I don't know how I feel about this. I really like the prospect of exploring the Forerunner, but at the same time I really really want to know what happened to Fred, Kelly, Linda and of course John. I suppose they'll probably be dealt with in whatever game comes after ODST, but that just seems farther and farther off the closer we get to ODST, especially considering how long that Peter Jackson thing's been going on and if that will EVER be released

This is awesome news, maybe leading to another gaming trilogy as well?

I'd rather the Forerunners be explored in a game, but I guess this is okay.

Why didn't they aproach Iain M Banks to write the prequals?
Bungie 'leveraged' most of the Halo story from his Culture series in the first place anyway, it's make the most natural fit.

Can't say I'm much of a Halo fan (nothing against it, simply never got into it), but I am a Greg Bear fan. Eon was awesomeand the Darwin's Radio series very very interesting. I'll probably pick up the books just to read his work.

Also, may I recommend Peter Hamilton and Alastair Reynolds to those looking for sprawling epic space operas.

This is very good news, indeed. Nice to see Microsoft continuing to build on the integrity of the Halo franchise, and not watering it down like so many other companies do with their key franchises.

Greg Bear is awesome, I have been reading his work since Blood Music, over 20 years ago. The man is a hard sci-fi icon for very good reason, and he should bring quite a bit to the Halo series as a result - even if it does turn out to be a much heavier read than most Halo fans are used to.

Kudos to Microsoft for bringing a sci-fi legend into the foal, and with luck, this will not be the last time we see a sci-fi author with this much writing credentials lend their pen to a Microsoft owned franchise. For example, I'd love to see what Larry Niven and Jerry Pournelle, the masters of disaster sci-fi, would do in the Gears of War universe. We'd likely wind up with an ensemble story about ordinary people from all across planet Sera, during the events leading up to and the direct aftermath of Emergence Day, and how these events changed the lives of these ordinary people.

You know, that would be bad ass.

Call me crazy, but I don't think this is a good idea. Does the story of the Forerunners really need to be fully told? I thought the terminals from Halo 3 were the perfect way to tell that story, but if they get 3 full books, it could (would) provide too much information, and take away from the incredible mystery of these legendary people that mysteriously vanished from the galaxy hundreds of thousands of years ago. Not everything needs to be fully explained. Some things are best left to the imagination.

@ GANNONSMASH, you have a point. I never considered that. This trilogy sounds pretty awesome, but then again, maybe the mysteries should be left alone. However, I think I'm not alone in saying that altho a huge Halo fan (I've played every game and read every book) I found the terminals to be a difficult way to understand the story. I'm only of their stories because I've read them online. Most people, no matter how hardcore, don't take the time to look at them, and figure them out during the game.

Anyway, I agree with the others, a Forerunner game would be perfect. You know for a fact that Spark would be in it.

I want a Forerunner GAME so bad.... People with the better, original versions of all that covenant tech... Heck, lets but an energy blade on each arm of that class 12 combat skin and...... and...

....My luck is that by the time they get to making a Forerunner game or series, WE will have that technology... And I'll be pushing up daisies lol
