Mods: Unreal Tournament meets Sonic the Hedgehog
In the past, we've seen a number of cool Unreal Tournament mods -- including that fascinating LEGO creation from a year ago -- but we've never seen anything quite like the Sonic the Hedgehog mod (posted after the break). The concept takes the gun-slinging action of Unreal Tournament to Sonic's Green Hill Zone. The mod looks just like the original level from the first Sonic game; it even sounds like it (listen to the bumper sound effects), though it's missing the original's catchy background music.
Just don't go showing this off to Sega. We don't want the company getting any bright ideas ... you know, like: "Sonic Shooters." Sonic and the Black Knight was just about all the innovation that we can handle.

lol

That's pretty awesome although no sonic music kills the mood, i guess they did that to avoid a lawsuit.
WiredKnight @ Apr 4th 2009 12:06AM
I'm guessing they did it because setting up the soundtrack in unreal is a little more difficult than you'd think. Totally doable, but they need a loopable track and a few other things set up to work properly.
If you want to talk lawsuit, they've already stolen the look of the levels, with the textures and other highly recognizable features. I'm not saying there's anything wrong with it, since they aren't doing it commercially and it's a nice little tribute, but if someone was looking to take legal action, I don't think adding the music would cross the line.
Just my two cents.
bm @ Apr 4th 2009 1:15AM
Actually most of the time it's the music that they go after first and foremost. Don't ask me why, just something I've noticed.
NoughtSoClever @ Apr 5th 2009 12:58AM
While Sega _could_ technically sue, it would be like Michael Jackson suing a 1990 style MJ impersonator. Present day Sonic is hardly recognizable anymore.
Mr Khan @ Apr 3rd 2009 7:17PM
I'm playing Sonic and the Black Knight tonight, and if it's anything like Secret Rings, you're going to have to answer to me
Mr Khan @ Apr 3rd 2009 7:19PM
More relevantly, i can't get the video to play :(
Mr. Lif @ Apr 3rd 2009 8:01PM
It's like Secret Rings
except ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE
Mr. Lif @ Apr 3rd 2009 8:02PM
(And I did play it, thank you very much. Haven't beaten it yet. Too busy with Wii/PS3 games that are actually good)
Phil @ Apr 3rd 2009 8:23PM
Good Wii games? What are you talkin' about?
Jacksons @ Apr 3rd 2009 8:25PM
I doubt you'll like it, Khan.
Mr Khan @ Apr 3rd 2009 9:20PM
I'm not seeing it. It starts a little slow, but Secret Rings did, too. The combat system is quite enjoyable, and this game has Knuckles.
Knuckles! i.e. the character that was completely excluded from Unleashed, and the most awesome character ever conceived by mankind.

Holy shit balls Batman 0_o. That's cool.

Dear Joystiq,
See: Shadow the Hedgehog, AKA SONIC WITH GUNS lol.
Ihavepants @ Apr 3rd 2009 11:04PM
The werehog had pretty big guns.
cknblade @ Apr 3rd 2009 11:42PM
*shudder*...Shadow the hedgehog.
All I remember is Shadow shouting "Damn!" over and over...
KeenCommander @ Apr 3rd 2009 7:22PM
I'm impressed, that actually looks more playable than some recent Sonic games.
OK, so I know that's not saying much.
pat1202003 @ Apr 3rd 2009 7:22PM
wtf
forestofdeath @ Apr 3rd 2009 7:40PM
what's with the starfox-esque commentary? o__O
Heh @ Apr 3rd 2009 7:57PM
Never played UT have you?
forestofdeath @ Apr 7th 2009 10:19PM
apparently it's been a while.
i never recalled their faces plastered in boxes like that. :P
Mr. Lif @ Apr 3rd 2009 8:04PM
WHY CAN'T THEY MAKE A SONIC GAME THAT LOOKS LIKE THAT
I rarely resort to allcaps but the backgrounds in that were just coool.
Mr. Lif @ Apr 3rd 2009 8:05PM
For clarification, I'm talking applying the old Sonic style to 2.5d environments
please do not mention Sonic Rivals, that thing is not good
Maverick Saturn @ Apr 3rd 2009 9:00PM
What about Sonic Heros :)
bm @ Apr 4th 2009 1:17AM
I think you meant to say it's "no good".

Man, sometimes I feel like I'm the only one who has enjoyed Sonic games as of late. Sonic '06 was good (sans the bugs), and Sonic and the Secret Rings was pretty fun. It even had a fun multiplayer mode!
I'm not saying that I'd rather play Sonic '06 or Secret Rings or Unleashed (which was also fun, both day and night) when given the opportunity to play UT3 with some friends or Phantasy Star Universe with friends, but it's still fun to play by yourself.
I don't think enough people actually play the Sonic games that they trash. I also think that reviewers have been jaded since they found out that Sonic Adventure wasn't supposed to directly compete with Mario 64 (excellent) or Super Mario Sunshine (crap).
Furthermore, 'Sandbox' games not only bore me, but I think have also caused some apathy toward story-driven adventure games. That's ADVENTURE games, not RPGs, for those who were about to bring up Mass Effect and stuff like that.
Nathan Graves @ Apr 3rd 2009 9:01PM
Dear Microsoft:
Fuck you
Sincerely: 360 fans that bought UTIII
CaramelZappa @ Apr 4th 2009 3:19AM
What does that have to do with microsoft? That you don't get mods? That's how microsoft runs the console buisness. They have control of everything. You can play it for PC (Which is also microsoft) and have access to modifying the game however you well please. You're the one who bought the 360 version.
Nathan Graves @ Apr 4th 2009 1:51PM
"You're the one who bought the 360 version."
Actually no, I haven't even rented the damn game (though the 20 dollar price tag tempted me for a time)
jojo biscuits @ Apr 4th 2009 8:33AM
I have the PS3 version and wish I had held out for the xbox360 version. Most of the mods are trash that do nothing more than fragment the already small user base. This one looks cool but would be a novelty that no one else would be playing. I would definitely give up the mods for a more focused user base.
Ranus Studios @ Apr 3rd 2009 9:25PM
I played an excellent UT2004 mod just like this some time ago, but it was a normal UT level (e.g. 3D, first person). Still, this certainly does look way more like a Sonic level than I'm comfortable with.
Stone @ Apr 3rd 2009 9:54PM
This is actually pretty funny. Imagine a bloody game like this with all sorts of game mascots running around each others worlds and having a frag fest.
wickedpheonix @ Apr 4th 2009 10:21AM
You mean like Super Smash Brothers Melee?
Bissy Boy (PSN johnnynumber5) @ Apr 3rd 2009 10:00PM
This reminds me of crash commando on the PSN.
yojimb0 @ Apr 3rd 2009 10:28PM
pretty tight
dogmaticatheist @ Apr 3rd 2009 10:47PM
If I owned UT3 I would download this mod.
DaveMcRae @ Apr 4th 2009 12:07AM
wow this is actually incredible
Cosmo @ Apr 4th 2009 12:11AM
Is this for the PS3 or PC version of the game? Too bad the 360 version doesn't allow mods.
Phizzy @ Apr 4th 2009 1:11AM
This is just a UT2D map, right? Not a whole mod...
Lee @ Apr 4th 2009 7:55AM
Epics need to hire out the writers of TeamFortress2 for some non cringeworthy insults.
Anticrawl @ Apr 4th 2009 10:37AM
Seeing the Lego Mod again made Red Faction seem a little less awesome.
Anticrawl @ Apr 4th 2009 10:40AM
Damn, I need to go check up on the latest mods and fire up UT3.
marcod @ Apr 4th 2009 11:29AM
Looks cool, if only I had Unreal Tournament... :(
MosquitoControl @ Apr 4th 2009 12:54PM
That's pretty close to crack.com's Abuse title from like, 12 years ago.
And that makes it awesome.
Peter Szijarto @ Apr 4th 2009 2:13PM
yea, just like crash commandos, except not nearly as good. good effort though.
