It's strange to see a Nintendo commercial that advertises one of the company's products to college-age dudes, but that's exactly what this DSi commercial seems to do. Most Nintendo commercials these days are aimed at, and feature, the "expanded audience" -- as in people other than the stereotypical male "gamer."
What's funny is how different the tone of the commercial is than others: like most Nintendo commercials, the two principals in this ad are using Nintendo consoles to be social; but these two dudes use the DSi's camera and photo manipulation features to be total jerks to each other.
I never said anything about race? I'm saying is that I'm in college and all I can think to myself is that, I would never buy that or sit around and do that with my buddies. Maybe kids would but not two guys who look like their in college.
uhm.. no actually im legally an adult but I do like to fool around like that but that commercial has no appeal to me. It's just so odd to me because when I mess around with my buddies I'd just crack some jokes and vice versa but I wouldnt be holding a DSi or want to. I get the joking part but I dont need a DSi to tell my friend that he's ugly.
Maybe it's just me, but when I got my DS lite the first thing I did was head into Picto-chat with a bunch of friends and start drawing stupid things while making fun of each other and their drawings. I was 22 and in college when I got my DS.
It sounds like you're just confused about your sexual oreintation and have insecurities about being taken seriously. Which is OK. You'll probably grow out of it, and into a man one day.
yes flame me now make homophobic remarks because you sure know what it takes to be a "man". If you cant even respect another man's opinion what are you then? It's an opinion. You guys act like it's the end of the world just because the commercial doesnt appeal to ME. I'm no Shooter lover, I love all game genres and have an open mind. I even pre ordered a DSi for my little brother because the one I gave him which I bought for myself since launch was worn out and messed up. It just isnt for me anymore though. Sometimes you grow up and could care less about some things from your childhood. It's life.
Don't forget that advertising will often depict what the target market aspires to be, not always exactly the type of person in the ad. So in this case, it's likely going for the younger kids that perceive those in the ad to be cool and maybe who they want to be like, an 'older brother worship' sort of thing.
For a moment there I thought it said "Tweet photos and sound" which would be a truly terrible thing. Now for the big question. Being as I'm in Tokyo but will be back in the UK next month... which region of DSi should I get?
Three minutes later, the two guys realize that this picture manipulation feature is only slightly more interesting than the pictochat, so they put the DSi down and regret every buying another DS.
I saw it the other day on either Comedy Central watching Important Things with Demetri Martin (best thing since Mitch Hedberg) or during Adult Swim. Got a chuckle out of it, and it ran at the appropriate time of day to catch the eyes of males 18-25 since Adult Swim reigns supreme in the ratings department there.
Looking forward to picking up my black DSi Sunday. Pre-ordered at a local store instead of one of the big ones so I wouldn't have to wait but turns out they aren't opening up a midnight which is rotten. Love the matte finish, I'm very obsessive about the condition of my gadgets and keeping them in pristine condition but the enamel finish on the DS Lite kept me from really tossing it around and enjoying it like a portable should be used. Plus I have my Gameboy Micro Famicom edition to keep me happy with GBA games (yes I do have to mention how awesome the little fun dispenser is in every handheld related post).
I hate and love Nintendo for their handhelds. They are superbly crafted, focus on what's most important in handheld gaming, and Nintendo is always improving them but as a gadget freak and gaming enthusiast I have to buy them all... and I have I'm ashamed to say (yes even Color Gameboy which is not to be confused with Gameboy Color and imports). The exception being pre-Gameboy Original systems.
I hear you with worrying about the finish on your gadgets but sometimes a matte finish can collect more visible marring than a durable gloss. Hopefully it's like the finish on the inside surfaces of the DS Lites, rather than a flat-paint sort of thing that shows fingerprint oil.
I saw this commercial, it was pretty good - I suppose there really isn't much else they can advertise about it yet - seeing as there are no DSi Specific games yet. (Aside from undoubtedly over priced download software)
I really hope this isn't the only DSi commercial Nintendo has out now(it's the only one I've seen so far), cause I do believe this commercial to be a complete waste. First off, they're marketing that photo manipulation nonsense to the wrong age group, I imagine dudes in their 20s will only find that entertaining for the first 5 mins, then not use it again(kinda like Pictochat). That commercial should have been targeted kids, that is the only age group that would get long-term entertainment from such a feature. I'm pretty sure people above 16 will not be buying a DSi for it's camera or that particular feature, especially if they already have a DS Lite and also considered that $40 premium over the DS Lite.
A commercial that advertises the possibilities of DSiWare, the SD slot, or even how the camera would interact with games, would have been a better choice. I hope they get it right with the next commercial.
You know, I think Nintendo's got this whole "advertising to your mum" thing down pretty well. This commercial made a gaming blog and it's readers pay attention, so evidently it worked.
Hmm, I don't thing the stoner demographic can afford a DSi, all their money obviously goes elsewhere.
@ Samuel D. Lockhart
I'm not saying that Nintendo should advertise the DSi to moms, and I'm sure getting the gaming community to pay attention is not the issue (Nintendo could do nothing and accomplish that), making us wanna buy the DSi is the goal here. I don't think such gimmicky photo manipulation would be of much interest to people in my age group( or is my expectations too high for people my age). If they had shown how the camera would work in games it would have been better. Plus most readers of this gaming blog already have a DS lite, if Nintendo wants to convince us to buy a DSi they need to show why it's better than the Lite.
Just last week I saw a Wii Fit commercial on the Soap Network. It looked like an infomercial, with customer testimonials and straightforward video of people using the product. It weirded me out. They were definitely marketing to the middle aged mom crowd.
I've been debating on getting this unit and with this commercial, I'm really thinking of getting it. Though I really want the Kingdom hearts edition that Joystiq teased with...
Wow, a commercial from Nintendo not featuring a down and out retarded female actress trying to show us how cool math minigames can be. It's just too bad it's a couple jocko cum garglers striking up the awkward after frat party gay sex conversation so common among the bromances of our days.
Dear Nintendo of America, why isn't Moving Memo going to be ready day 1? Have you done anything right in the past 10 years?
seriously nintendo? you really think 20 year olds and up would have fun with that feature? kids maybe, honestly what are they thinking, gee lets get suckers to pay more than a ds lite to do something you can do with a 50 dollar webcam! why isnt scarcastic gamer riping on these videos? yeah i know theres more to the dsi then the camera, with dsi ware, im taking a wait and see approach with that. i think its lame they are bribing people with the 1000 points for 5 crapy games for now, why didnt they do that with the wii then?
i shouldnt be mocking this video, i know will have fun with that feature and i wont deny that, hell thats first thing i plan to do tommorow when it get it and download the browser
