work in 2007, it didn't work in 2008, and that leads me to believe it won't work in 2009.
The PS3 has more problems that just lack of games people wants. Sony is a group of giggling cockheads. I don't have anything against the PS3 itself as far as a hardware platform goes other than the Cell was a retarded choice for a CPU. Is it usable? Yea. Is it practical? No. That aside, my beef is with the arrogant assholes that are behind the PS3. Mark my words, these idiots will wait until after the next Xbox comes out and start saying how they won "the war" because they were the last to release a console. PS3's problem is Sony itself.

uh, it didn't because, although there were indeed games of known IPs and there were some new quality ones as well, the variety, amount and quality of them was NOWHERE near the same as this year.
Like I said, that list that I put above? that's about a third of what it is to be released on the next 2 years, and reportedly there are more to come at E3.
"The PS3 has more problems that just lack of games people wants"
Sorry, but that's bullshit, I ll explain a bit further in a bit

I know they are idiots, but don't confuse management with the engineers and developers. The Cell was far from a retarded decision, and it is proving to be practical. It was new technology, and as such, as shown, it has taken them a while to get the hang of, but hell, both, their engineers and developers are squeezing it and are trying to make the most out of it, and it shows on the games and how the UI gets better and better.
The problem has been with the company's management from the get-go, not only from promising and not achieving some goals, but also from the selection of games that they approved for development. Those are, once again, MANAGEMENT decisions. Personally, I blame Idei for it, would have loved to see how Kutaragi would have taken the PS line, the man was a genius...

LameDuck, Cell is an excellent CPU. Killzone 2 and Uncharted (to mention a few) are good examples of what it can do. It uses another technology than a PC CPU, so you have to learn how it works. And when you have finally thaught, its probably alot easier to develop games on further. Insomniac has gotten good with it.
I dont have any problems with Sony, I bought a PS3 for a decent price. And its totally worth it. I neither think a PS3 is expensive, remember it costs a tad more to produce it than it does when you buy it. And if you want a PC to handle Call of Duty: WAW just as well as the PS3 does, you will have to pay for a PC that costs more than the PS3 costs. So far Sony is doing an excellent job with the gaming line-up this year.
So I cant see how Sony is doing a bad job, except doing a price-cut on the PS3 (which does not necessarily have to be a profit for them).
