Gad, that was ages ago. Had that mag at my desk for awhile at my last company, buddy and I use to trade it off when we were bored to tears. Must've been like a July / August issue?

OH HOLY BALLS MAN, have you play through the Sons of Samedi mission Assault of Precinct 31? Think I tried it at least 20 gd times last time.

Shouldn't there also be a performance advantage to cell shading?

I believe that's a myth as will be pointed out by someone with more detail shortly.

I remember during the cel-da hay day people saying cel shaded games actually require more processing, but I doubt that's the whole picture.

It depends on how it's done. If it's exclusively cel-shaded, you can get away with certain things, but other things like character silhouettes are more noticeable, and so more time must be spent getting them to look good. You also tend to need higher-res shadows. Since they're projected onto a smoother object, aliased shadow edges are more obvious. Typically, vector-based models tend to render faster, but it also depends on other effects that are applied, like HDR, SSS, ambient occlusion, etc.

If they're going for more of a Crackdown look, there's still a lot of detail and more conventional types of texturing going on, and the cel-shaded style is more of a post-processing effect. In this case, I think it tends to be a bit more demanding.

There's a ridiculous number of factors that go into rendering styles, I feel like it could go either way depending on how they're balancing it.

Actually finished it one of those times finally when I decided to run/drive back to the crib rather than take that damned helicopter. My car was en fuego and about to explode when I finally hit the marker to end the mission :P Must've been playing till 130AM PST last night. I'll hit you up next time I see you on there!

Weird, but not necessarily a deal breaker. Plenty of great cel shaded games. Still, pretty big change!

That's what I was thinking too. While it wouldn't be my choice in design, it still may be worth playing.

This is kinda off topic but, Wind Waker is my favorite Zelda title. It comes the closest to being more than just a video game. Wind Waker is like a moving painting...truly a masterpiece. And it's all thanks to it's wonderful cel-shaded art style.

I still laugh at the people that said cel-shading would make the game "kiddy".

I agree, odd choice...

@Erluti: I'm not stopping you from buying and enjoying this game if it's cel-shaded. I respect your opinion. But personally I am not a big fan of the style. Forgive me, but isn't it just beautiful that not every one has the exact same taste?

To me it's not all about the game, but also about the visual experience. A graphical style influences the mood and the way you experience a game a lot in my opinion.

I like differing tastes too. But it's like going to a movie and saying the seats were unattractive. Or listening to the radio and not like the aesthetics of the dial. Or reading a book and hating the material it's printed on. While those are all things you can not like, it doesn't change the quality of the film, the song, or the book.
The fundamental game-ness of it doesn't change if there's black lines around the character models or not.
I think chess is just as much fun, no matter what shape the pieces are in. A ninja turtle theming of chess might catch my eye, but at the end of the day I could still play it with a barbie theme and enjoy chess.

Doesn't this seem like a bad sign that they would change something like this so far into development?

I liked Gearbox back in the day (Half-Life: Blue Shift FTW!) but Hells Highway being delayed like 10 years and then not being that great, Sambo di Amigo (?) and some of the other stuff they're involved in now seem like they've lost their focus. Also I'm pretty disappointed about the Aliens shooter being DOA so I don't know about these guys anymore.

Just last night I was replaying "Crackdown" one more time before trading it through Goozex. The cell shading looks clean and colorful, giving the game a more timeless style than a dated look. I also feel less guilty executing cel shaded people.

I think the scan posted looks great. Doesn't bother me in the slightest. Far more of a Prince of Persia vibe than a Wind Waker one.

But I guess we'll have to brace for Diablo/Windwaker whiners to start showing up.

Maybe they are switching it to cel shaded so that they can use the engine for Halo 4 and keep both original looking.

(Anyone else remember that rumor awhile back???)

I say good for Gearbox! I'm glad to see they are trying to set themselves apart from all the other Unreal Engine clones out there. Ultra realism doesn't necessarily make a good game. Looks like the game will have some more vibrancy and color to it as well based on that image someone posted above.

There's something about cel-shading that makes me think I'm playing a game instead of an interactive movie like many of the current out there. It's almost nostalgic.

Once a kid tried to tell me Tekken 3 had better graphics than Capcom vs Street Fighter 2 *BECAUSE* one was 3D and the other was 2D.

Either way, doesn't effect how good those games were.

"But it's like going to a movie and saying the seats were unattractive."

This (and others) are bad analogies. It's more like going to a movie and the screen sucks. Granted gameplay is important, but I think it's safe to say the visual component deserves more credit than you have given it. If this was not true, why not just play Atari. I realize that is a bit of hyperbole, but you take my point.

It's perfectly reasonable for someone to not buy a game because they don't like the art style. It's also perfectly reasonable for someone not to buy this game because the change in art style. It's a matter of opinion and is therefore, inarguable.

My most anticipated FPS of the year! I hope Gearbox delivers because recently they haven't really put out any quality titles. But this game is so damn ambitious I just hope it works out. I love the scan, the new art style really does make it look different from all the other crap Unreal Engine 3 (seriously one of the worst things to happen to this generation, Mirror's Edge did do some interesting things with it though) games.

It's like if Mad Max was turned into a 3D pseudo-anime project. Just please keep the 4-player coop in the game!

Bah I wish this place allowed edited posts.

The old artstyle for this game was the only weakness it had for me. I love the post apocalyptic setting, but the game just looked so bland and generic. I'm liking this look alot more.

I'm really getting sick of the whole "Real is brown." crap. Gears of war, fallout, resistance, metal gear... Look, no matter how crapsack your world is that doesn't mean all the hues in the world start mystically drifting towards grey. This color pallette (Or lack thereof) really mar these otherwise great games.

Probably the most egregarious example i've ever seen happens in the first killzone: One of the shootouts occurs in what appears to be a cherry blossom field. AND IT'S STILL FUCKING GREY.

CHERRY BLOSSOMS ARE NOT FUCKING GREY.

So yeah, good for borderlands. I'm actually looking forward to it now.

Not saying anything for the other games but the other Fallout games had that art style as well. That's all it is- the artstyle that they went for. Calling an artstyle inherently bad just because you don't like it or because it's not realistic is silly.
