The pickin's have been mighty slim regarding details and sneak peeks for Sony and Zipper Interactive's upcoming 256-man shooter, MAG: Massive Action Game (the only official screenshot we've seen thus far is posted above), so we thought we'd bring your attention to some screenshots that would normally fall below our threshold of dubiousness. Flickr user 1337guyzorz recently posted 28 supposed images involving the title, including a number of in-game screencaps and a few character models.
The images are fairly attractive, though they may leave the viewer with a number of unanswered questions. Namely, where did they come from? Are they leaked from a Sony FTP server? An exclusive from some gaming journalism outlet? Summoned by some sort of ominous pact with a screenshot demon? More importantly, are they even real? They certainly seem massive, and the pictures contain elements of action, and, well, it looks like a game. The shoe seems to fit -- but where did the shoe come from? We may never know.
[Thanks to everyone who sent this in!]

This reminds me of when TF2 was first coming out in 1999-2000... Everyone was freaking out at the screen shot. It kinda looked like that same picture. The general feel I mean.
btw... game looks cool to me.

Is it possible for sony to cancel this game to work on something less boring looking? 256 foul mouthed loud douchebags in a single game just sounds so un-appealing.

That's just it, there's nothing really special about this game. It just sounds like your typical everyday boring online shooter.

You do know this is a PS3 exclusive, and not a 360 game right?

Good point. Being a PS3 exclusive, almost no one will be talking during matches, just like with Warhawk.
I'm looking forward to this game though. Flashpoint (or whatever) may have done hundreds of players online at once on the PC, but this would be a first for a console. I hope it can live up to Socom.

Speaking of Operation Flashpoint, why has there bean nearly no coverage of the game in the past year? It releases May 26th and is the most satisfying looking tactical shooter experience in a long time, plus it has 4 player co-op and all of it takes place in a massive (Fake-Russian) island persistent open-world, plus the environments are destructible if I remember correctly and explosions/ash/smoke will linger on long after you've moved on to another area, etc etc. There have been maybe 3 so far and they haven't revealed much about the game.
Perhaps it's because it's being developed by a different studio and Joystiq isn't much of a fan for Codemasters.

Or maybe because OFP2, like OFP1 and ArmA, will be a realistic game where you can die from a single bullet and cannot magically regenerate health. These types of games tend to be much slower-paced and are not as popular as your run-'n'-gun shooters like Call of Duty 4.

Ah but were Joystiq to actually report on this game you'd know that the game indeed does conform to the standards of today while being more tactical. While leaving a special realistic mode you can turn on for hardcore fans of the series.
This is exactly what I'm talking about.

@anticrawl - There was a lot of love going around for the studio that created the original flashpoint. It never really became as popular as I thought it should have been, but still, people don't like it when another studio picks up a series that had been going to waste. Personally, I don't care who develops the next flashpoint, as long as it's good. The lack of coverage does make me worry though...I didn't even know the release was that soon.
Speaking of worry, I didn't know so many people were that defensive about the lack of people with mics on PSN. Is that really even something to get defensive about? XBL fans complain on and on about all the annoying wankers that have mics on XBL, and yet it is a bad thing that only the most dedicated players on PSN have a mic? I feel for all of the professional reviewers/editorial writers out there.
Killzone 2....a 5....out of 5.... *RABBLE RABBLE RABBLE!!!*

I'm pretty sure people thought you were implying the voice chat support and online user base isn't as great as it is on the 360. While that may be true they may have for whatever reason taken it as offensive. Fanboys are a sensitive bunch.
In any case you don't have to worry much about the lack of coverage. From what I've read and seen (check the website and gametrailers) the game looks superb.

I'm no fanboy either, nor am I the sensitive type.
My gaming time goes PC>GBA>360>PS3>DS>Dreamcast>Wii>PSP
I like to enjoy all the systems, but I'm vocal about my opinions regardless of whether or not they'll upset folks like you. I have a reasonable balance of cynicism and positive comments about them. There is no sense praising any company.

I have to agree with the surly kid on this one.
It doesn't look enticing in the slightest, and the fact that this generation Sony are hedging all the bets on boorish FPS fare such as this and KIllzone makes there fall from grace somewhat justifiable.
Serving the backward serfs rather than the real audience that built up the PS1/PS2 (the Parappa the Rapper fans/Sly Cooper..the list is endless)has been the biggest failure of this flabby corporation. And, throughout all this, they continue to ignore what could have been the greatest handheld console of all time. And for what: terror simulators!? Way to pander to ugly men with the myopic viewpoints Sony.

I'm not calling for a return of franchises like Parappa the Rappa or Sly Cooper, especially when the former is being reincarnated in the form of Major Minor's Majestic March, it's a return of that 'fun-for-funs sake' tone, something that those games excelled at, that I'd like to see return. This has been sorely missing on Sony platforms, and it's disheartening when a Sony Studio is actively encouraged to reject such optimistic ideals. Less cynicism and outright hostility, less pandering to the unhappy hikikomori or emo teenager (Tmac) who see the world in shades of brown, grey and despair; more earnest fun.

So the fact that Sony is focusing on new ideals bothers you? If you preferred that sort of gaming, why not just stick to Wii, Wii is pilled with the sort of pick up and play games that I used to play on PS1 and N64. Everyone is entitled to thier opinion, so I'm not here to tell you your opinion is false and mine is right, but by cancelling this game to work of games like Parrapa the rapper, how is this benefitting me and others that are keen on the new ideals?
I too believe that games nowadays are stuck in the shades of greys and browns, but do not forget that this is the initial stage of new game development, as developers get to grips with technology, so too do the capabilities and graphics develop until we are faced with gaming such as Crysis for an example with beautiful scenery and plots like Bioshock with a combination of a vast array of gameplay capabilities and innovation, the next step would then be to conjoin the them to provide gamers with a fuller gaming experience. If you want to blame anyone for gameplay innovation, blame the developers, they create the games, Sony like Microsoft just sees it through.
Zipper is known for stealth and shooter games, they are hardly going to start work on the next Parrapa are they? As for Sucker Punch and Sly Cooper, so they decided to add a new IP to thier collection instead of just basing everything on the Sly Cooper, how is that a bad thing? Surely they will return to Sly Cooper, but adding more IPs to your library of developed games couldn't be a bad thing, instead it could only be better, focusing on one IP is both monotonous for the developers and also leaves the target market with the inclination to believe that that one game is all they are capable of developing.
And when gamers start looking elsewhere for new gaming experiences, what then?

I also noticed you are targeting your arguement at Sony
"This has been sorely missing on Sony platforms, and it's disheartening when a Sony Studio is actively encouraged to reject such optimistic ideals"
Are you using Sony as your argument in this particular thread because MAG is a PS3 game or are you just saying that Sony is the only one lacking the 'fun for fun's sake' sort of games because if your arguement is the latter, it would lead me to question you considering the fact both PS3 and 360 sit in the same situation, though I could agree that Wii is excluded from the two in this argument as Wii games are different to 360 and PS3 games, but whether you would call Wii games fun or not is all down to what your perception of 'fun' is and people all find 'fun' in different things.

You don't honestly think you'll have to listen to 256 players all at the same time do you? You only need to hear the commands of your direct team mates, chances are, in a match with over 200 people trying to eliminate you or at least 100 if its split across the border, you WILL WANT to hear what your team mates are saying, but as it's not just a 'every man for himself deathmatch', like Killzone 2, you have no reason to hear all 256 people, thats just stupid, in fact, you wouldn't be able to hear anyone because everyone would be shouting over each other, that would make no sense at all.

One of them has a man standing on virtually thin air and it looks completely unconvincing.

Well, yeah, an early build. The game isn't due until the begining of 2010, I believe.
Still, I think they look okay, especially given how large the battlefield is.
As for the animations (like the 'floating' man): it'll most likely suffer from the same problem as all online games, with certain actions looking weird. Don't think there's really any way around that.

really? It actually looks pretty decent. Sure there's barrels popping through walls and people standing on air, but some of those character models seem sweet and the overall graphic level is pretty good.
It definitely needs some polish, but for a game thats coming out a year from now it looks great!
