Both OPM UK and Edge magazine feature hands-on previews of Final Fantasy XIII in their respective May issues (out now). While 1UP may have already exposed most of what we need to know about the battle system, there are a few tidbits that had gone unnoticed. OPM UK details the post-battle screen, which includes information on a 5-point performance rating. The developers refused to elaborate on this, but did say it would affect gameplay.
Edge asked FFXIII director and writer Motomu Toriyama if the number of time segment commands for each character would increase (which would ultimately let characters perform more actions in a single turn). He replied with a hinting wink, "That's a very shrewd observation." Toriyama also talked a bit about the storyline, revealing to OPM UK that FFXIII won't just be about Lightning and will be "told by different viewpoints and characters." In that regard, it looks like gamers can expect to see a storyline similar in scope to FFVI. With a public demo packaged in the Japanese Blu-ray version of Advent Children (out in less than two weeks), gamers will get to experience an hour's worth of FFXIII gameplay and story.

I have never seen so much fail come from one person in such a short amount of time. Please remove all reproductive organs to avoid future generations having to go through this.

Something about a harmless drunk stumbling through the door to sit down and tell his tale of excitement for FFXIII reminds me of me. :D
+1 more for stating once and for all that "firsts" are indeed gey.

Obligatory "is that a guy or girl" comment.
I really wish they would ditch the turn based system altogether. It's so archaic and besides, when you're fighting with someone you don't ask them to wait so you can think about what you're going to do. I just can't go back to these types of games until they ditch the turn based system.

um, because then it would just be a western-rpg developed by a Japanese company. just becuase some of us (yes, me included) enjoy the Mass Effects, the Oblivions, the Fallou...err...Oblivions, the KOTORs etc., doesn't mean we despise good old fashion turn-based jrpg goodness.
besides, from all appearances Squenix has fine-tuned (aka, mmorpg'ed) FFXIII's battle system enough to cater to western audiences.

You can have a jrpg without turn based battles. It's the japanese lack of creativity that's the reason why they haven't even tried. They try this terrible half and half hybrid that turns into a grindfest that makes WoW seem tame.
If jrpgs are ever going to evolve out of this 5+ year rut they're in, they need a complete makeover. WRPGs evolved during this generation, and the result is massive success.

On the other hand you can totally turn into an unstoppable killing machine simply by mashing the A button for a couple hours on --oh let's say-- Star Ocean 4. Just crack open a beer, listen to the Joystiq podcast, and play Oregon Trail on iPhone all at the same time... not that I've ever done that or anything... I'm just saying... you could...
btw, Reimi on Star Ocean 4 totally looks like a chick... and the world is a better place because of it.

Sorry, but I wish they would revert back to the FFX's turn-style system instead. I play this type of games to relax, to think about my strategy, NOT looking for an adrenaline rush -- otherwise, why bother even having so many different elements and affectations? Just mash the heck out of the X button and be done with it.

Excellent! I am of the firm opinion that VI is the best of the series, regardless of the flaming that this belief may bring upon me.

VI,VII and X are my top 3 favs I have a hard time putting the 3 in any order. But VI is the Final Fantasy game i've played through the most. It's just got soo many memorable moments & considering it lacked Voices or evne CG cutscenes thats pretty amazing. No other FF game has come close to having such a Great selection of charactors to use, or such a great selection of summons for that matter either

The Cgi fest has turned the FF series from greatness to overcovered trash, starting with the LULZ story of 7.

Wait, wait...
You say the "CGI fest" is turning the FF series into trash, "starting with the LULZ story of 7."
So...starting with 7's story, CGI has brought the quality of the overall series down for each game afterward..? Am I missing something here? Or are you just bashing on 7 because its the cool thing to do, even though it had absolutely nothing to do with your original statement?

God I love this bullshit concept. "Final Fantasy used to be about FANTASY and no cut-scenes."
First, about the fantasy issue. Final Fantasy, has always had giant robots, mechanical towers, airships, magitek armor, and giant roving castles. All FFVII did in this regard was create, for the first time in the series, a coherent world in regards to technology levels.
Second, about the CGI cut-scenes. RPGs are about WHAT? Oh yes, stories. So whether this is told by a bearded Cid jumping up and down and spinning to show he's working on an airship or a fully rendered Cid piloting the Highwind, IT IS NO DIFFERENT. Both are non interactive and serve the purpose to pushing forward the story. Complaining about CGI and better cutscenes in general is the rough equivelant of saying, "Man fuck thiese developers that want to make use of new technology to make a better game. Games were better when all they had was text."

Bashing on 7 because it's when they obviously started caring more about gimmicky cgi cutscenes more than the story itself, or the in engine gfx. FF7 is basically a parody of everything awful with anime style Jrpgs made real.

A storyline similar in scope to FFVI? Thats a bold claim. A VERY bold claim....Joystiq, you just set the bar that much higher.
Posted: Apr 6th 2009 10:47PM (Unverified) said
Amen. FFVI may be very hard to match, but if it is matched, this may be the best FF yet. (Notice the "may", cause it still has to beat FFTactics, which is the true best FF game imho)

All the early reports totally said the demo would be multiple hours long... seems like a waste of money IMO. Advent Children is just such a painful movie to me that I don't think I could force myself to do it, even if FFXIII ends up being an amazing game (I hope it is, but I'm remaining realistic and suspending my judgment)
Posted: Apr 7th 2009 12:46AM bm111 said
I just hope it has a proper world map, and actual airships (not warp points that have a cutscene of an airship during them). And don't give me any of this "neutering the game is technical advancement" bullshit. Also, I want proper towns like in FF9, with houses that actually feel real and mean something besides just being six of the same shop spaces.

yeah yeah yeah stop complaining about final fantasy what it used to be. now is diffirent and its good change is goold sometimes as for those who play final fantasy since day 1 we seen so much changes in battle system but alright 12 was not bad since i got already used to the system on 11 online been playing 7 years now and still am and a good thing i hear that FF13 battle system will be like FFX
and lighting dosent look anything like squall.
Although today’s news confirms what many have already speculated, it is still very intriguing! Tetsuya Nomura recently sat down with Dengeki Magazine to chat it up about Final Fantasy XIII’s battle system. The game appears to have a lot of strategy, with players having to choose their actions wisely, even within a single turn.
Players can use the characters and chain attacks together, however you can also interrupt that chain at any time during the execution of said chain and add a new attack and/or move to it. More powerful attacks, such as high level Magic - example: Firaga, will cost an entire turn whereas weaker attacks or low level Magic can be used in chains/multiple attacks at a single time.
