I had 980 for ages after I traded it in, then borrowed it from a friend and got the Conversationalist achievement.
I wasted so many hours of my life for 20 points. I also played through Gears as Dom for 30 points... On my own... With two controllers... In the dark pre-XBL days.

I love when I unlock an achievement, that little noise makes my ears rise and my eyes widen. But when I compare to a friend to see if they have what I have I soon find out they already have 900/1000 and it makes me feel like a discouraged piece of crap...

At least I don't have any friends on my PS3 to compare trophies to............ BECAUSE NOBODY USES A FUCKING MIC!!!

whew...sorry...

go to players met under friends in the xmb and you can compare trophies with the people that don't want to talk to you.

Not to argue in either case, to me its pretty cool how much achievements have actually kicked off. Different game developers of different platforms are also participating in the achievements thing.

I will go on record here and say that I will buy the first game that has 49 0 point achievements for random stuff, with a 50th for 1000pts that can only be attained by hacking the game (like doing 1 quntillion dmg with a weapon that does 10dmg a hit and breaks). Thereby causing achievement whores the world over to void their bowels.

Only "nearly 150 Achievements for every Live subscriber"!?.. that's not many at all.. I have over 2,000, possibly 2,500 by now.

i think you are thinking of 150 gamerscore. they are referring to achievements, like each item unlocked. for instance i have 869 achievements and a gamerscore of 26,900. so, the 150 is in comparison to my 869. ya dig?

to be clear..

my Gamerscore is 51,965

I have between 2,000 & 2,500 achievements.. if true achievements was working, I could be exact.. not bad since November 06 (the one that Gears of War 1 came out) - lost 4 weeks to disc drive failiure & 1 week to red/green messing up, intermitent with no picture at all..

If watching a computer add two pointless numbers together is more fun than playing a game, why doesn't everyone just buy calculators instead of game consoles?

I only have a 40k score on the 360, but I think that the ps3 trophies are the next generation, or better implementation of the whole concept.

People who have never earned every achievement in a game have higher scores than me, as the higher 360 scores usually mean they have played more games. Sony actually improved on the whole achievement system with their platinum trophy, since it shows you earned all the others in that game. If the 360 had that system, I'd have 14 platinum trophies. It actually shows the higher skilled players.

Getting all the achievements in a game doesn't necessarily make you more skilled. I got all the achievements in Avatar...am I more skilled than someone who didn't rent the game for 30 seconds to get an easy 1000?

And even getting 10,000 kills or logging 500 hours or whatever doesn't really mean you're better.

It does, however, mean you have a lot of time to waste.

i see the achievement/trophy thing as an expansion of your initials in the old arcade days. in gta3 through san andreas my brother and i would compare stats and show off stopies, wheelies, and car rolls. they can add fun to a game but they can also be ridiculous. have you seen the riddick trophies

I liked trying to get Achievements in Dead Rising, but that's as close as I ever got to enjoying them. Otherwise they're just think this that occasionally pops up and randomly makes me feel like I accomplished something that was apparently important.

So far I think Infinity Ward understands achievements. Nothing to force players into playing online against people we don;t know or like or to prolong game that has already been beaten. Programmers and publishers should take note.

Not sure I would have attempted COD4's "Mile High Club" had it not been for that satisfying pop-up and sound effect we all know so well...finally got it after about 100 times. Man, that was rough...
