Dead Space: Extraction gameplay footage & prod interview

But the real attraction here is footage. The video is interspersed with gameplay footage from Extraction, mostly consisting of the disarming (and dislegging) of creepy spider-dudes. In our estimation, at least, EA is delivering the graphics it needs to ensure that the game is appropriately atmospheric. And by "atmospheric" we mean "eeeeeeeee."

"Guided first-person experience?" Hold on, let me fire up my bollocks filter. Hummm, ah, you mean "rail shooter!"
Vegnagun bwf @ Apr 9th 2009 3:31PM
They must think "rail-shooter" is a dirty word, because he really was doing all he could to not use it.
Erluti @ Apr 9th 2009 3:38PM
There's nothing wrong with Rail-Shooter. There is something wrong when you don't have a light gun! Aim where I point, you stupid wii!
Fernando Rocker @ Apr 9th 2009 3:15PM
Looking good... fire effects look nice... Dead Space is one of my favorite games on the 360, and playing a prequel on the Wii is good. At least EA is doing an original game and not a downgraded port.
Vegnagun bwf @ Apr 9th 2009 3:30PM
I don't know. I would usually agree with you, but the rail shooter is getting to be a crowded genre on the Wii, also I'd love to play a downgraded Wii port of Dead Space with the IR controls (just like RE4Wiimake).
That being said it looks a step above your average rail shooter, and it seems to be coming along nicely. Here's to hoping that Extraction can muster up as much fun as the original.
Markez @ Apr 9th 2009 3:39PM
Rail-shooter getting to be a crowded genre on the Wii? What? Feel like I can count the # of big rail-shooter games on the Wii using only one of my two fingered hands.
Moptimus Slime (Gobot in disguise) @ Apr 9th 2009 3:46PM
yes, 5 games is very crowded. Thats like, half of what you'd find at an arcade back in the day
Duke @ Apr 9th 2009 3:57PM
Fernando, I agree it looks pretty good. People need to accept that the Wii doesn't have the graphics power of the other consoles and so that isn't the way to measure the games. It can't be a Wii vs PS360 issue all the time. For a Wii title I think it looks pretty darn good and looks like it might be a fun play.
Dirty @ Apr 9th 2009 4:24PM
I would play it, if I still had a wii. Stupid nintendo, making me re-want your system. Release an HD version of the console and Im back in. It doesn't have to be amazing graphics, I just want what that 720p emulator did.
sam @ Apr 9th 2009 6:48PM
@Markez: Sure, but you can count the number of high-quality M-rated games that *aren't* rail shooters on one finger. (And maybe then put that finger to good use at Nintendo for not publishing Fatal Frame outside Japan...)
Okay, I'm exaggerating. But rail shooters are still out of proportion.
I don't have a problem with rail shooters (and will probably buy this one if it lives up to the promise and has a long play time; same for the new Umbrella Chronicles) but I do have a problem that we barely get any other games - and particularly that two similar series that both 'ought' to be full-control survival horror titles have both devolved into rail shooters on Wii.
Kaoz @ Apr 9th 2009 3:17PM
pass, the ONLY rail shooter I would consider is hotd overkill, and I wont bite on that for more than 20 bucks.
Vegnagun bwf @ Apr 9th 2009 3:32PM
Clever girl.
Kaoz @ Apr 9th 2009 6:46PM
Oh no, personal insults. How will I live down this humiliation!?
Vegnagun bwf @ Apr 9th 2009 9:25PM
That wasn't an insult. I liked your hotd "bite" pun.
Kaoz @ Apr 9th 2009 9:33PM
oh, well im a tard then =P
WiNG [XBL&Steam: WiNGSPANTT] from lifeinagame.com @ Apr 9th 2009 3:18PM
see, in my book "atmospheric" usually means "peeeee"
knighty (GT: ZeraKnight) @ Apr 9th 2009 3:18PM
Lack of shadows and stuff makes a big difference. Anyway, I think this could be a half decent alternative to the "real" version.
Fernando Rocker @ Apr 9th 2009 3:20PM
But this is not the same as the original Dead Space. It a prequel, with an unique story.
damien @ Apr 9th 2009 3:33PM
Yeah but not being able to move around freely sounds kind of stupid.
Shoyz @ Apr 9th 2009 3:30PM
"We wanted to bring a -brand new- experience to people on the Wii"
Hahaha. Oh wow.
Mister Bogus (Mr. ESC) @ Apr 9th 2009 3:33PM
I have mixed feelings about this.
First I think a normal Dead Space game would've been better on the Wii but then again taking advantage of the Wii by making a rail shooter is not bad also I happen to like rail shooters and is a new part of the story.
Just make the Flamethrower useful.
Moptimus Slime (Gobot in disguise) @ Apr 9th 2009 3:43PM
seeing all the effort they but into the fire effects, I'd say they have
Mister Bogus (Mr. ESC) @ Apr 9th 2009 3:58PM
In fire effect in Dead Space had a lot of detail but all fire based attacks did little damage.
The Flamethrower chewed ammo very fast, and the flamethrower ammo was very expensive, for the little damage it did.Even with all the nods, and I remind you the flamthrower needs a lot of them, takes a while to kill the objective to the point I found myself shooting the splicers while they were on fire.
The secondary attack was pathetic. In fact the secondary attack of many weapons with the exception of contact beam, force gun, cutter(The cutter being fun but impractical ),and the pistol were useless.
Vegeta (DAT ASS!!!) @ Apr 9th 2009 3:35PM
Looks pretty interesting. I really do want to try this game.
Dopple Boppler @ Apr 9th 2009 3:36PM
Looks surprisingly decent. Can't say I'm super interested, but it doesn't look bad by any means.
I got a chuckle out of him saying "guided first-person experience" multiple times though. I know they don't want to just flatout say "rail shooter", but that has to be some of the most blatant double speak I've ever heard.
iSwarm @ Apr 9th 2009 3:37PM
An on-rails shooter is not a new experience on the Wii. A free moving game on the Wii would be a newer experience these days! LOL.
Vegeta (DAT ASS!!!) @ Apr 9th 2009 3:40PM
"A free moving game on the Wii would be a newer experience these days! LOL."
Except not really. Trust me I understand what you were trying to do there, but no. Just no.
John @ Apr 9th 2009 3:51PM
At least we are the kings of on rail shooters(Does ps3/360 even have any).
pogoofgo @ Apr 9th 2009 4:05PM
time crisis 4... with its weird sort-of-wii guncons
Rentaro @ Apr 9th 2009 4:30PM
"Our weapons have a secondary fire, which many games don't have"
Huh?
zzyzx @ Apr 9th 2009 5:54PM
It means you can fire 2 diff ways with each weapon. The fire weapon can be used normally as a flamethrower.
The alternate mode shoots fireballs. Apparently, to engage it, you hold the wiimote sideways, gangsta-style (seriously).
Sam @ Apr 9th 2009 4:36PM
These guys sure are in love with their story.
"We get to deliver an all new piece of the story, where OTHER guys run around a shoot stuff. It's not like that guy in the PS3/360 game running around and shooting stuff . . it's a WHOLE OTHER GUY!
. . . I mean, it looks like that first guy because he wears the same suit, but as you play you know in your mind that it's a COMPLETELY different guy."
Sisyphus @ Apr 9th 2009 4:44PM
Hmm... this looks a lot better than I had expected. I still plan on getting Dead Space on my PC in the distant future, but I'm always picking up more Wii games as well.
hubud @ Apr 9th 2009 4:48PM
It's a RAIL SHOOTER, for fuck's sake. Calling this game a "guided first person experience" is like calling a janitor a "Facility Manager" or a cleaning lady a "Environment Improvement Technician". Christ.
Decent looking rail shooter, but still a rail shooter.
Sisyphus @ Apr 9th 2009 4:52PM
Perhaps you can look around with the analog stick and shoot with the Wiimote. And if not, why don't they do that with a rail shooter? Maybe a 120-180 range of looking around, but still a rail shooter.
sam @ Apr 9th 2009 6:55PM
They do do that with 'a rail shooter' - that's how Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles works (although it probably doesn't give you the full 180 degrees you're talking about - it's more of a 'look to one side slightly'). Being able to look around gives you a slightly better chance to get pickups, or finish off bad guys that are on the ground or whatever.
While it was a nice feature I don't think it added that much really. You still aren't in control.
Sisyphus @ Apr 10th 2009 7:34PM
I guess it would just kind of give you the illusion of control, but that's true for nearly all video games and their linear nature. Most people just don't it to be obvious that they're along a set, guided path.
Mike @ Apr 9th 2009 5:02PM
Hmmm, color me impressed. I think I'll have to at least rent this one.
tmacairjordan87 @ Apr 9th 2009 5:17PM
I'll pass on this. This sudden rail shooter revival from the 90s has me scratching my head as much as the 3D movie revival lately. Lets focus on better quality actual games instead.
intro94 @ Apr 9th 2009 8:24PM
this "revival"wasnt possible before, because of the ps2, xbox and gc limitations. We waited for a console capable of the arcade experience
Extinction @ Apr 10th 2009 5:22PM
Um, ps2/xbox had tons of on-rail shooters. Never heard of guncon? XBOX even had silent scope. Limitations my ass
8-bit.artist @ Apr 9th 2009 5:43PM
dead space made with re4 controls is an instant buy. a rails shooter is a buy when it drops to $20.
Mr Khan @ Apr 9th 2009 7:01PM
Should be better for atmosphere, since they can now perfectly control the rate at which you experience things
Though freedom is preferable, it'll be interesting to see how this game really works. Another on the watch-list for E3, i suppose.
snarfoogle @ Apr 10th 2009 12:34AM
It will be atmospheric, and by atmospheric I mean they will use the on-rails gameplay to make necromorphs constantly appear behind you at startling times.
Brian @ Apr 10th 2009 1:26AM
So with "Insert coin to begin" style instant-join co-op mode, does this mean I can play the game as two characters by going at the screen Wiimotes-akimbo?
Also, I hope it has a left-handed mode if it requires Wiimote rotation for alternate fire mode, otherwise they're going to have some annoyed players.
Addendum to my Also, Dead Space monsters look really strange without any shadows.
Jon @ Apr 10th 2009 2:43PM
I think it looks really good. The advantage of doing it as on "rails" that I can see it the enemies look a lot faster, which could make it just as, if not more exciting/scary. I haven't bought a Wii game in a while, but this I think I will.
