SWEET.

Whoever decided to pair Butcher Bay onto Dark Athena is a genius. I've never played BB but I keep hearing all these legendary things about it. And I don't have the original Xbox nor any inclination to go buy one, so this works!

don't get the reviews that dislike Dark Athena compared to Butcher Bay. I enjoyed playing thru Dark Athena way more. I agree about the Scar gun tho. That weapon was kinda lame but you needed it to take out this big enemies near the end and break thru doors.

I played thru both campaigns for the first time with this disk. Didn't play the original on Xbox. Both were good games but they kinda fall apart midway thru. The stealth/melee action is the best part yet both campaigns change from stealth/melee to shooters half way in. Don't get why they did that. You walk into rooms with enemies standing there facing the door waiting for you...nothing you can do to sneak up on them. Shoot out lights and they spot you. Kinda sux...I'd like to do stealth the entire game.

Still a good game. Probably more of a rental tho....I bought it and beat both campaigns in 4 days :/ and MP on the PS3 at least is pretty bad.

I got it on 4/2 and was thoroughly frustrated by how difficult EFBB ended up being. I played it on PC originally and do not remember such steep difficulty.

I gave up for the time being and moved on to Dark Athena which I started on Friday, played for ~8 hours and then another 4 or so on Sunday afternoon until I beat it.

It was great. I had a ton of fun. Those spider drones are a REAL whore, however. And it was a bit annoying that so much emphasis was placed on shooting when your health (and the controls, for that matter) is geared toward sneaking.

I've only played one multiplayer match so far. It was Pitch Black mode and it was pretty fun. I couldn't get in a ranked match to save my life and I hope that was just because the game was released early so not many had it yet.

I think I'll fire it up tonight and play for a bit.

so the original Butcher Bay wasn't so hard? I beat it on medium and found it become unfairly difficult at the end. You would get off elevators and have to run down corridors with mechs waiting for you yet the game took all your weapons away prior to that so you had no way of fighting them. All you could do is run for your life and hope you made it to the next room before the mech kills you. On top of that the mech had pretty much perfect aim so there was no way of avoiding getting shot.

Particularly near the end you go up to elevators and when you get off each elevator there is a mech and enemies sitting there looking at the elevator waiting for you. You have no guns except a tranq gun which can't kill mechs. It was completely unfair and just bad game design....

I don't remember exactly re:EFBB original. I might've just been better at games back then. :-P

All I remember is that I can't get past the first mech guy that shows up in chapter/checkpoint 6. You can only damage him from behind and he turns/shoots way, WAY faster than you can run.

I tried that part for damn near an hour and just gave up. I was playing on Hard up to that point and knocked it down to medium...STILL unable to get past it.

I bought this game on release day and its amazing. Im starting out with the remade Butcher Bay so I can play them both back to back and not miss anything. I really think this game is incredible especially when you do the insanely brutal slowmo kills like sticking a knife in their mouth and cutting through their face, or making a guy blow his own head off with his shotgun, or slitting someons throat, or or or or or breaking peoples necks in a couple ways its soo awesome. And the blood man its awesome if you slice someone it flings blood on the wall in just the right way, and bruises and stab marks appear on the people your beating the hell out of. The stealth freaking pwns too its like splinter cell except you have glass shards and neck breaking. Yeah Dark Athena has more gunplay but you can still ghost some mother fuckers if you want too, it gives your versatility in your playstyle. Do I want to go guns blazing? or do I want to break that assholes neck, and stab him through the collar bones? I dunno its up to you, but Im a big fan of stabbing in the collar bones.

So, do these loading issues occur on the PS3 version? Has anyone compared the two versions for differences? Hit me with a link if anyone knows of I sight that has compared these, please.

The loading issues are still present in ALL versions from the original PC game. The load times will still be poor on PC as well, not just the consoles.

the load times arent even bad...nothing compared to what they used to be...the only annoying part is if you're in a load section..continue on..and realize you forgot something..or need health

its the same if not better than any games load time

plus..if you time it right..you can do a jump and your shadow makes you look like spiderman!!!!

what about xbox hard drive? I install every new game to the hard drive after my first hour or so of playing it.

See, just to stoke the flames on Xbox I'm given a choice of play immediately or load to the hard drive. I usually play immediately, and then when its dinner/chores time I load it to the hard drive.

Completely unrelated and not funny:

@Residentevil72501

Thanks for the feedback. To my understanding, the PS3 handles memory and loading differently. Since they would already have to work around the PS3's unique process, it seemed reasonable to assume that they may have had the time to optimize the loading times.

No load times on the PS3? Did you have to do a partial/full install, or does it just load everything right off the disc?

This review is too complex. Please distill it down into a rating out of 10.

(And remember! 1-6 = crap, 7 = okay, 8 = good, 9-10 = brilliant).

Thank you.

I like the way Joystiq reviews games. It's better than putting a score. I'd be more willing to rent an okay game if it didn't have score than rent a game with a rating of 6.

Yeah the 'stiq has some very good reviews. Although with a weak detail in the writing engine and an even weaker background textures, the wit and charm can still outdo the OBVIOUS laziness on the bloggers' end. I'd have to say that even though Joystiq was not how it was intended to be released for consumer consumption, it is still a moderate success.

Presentation - 7.5
- A weak writing engine coupled with some weak background textures hold back Joystiq from it's potential.

Graphics - 6.5
- While the pictures and video always come out well, there doesn't seem to be any graphs. But the large amount of lolcat pictures help to salvage what little is left for the sit--er, game.

Sound - 0.0
- All I hear is the bitterness and cynicism of the internet.

Gameplay - 5.0
- While scrolling up and down and typing is nothing new, Joystiq is able to put a fresh spin on it by...doing nothing, actually.

Lasting Appeal - 8.0
- Like I said, lolcats are awesome and their work here is irresistible.

Overall - 1.0
- Disappointing to say the least, but there are a few points that make Joystiq slightly more tolerable than flaming diarrhea......but only slightly.

I got yesterday, played EFBB for about an hour. It's still as great as it was back when it was released 5 yrs ago. Played the multiplayer for a little bit earlier. Deathmatch is average but fun. Pitch Black, however, is an awesome multiplayer mode.

I want to finish EFBB first since I was unable to finish the original, then I'll try out the Dark Athena campaign.

But so far, it's very well done.

I had EFBB on my Xbox and remember it being great although i couldn't finish the part where my weapons were stripped and i had to run... from that damn mech.

But i'm interested to see how this plays.

I like it when developers update a classic for an audience that probably missed it. I've been meaning to play "Butcher Bay" for a while now, and knowing it is included with "Dark Athena" makes that title a two for one deal. The multiplayer may be great, but the community will probably wither and die under the weight of the millions playing Call of Duties, Halo 3, and GOW2.

Dark Athena is not a remake of Butcher Bay. It just comes with a Butcher Bay remake extra. I was commenting on the new one when i said it's a "cheap rip-off". I tried both inducing the multiplayer before I made my judgment. My overall judgment is that why I can see that this game must of been awesome 5 years ago. It's not really all that great today, it just feels to dated. I'm sure I would of liked it when it first came out.

As for Dark Athena, not only did they not add anything new worth noting since Butcher Bay, they used the same exact cookie cutter animations from 5 years ago. The gun play feels just as stiff and the A.I. is either ridiculously dumb, glitchy, or unbelievably hard (this goes for both games). The one thing i love about the game (but obviously was not great enough to keep me from taking it back to gamecrazy) was the pretty decent graphics and stealth play.

Just accept my opinion as well....a freaking opinion.

(this will get voted down)
Go ahead. Now you either prove me right or pleasantly surprise me.

Why dont you give scores in each review? Sometimes scores are the only thing that matters to me, unless its a game ive been looking forward to or interests me.

Because in the end scores aren't that important. What you should be looking for are the reasons what a reviewer thinks of a game, not simply the score. Besides most reviewers should get rid of scores any way since they are the #1 cause of nerd rages and fanboy wars.
