Killzone 2 has speedy run to 500k sold
Maybe it was that snazzy commercial or those poor souls who confused it with Dead Space, but Killzone 2 has set a sales record, becoming the fastest first-party PS3 title to reach 500,000 units sold. Scott Steinberg, VP of Product Marketing at SCEA, added that the game is the highest-selling SCEA PS3 title for the first 30 days out of launch, saying the company was "extremely happy with the results."
Now, let the comment debate over why Killzone 2 should have sold more (or less) commence!

Sounds like pretty good news. I have been slowly getting more interested in the game and I always hope it's in one of the demo kiosks at the local GS I go to. Maybe one day when I get a ps3 I'll be able to try it.
kentuckyfried @ Apr 9th 2009 3:22PM
how could one mix up Dead Space with Killzone 2? LOL.
Vegeta (DAT ASS!!!) @ Apr 9th 2009 3:36PM
What?
Mister Bogus (Mr. ESC) @ Apr 9th 2009 3:39PM
Totally worth it.
If you liked COD4 you will love this, the maps are better and they have some Bad Company and TF2 elements in.
The campaign in these games is usually optional but they have some kickass effects going on and maybe is just me but the effects in campaign and some textures look better than the ones used online.
I'm really good at KZ2 I wanted to join a clan for the kicks.
Kuro @ Apr 9th 2009 4:16PM
At Mister Bogus:
I disagree. I love COD4 and Resistance 2 and I can't stand KZ2 at all. The aiming is just completely off and I hate it. It feels so unresponsive. After trying to play the game on and offline several times I gave up completely, and now I just play Vegas 2.
Mister Bogus (Mr. ESC) @ Apr 9th 2009 4:31PM
Actually I feel the recoil and response of some of the weapons is awfuly realistic same as the aiming. It only needs a minigame in which the weapon jams every now and then but I guess a lot of people would throw the controller in frustration.
The aiming feels right to me I haven't played resistance or Vegas 2.
Kuro @ Apr 9th 2009 4:33PM
People keep telling me it's realistic. I haven't aimed a real gun in real life, but if paintball guns count, I don't really lag when I want to aim, I just turn and aim. There's always a delay when I aim in KZ2. And aiming with the sights is much harder than aiming with hip fire, which also doesn't make sense to me.
Mister Bogus (Mr. ESC) @ Apr 9th 2009 4:43PM
Let me edit that:
What I'm trying to say here is that the aiming and weapon response is somehow realistic here but the controls are so tight and responsive it adds a nice effect to game.
The reason why it beats COD4 MP is that the maps feel right, there is plenty of space to move around but is not like Frontlines:FoW where you have to walk for 5 to 10 minutes to get kill by the local sniper or some COD4 maps in which you can get kill by some kid spamming grenades in a small space.
The maps are big but not so big you miss the action. Even the smaller maps feel good since you have time to react and think, a word that is not frequently used when describing a FPS, you have to think and pay attention to what is going on. In one of the matches I spend 1 minute trying to figure out where the assassination target went when I realized I was it.
Vidikron @ Apr 9th 2009 4:54PM
@Kuro
They patched the movement lag out a couple of weeks ago.
Spartacus @ Apr 9th 2009 5:47PM
Vegeta,
Don't look forward to seeing it at a kiosk. Both KZ2 kiosks I've seen were set up horribly. Sure they had a Sony "full HD" LCD screen hooked up to it, but they must've been using the stock composite cable (seriously Sony, stupid move), because it looked like garbage. With the biggest selling point being the visuals on this game (many sites admitted the game was otherwise pretty mediocre), I couldn't find much to like in my 20-30 minutes of time with it.
Still, I'm on the verge of purchasing a PS3, so I might give KZ2 another chance.
Kuro @ Apr 9th 2009 6:08PM
@ Vidikron: Yea I know it's been patched but I've yet to pick it up again for myself. I'm very hesitant because I was always frustrated when I played it originally.
@ Mister Bogus: From watching my roomate play hours on end, I've seen my share of frag fests in KZ2, and it's sometimes worst since it'll be 5 or 6 people throwing them right near each other.but granted no one chucks grenades across the map in KZ2 like they do in COD4
Windmill @ Apr 9th 2009 6:54PM
I don't know how demo kiosks work in America, but where I live, you can if you want ask the people at gamestop to take out the game in the PS3 and put in Killzone instead for you if you're interested.
hunter2223 @ Apr 9th 2009 2:30PM
It could sell more if the PS3 was Cheaper!
FLAME ON!!!!

copa @ Apr 9th 2009 2:47PM
Please don't hurt my vagina face, but hunter2223 appears to be correct.
The Killzone 2 sales numbers are very good, but they are not affecting the PS3 sales numbers. PS3 has now had five straight months over year-over-year sales declines in North America, while the Wii and the XBox 360 are experiencing sales increases.
That means Killzone 2 is selling deservedly well to existing PS3 owners, but it is not getting new people to buy the PS3. It's going to take a price cut to do that.
Markez @ Apr 9th 2009 2:50PM
@ Burritoclock - Don't sleep on doorknob, calling someone a doorknob is always good.
peekupthekimono @ Apr 9th 2009 3:02PM
Why are gamers so obsessed with sales figures and product analysis? Just buy the fucking system you want, play the games you want, and shut the hell up. I honestly can't believe what I'm seeing. Rather than play games and have fun, the majority of you choose to bicker about "omgz 360z sold waaeey more gaymz than the ps3!!!111one."
samfish @ Apr 9th 2009 3:17PM
"Why are gamers so obsessed with sales figures and product analysis?"
Because it's fun to argue about and gives us something to do at our jobs when we should be working.
kentuckyfried @ Apr 9th 2009 3:23PM
A price differential of $100 is peanuts in the big picture.
hunter2223 @ Apr 9th 2009 3:27PM
I prefer Douche Weasel
first
"Or if people who complained about a price drop saved some cash or made some money"
Son My mommy doesn't buy my electronics for me... I don't know you, and won't make any assumptions about your income levels, so don't be so stupid as to make them about mine.
Second.
At least someone understands basic economics.
Let's see... say that PS3 has an install base of 10mil (Guessing, I know it's higher but I'm making the math easy on myself)
So they sell 500k copies of a game that right at 5% attach...
Now let's make the PS3 cheaper meaning more people would see perceived value in owning it and there's suddenly 20 million PS3's in the wild.
Keeping the same 5% attach that's 1 million copies sold.
So... Dumbass PS3 fanboys who are either still in school or *shudder* recently graduated meaning you know nothing... A cheaper PS3 means more PS3's in the wild means More copies of games sold.
madhat @ Apr 9th 2009 3:58PM
Am I crazy for loving the phrase "punches you in your vagina face"? I am so working that phrase into a conversation today.
Fu22y_Pumper @ Apr 9th 2009 4:32PM
think about it this way, yes what's in the box is more expensive with ps3, but theres more in that box. besides that my brother had 360 for a year n a half, n in that time spent over $1000 for 3 different consoles the shortest lifespan of which was 2 weeks, n the last elite he bought was 6 months old n got 3rod, he traded it the next day to some poor sap who wanted to "upgrade" to a 360 from ps3. so in 18 months he WOULD have ended up spending about 1500 if he'd stayed with 360. yeah sounds cheaper to me!
Overgauss @ Apr 9th 2009 4:56PM
I agree. Much like water is better when it is wet; your statement is relatively immune to counter-argument.
+1
Fu22y_Pumper @ Apr 9th 2009 4:59PM
also, im not a fanboy, seriously i know NO ONE that has 360 that hasnt had multiple consoles because of hardware failures. I even had one once, lasted 2 weeks. when it comes down to it theres good games for both, i mean the games are made by the developers not the cosole manufacturers, with certain technical exceptions, so fighting over a console based on the games is really just stupid, say one is better than the other due to the hardware itself. personally if im going to be spending hundreds of dollars whether its 400 or 500, i want what im buying to last for the long haul, not just two weeks, or 6 months, or even just 2 years for that matter. until 360 id NEVER had a console die on me EVER no matter how long id had it n ive been around since nes, to me that says something. I understand standing behind the games you have available, but how can you stand behind what is probably the lowest quality piece of mass market electronics ever sold? thats like saying a yugo is the best car ever because you put high quality gas in it. i just dont get it.
Spartacus @ Apr 9th 2009 5:55PM
Or you could jump through a few hoops at sonystyle.com for your own "pricebreak".
That's what I did and will be able to buy a brand new 80Gb PS3 with 2 DS3 controllers and free shipping for $199.
andrew @ Apr 9th 2009 2:30PM
guess all those 1 million EU pre orders didnt sell
tmacairjordan87 @ Apr 9th 2009 2:32PM
SCEA is north america only.
rohan @ Apr 9th 2009 2:33PM
did u read the article? it talks about SCEA not SCEE
andrew @ Apr 9th 2009 2:33PM
*breaks egg on face*
JuanDHexen @ Apr 9th 2009 3:06PM
Fastest selling first party game ever for the ps3 period..that's it doesn't matter if it was 1 copy or 500k copies it accomplished something no other first party game did.
Duke @ Apr 9th 2009 2:30PM
I think most would agree that the game deserves to sell well... of course Sprinkles won't agree, but that's too be expected.
Cosmo @ Apr 9th 2009 2:36PM
Hah! Those lying, hypocritical, arrogant, holier-than-thou Sony fanboys do not deserve this game or happiness in general! Aroooooooooooooooooooo! Ruff! Ruff!
Moptimus Slime (Gobot in disguise) @ Apr 9th 2009 2:41PM
OMG ITS SPRINKLES! OMG OMG OMG OMG ! CAN I HAVE YOUR AUTOGRAPH??!?!?!?!? *faints*
Kodros @ Apr 9th 2009 2:41PM
"So really I have nothing more to say about it. "
That's the greatest thing I've ever heard you say.
Duke @ Apr 9th 2009 2:42PM
I love it, yesterday I was a 360 fanboy and today I'm a PS3 fanboy. Hey dumbasses, if you don't read the site each day you probably shouldn't assume people are fanboys.
By the way, if you played the game you would see it's quite good.
PS - Cosmo, thanks for giving me a good chuckle.
Erluti @ Apr 9th 2009 2:50PM
Maybe you are a fanboy of BOTH!!!!
How despicable!
Duke @ Apr 9th 2009 2:52PM
Shame on me for being a dual fanboy! Also, shame for using "too" instead of "to".
Cosmo @ Apr 9th 2009 4:21PM
Sprinkes sure has a fascination with that Vanille chick doesn't he? Such a cute wittle doggie!
Lars @ Apr 9th 2009 6:26PM
I'm soo bored with the FPS genre, but even I agree it's a good game. For any FPS to get approval from me, it's gotta be really really good. For reference, Halo doesn't make the cut. Resistance doesn't either.
After playing a bit of multiplayer, I think KZ2 is more than marginally better than CoD4. CoD4 has a consistently high framerate, but the level design asthetic was horrendous IMO. Plus the perks felt so cheap and annoying. The objective switching in KZ2 is pretty cool too.
I agree the controls do suck a bit though. But much like the 360 controller, once I'm playing I forget about it. Also, game filtering needs a lot of work.
Courtney @ Apr 10th 2009 12:09AM
Okay, I'll finally bite: Who is Sprinkles? I've been around for awhile and thought I knew most of the 'stiq in-jokes, but this is one I've never figured out.
I know Sprinkles refers to some rabid fanboy, but I've never picked up the backstory on why he/she/it is referenced so often.
tmacairjordan87 @ Apr 9th 2009 2:31PM
As usual Sony doesn't know how to advertise their games well. Instead of showing that terrible ad, they should have shown in game footage (and even labeled it that if necessary) and I guarantee it would have sold more than it did. The game in motion looks far better than that stupid bullet ad.
Kodros @ Apr 9th 2009 2:34PM
I think they should have just chopped up the Killzone2 intro and used that. 1 out of every 10 times I play KZ2, I watch the intro just because it's so bad ass. Brian Cox rules.
knowledge4lfe @ Apr 9th 2009 2:41PM
wow you are a moron huh.that is in game footage. stupid ass xbox-please-fix-me fanboys. i know ur junk of a console cant push those visuals because itll go on fire.
Kodros @ Apr 9th 2009 2:42PM
Yikes, being a bit rough there eh?
Moptimus Slime (Gobot in disguise) @ Apr 9th 2009 2:42PM
knowledge4life is a pretty ironic name
Mr Khan @ Apr 9th 2009 2:43PM
Must feel refreshing to be called an Xbox fanboy, huh, tmac?
:P
tmacairjordan87 @ Apr 9th 2009 2:44PM
Lol you see that everyone? He called me an xbox fanboy
Listen, I've obviously played it more than you, because that's not in game footage. That scene does not take place in the game at all. It may be using the in game engine, but it's made like a cutscene. You have to show the common masses what it looks like when you actually play it. They don't need to hide this game behind CG or cutscenes like they do with everything else.
