'Turbo' trailer looks better than most 'real' video game movies

It probably isn't destined to become the Citizen Kane of video game movies, but the trailer for Turbo has more going for it than most "real" video game movies we've seen -- yes, Legend of Chun Li, we're talking to you. Turbo is actually a 20-minute short film cooked up by some USC graduate students for less than $100,000.

There are some interesting ideas going on in the clips shown from the trailer, and it appears the teen melodrama is actually supposed to evoke similarly themed movies like The Karate Kid. We contacted the creators of Turbo, who informed us a public viewing will occur May 2 at 3PM in USC's Norris Theater. The event will be "first come, first seated" and is free. Three shorts will be shown, Turbo will be the last. Copies of the film may also be on sale there for $10 or less. Check out the trailer after the break.

looks corny as hell, but corny is better than bad. (Doom, Chun-li, Uwe Boll)

Yeah I don't have audio here, but with how young those kids look, I was wondering if the dialogue was as cheesy as this actually looked.

When that dude points with those lil orage gloves on it just reminded me of some Lucas'esque (The Wizard) douche.

Parts of it look pretty cool, though.

The effects and the idea behind the movie are impressive. I am definitely intrigued. The players seemed a bit too corny for me, though.. they reminded me of members of a boy band or something, except more arrogant.

Doesn't count if it's not based off a game.

I'm sure it'll be better than the new Dragonball Z movie, at least.

Granted, that's an incredibly high bar I just set, but I have faith in this little college student movie.

Wow, it's like a douche bag party with VFX.

to me it actually looks pretty boring.
i wouldn't bet on it having "more going on for" than legend of chun-li at all.
nice special fx for a low budget film okay, but it just doesn't justify how cliche the whole idea sounds.

Pretty sweet visuals going on there, I'd say the four that put it together will probably land some nice jobs after this short.

That's all I could think about too. Horrible acting and it seems to be an even worse excuse for a plot, but damn if it didn't have some pretty amazing looking visuals.

Makes me wish I actually had gone to film school instead of taking that CAD job out of high-school. Oh well.

Did he have spiky hair? Was he over emotional and awkward?

Did it involve dragons?

Definitely looks interesting. The visuals are very well done, and while the story/dialogue may be cheesy, that doesn't mean it won't be a fun watch. I'd like to check out the full version at some point.

I saw this last night and thought to myself how bad it looked.
But then again I don't understand the absolutely stupid concept of video games being a main conflict in a movie.

it's just ridiculous. It has nice VFX, but the story screams "don't watch me."

If you gave my production team 90k (as opposed to... pizza), we could make something (read: pay someone to make something) look as cool as that, only with much better writing.

I think comparing it to professional movies will draw unfair criticism. I dont think this looks better than any "real" video game movie, it feels like a student movie or a web production and is far from something a theater would accept. For a student or web movie its impressive and would probably get praised if not for the comparison to real movies, lets not get over our heads, this is far from hollywood quality, even Legend of Chun Li quality.

Yepp..I remember it. I was really into aggressive inline when that movie came out. I had this badass pair of K2's that I wish I could still fit in honestly.

Am I the only one who thinks team overkill sounds like something every high school kid thought of at some point?

Actually, despite the redneckeriffic name, "Skeeter" was a significantly better B-movie than "Mosquito" was. ;)
