MI6: PS3-to-Facebook integration 'coming quicker than some may think' [update]

The MI6 Games Marketing Summit is going on right now and our man on the scene, Randy Nelson, just dropped an interesting tidbit in our laps. During a panel titled "Casual to the Core: Redefining the Gaming Dynamic," SCEA's John Koller talked about social media and how it can affect the games space. When asked by panel moderator John Davison if there would ever be a point when someone could be playing PS3 and have it "spit out something to Facebook," Koller stated that plans are already afoot. He said that such functionality is "critical not just for marketing but for the types of games we're trying to develop. That day is coming quicker than some may think."
One must try to remain skeptical of this, however. Koller didn't say any specific Facebook implementation would be coming, and could have just been referring to social media interaction as a whole. Still, we must admit it's a great idea, if only for something small like real-time Trophy updates for your Facebook friends.

Robert plans to attend 'Come to a Jihad'? I never knew the Joystiq staff were a bunch of terrorists. Too bad I love them so.
Dirty @ Apr 8th 2009 5:25PM
you left out "for love". Amazing what leaving a small part out can do.
"I knew Joystiq were terrorist, I love them"
Hyams @ Apr 8th 2009 5:48PM
Is Barack Obama Muslim?
(I actually found a lot of the Joystiq guys on Facebook, cos I know a guy who knows one of the PS3 Fanboy writers.
A friend of a friend! I'm almost famous!)

Aren't all Jihads carried out in the name of love... for Allah?

It's a jihad against the infidels at Kotaku. q:

I love Facebook if only for the fact that you can play Puzzle Bobble on it. I wuv puzzle bobble
Hyams @ Apr 8th 2009 5:42PM
This concept of 'wuv' confuses and infuriates me!
Chow @ Apr 8th 2009 5:24PM
Would be great if the PS3 browser could display Facebook properly first! :P
j.howlett @ Apr 8th 2009 5:51PM
i was thinking the same thing, then i remembered i don't use facebook
Dehshizknight @ Apr 8th 2009 6:33PM
Yeah, I had to use the m.facebook.com mobile enhanced site to show my parents some pictures.
Draco @ Apr 8th 2009 7:02PM
i havent had a problem dsplaying facebook back in March 07 on the PS3 has something changed?
kbeehaze @ Apr 8th 2009 5:29PM
Mark my words this the year of ps3
Viridium @ Apr 8th 2009 6:45PM
Uh... not at this rate. I kind of wanted a PS3, then I found they were adding crap like "Party Chat" and "Facebook". If they would stop detracting from it, I may think about buying it again.
After a price drop.
Sly (PSN slycooper_rocker) @ Apr 8th 2009 6:55PM
you know, you don't have to use it. it's not like they force you to party chat.
Mein Bratwurst @ Apr 8th 2009 7:25PM
I'm with Viridium. An OPTIONAL feature on my console?! I'll have none of that!
/sarcasm

Well there are Gamertag apps for the 360 on Facebook....
Only a matter of time before a app for the PS3 Trophy API when its ready....
I'd much rather be able to upload video to my facebook tho. its already done to Youbtube why not incorporate it for facebook as well??
chrisnick @ Apr 8th 2009 5:34PM
yeah sony keeps trying to make the ps3 do everything.......well sony...i bet it can't cure cancer!!!
wallywallas @ Apr 8th 2009 5:48PM
Well, at least it's trying: it's called Life with Playstation. :P
Araskaz @ Apr 8th 2009 7:37PM
Actually, it can cure cancer.
Folding@home (:
Maverick Saturn @ Apr 8th 2009 9:30PM
It can cure cancer? Well colour me suprised :O Thats it, more PS3 for me then!
Wait, do the doctors know about this, cos people are still dying....
wallywallas @ Apr 8th 2009 5:32PM
Maybe even twitter support would be cool: Every time you achieve something for a game, it would automatically appear on twitter.
"Playstation 3:
just passed the 4th chapter of Killzone 2.
Just got a new throphy.
Just finished Uncharted.
Etc. etc."
I wonder if they mean something like that.
Chris D.(PSN: Aggie_CEO | XBL:The Aggie CEO | Steam: Aggie_CEO @ Apr 8th 2009 5:42PM
as much as I'd hate to say it I wouldnt be surprised if that was in the works. Hell I'd much sooner expect to see it on the PSP2 if it has custom App support...
Courtney @ Apr 8th 2009 5:43PM
I wouldn't use it, but that's actually a good idea. I'm sure there are people out there that would like it.
Sly (PSN slycooper_rocker) @ Apr 8th 2009 5:49PM
i would like it to make my ps3 owning friends jealous. i wouldn't like it because it would make me look super nerdy to all my other friends. :/
Demolition Elmo @ Apr 8th 2009 6:02PM
There are people who have xbox twitter updates. Those get annoying FAST.....
Levi (God Hand Defense Force) @ Apr 8th 2009 7:09PM
I'd only use it if it would toss out jocular messages every once in a while
"Levi just logged in 200 hours on Disgaea 3! He's still single ladies!"
Chris D.(PSN: Aggie_CEO | XBL:The Aggie CEO | Steam: Aggie_CEO @ Apr 8th 2009 5:34PM

dammit that went in the wrong place
Hyams @ Apr 8th 2009 5:41PM
Wait, MI6? As in, the British secret service?
James Bond got this information?
Chris D.(PSN: Aggie_CEO | XBL:The Aggie CEO | Steam: Aggie_CEO @ Apr 8th 2009 5:43PM
no no no...Bond was on Vacation this week....
Sly (PSN slycooper_rocker) @ Apr 8th 2009 5:53PM
the ps3 is a threat to british national security! call sprinkles to tell him this!
John C @ Apr 8th 2009 10:32PM
Facebook, MySpace, Twitter... places where XBL gamertags can already be displayed and updated dynamically.
Well, it's nice that Sony is trying to catch up in that respect. All they really need to do is make the data available to anyone and support their fan developer community.
SCEA seems to be very progressive in that respect. They rolled out their own version of dynamically updated gamercards... ahead of North America. Curious. Just goes to show how segmented Sony really is. Is this the first step in Sony allowing its different divisions to crawl out of their silos and actually work together? I doubt it. But I can dream can't I?
Night Elve @ Apr 9th 2009 12:14AM
I totally agree with you here. SONY really need to work together, it's pretty stupid tha NA has it own type of GameCards and Europe its own.
Also SONY an API so people can develop applications around Playstation would be nice.
Tigresa @ Apr 8th 2009 5:54PM
Jack Bauer sez I'm sending this Facebook over to CTU.
megapenguinx @ Apr 8th 2009 6:03PM
This sounds good, like if it could change your status to what game you were playing....
mr.kasey @ Apr 8th 2009 6:16PM
How about less fucking Facebook and you work on getting VOICE CHAT.
leo @ Apr 8th 2009 6:16PM
Now this is a good strategy, will move consoles for sure, if Facebook becomes part of playstation network,

I see enough pregnant lady and baby status updates on my Facebook page. The last thing I want to see now is a "Ding so and so just earned a trophy" added to the mix.

You can have this feature PS3 boys. I sure as hell don;t want every aspect of my life dumped onto facebook. What's next a toilet linked to facebook? "Snip4Kill4-420 just plugged up the shitter!"
Maverick Saturn @ Apr 8th 2009 9:32PM
Peter just changed his status to: I PLAYED KILLZONE ALL WEEK, TAKE THAT!
Peter is now single.
