The fate of Interplay's long-held plans to create an MMO in the Fallout universe (assumedly heralded under the code name Project V13) has been in peril for quite some time now. Many feared the project would be scrapped when the title's creative director moved on to a different company, though a glimmer of light pierced the darkness yesterday -- Masthead Studios, developers of the upcoming post-apocalyptic MMO Earthrise, will be giving Interplay its proprietary tools and technology for use in Project V13.
Given our MMO-obsessed sister site Massively's positive hands-on experience with Earthrise at GDC, we're excited to see how this technology will be used in Interplay's MMO. Of course, there's always a chance that Project V13 has nothing to do with Fallout. Sure, there's plenty of evidence to the contrary, but Interplay could very well be working on an Earthworm Jim MMO, which ... well, which would be just as awesome.

Isn't solitude and fear of the unknown the primary draw to games like Fallout?

It would probably be faction based. You could be a raider, a Brotherhood of Steel, a tribal, Enclave whatever. Most of those guys work in teams anyway

I suppose that could work. Having a team of raiders would be pretty fun if done right.
I just dont think certain franchises belong in MMO form. Fallout (especially in its Bethesda form) is one of them. Being completely alone, listening to the Ink Spots at night and wandering into a Deathclaw just wouldn't be the same.

well Fallout 3 had companions like Fawkes, Paladin Cross, Charon etc. And besides, a lot of MMO players fly it solo for everything but group quests, and there are plenty of things in fallout where you're walking along and need to help out a squad of mercs or brothers

I agree 100% with you. In the case of an MMO if you had thousands of people in the same "map space" it wouldn't feel as dark, desolate and deserted as it does not. A MMO of fallout could be well made but it would have to have a -lot- of content to maintain the right kind of atmosphere in my opinion.

An Earthworm Jim MMO? Now THAT would be an MMO I'd be willing to sink a lot of money into. Earthworm Jim is just too much fun to play.

LOLz we just raided vault 69 for some uber l00t.
... doesn't have the same feel as cracking open a vault that looks like it hasn't been touched in decades and putting the pieces together of what happened to its residents.

Death to Mamoropogs! I swore to myself I'd never play one again after FFXI. But I love Fallout... *weeps*

Interesting that a company doing a post-apocolyptic MMORPG would license their tools to a competitor creating the same kind of game, but with the advantage of the well known annd respected license. Seems kind of suicidal. Or maybe they saw the writing on the wall and decided to get what they could out of the situation.?

Fallout would make a great mmo, Id love to see it in the graphic style above, with a top down view.
One of the great things about fallout was building up a big team of npcs (a robot, a dog, a robot dog, a death claw etc) then blasting around the towns and cities, (which by the way were filled with tons of npcs).
Saying this wouldn't make a good mmo because if doesn't fit in with Bethesda's version of fallout is like saying a mario game where he uses his feet to stomp enemies wouldn't work because Mario's main offence is tossing produce, it just wouldn't be the same without seeing those turnips fly. Sure Mario has done that, but the mario series is made up of more then just Mario 2.

Ah, Fallout 1, that screenshot brings back memories, being in the Hub. I still wonder what Fallout 3 (Van Buren) would have been like if Black Isle/Interplay had developed it. Fallout 3 isn't bad but doesn't have the charm the first two games did, I bet most here who have played 3 haven't played the first two, they were obscure back then and probably too dated for most today to play now.

I'd play it if they built it on the engine that was used to build Far Cry 2.
