Charts galore: Halo 3, Halo Wars player comparisons; other RTS titles get in mix
Considering Halo Wars was built from the ground up to establish an RTS audience for consoles, and obviously used the Halo name to get gamers excited, we were curious to know if it accomplished its mission. With a sample size of over 150,000 mostly core gamers, we asked social networking website GamerDNA if it had any data we could work with. Not only did it give us what we asked for, but did a full comparison of Halo Wars to other console RTS titles as well. The data not only gave us a better understanding of Halo Wars' success from being associated with the Master Chief franchise, but also how it compares to other RTS games on the console.
Another slide we found of particular interest (above) compared crossover of Halo 3 to Halo Wars with several other real-time strategy games available on the console included. Halo 3 obviously dominates all in the number of people who played it, but it's interesting to see the relationship the RTS games have -- not only to Halo, but to each other.
Check out all the slides below if you're looking to get really dip deep into the data stream of statisticals.

Halo Wars should be on the Wii. It has to be the most basic, bland, simplistic RTS I've ever played. It's like "My First RTS". I'm a huge 360 fan but Halo Wars sucks.
Tehman @ Apr 10th 2009 3:13PM
I... I thought it was fun....
:(
rudolphe @ Apr 10th 2009 3:24PM
As a game it was fun, but as a RTS it was seriously lacking.
Fakero @ Apr 10th 2009 3:28PM
Well I thought the controls were pretty well thought out for a console RTS. You are right though its very bland if you've are familiar with the genre.
modified @ Apr 10th 2009 4:24PM
The game was never intended to be for hardcore RTS players or compete with PC RTS games.

Well if you think about it, it IS "gamers first RTS." There is probably a large population of Halo players who don't play strategy games and don't intend to try. Halo Wars is a way of getting Halo players to try an RTS.
It IS basic, but this isn't marketed to people who love Command and Conquer it's marketed to people who play Halo.
ShadowXOR @ Apr 10th 2009 5:27PM
I guess you're right, since it was designed for Halo fans they really had to dumb it down.
Xanto @ Apr 10th 2009 6:24PM
I can't tell if you're just being a dick now toward the fanbase
Markez @ Apr 10th 2009 3:14PM
It almost looks like this is an announcement for Halo Pac-Man. NOM NOM NOM
Dirty @ Apr 10th 2009 3:22PM
those sure are some purty charts, and soooo green.
I may be high.... I apologize.

regardless if you liked Halo Wars ( I personally am enjoying it a lot ). The data showing is that a lot of folks are at least giving it a fair shot as a halo game. And there is an RTS fan base on the console that is trying the available options out there.
I would like to personally see more RTS games (made for the console from the ground up like Halo Wars) as well as more Halo titles that make sense in the future.
Sinbad @ Apr 10th 2009 3:31PM
good to see ppl are playing more halo wars than end war, which had higher reviews scores
ShadowXOR @ Apr 10th 2009 3:35PM
And why do they list C&C3 but not RA3? IMO it's a much better game, and the newest entry in the C&C series so many people have moved on.
MaxPower @ Apr 10th 2009 3:52PM
Umm, something is wrong with the rent vs own graphs. For the subject game fewer than 100% of people own or have rented it, C&C 3 for example is at 92%. Do they collect data for people that have borrowed, or stolen it or what?
It's also odd that for each graph 100% of people own Hexic HD and Uno.
Finally alot of the data in the what else have they played seems to be lower than the other graphs (e.g. for BFME2 what else have they played Halo 3 ~82% in the rent vs own ~96%).
These guys don't make charts for a living do they?
Dirty @ Apr 10th 2009 4:28PM
Hexic and uno are arcade games, you either own them or dont. Also hexic was free.
SomeGamerGuy @ Apr 10th 2009 4:42PM
The reason for missing info on the Own vs Rent is that not everybody marks down if they Own or Rent the game. Some people just play the game and never let the site know if they bought it or rented it.
nutman @ Apr 10th 2009 4:53PM
HexicHD comes preloaded onto your hard drive.
Uno is odd, but they give that away a lot with XBL gold packages.
fatty chubs @ Apr 10th 2009 11:17PM
If the graphs don't total 100%, the remaining people could have traded it back or other.
Uno and Hexic are 100% since you can't rent it or trade it, each bar is made up of people who owned versus rent, so its giving you percentage of each pool to give you a comparison of how many chose and option versus another.
I am not sure what you mean by the what else the play graph, but each of those graphs is made up of players of that particular game. So it shows Players who tried Halo Wars (Slide 6) are more like to play Halo 3 then people who played BFME2 (Slide 3).
GammaZero @ Apr 10th 2009 4:21PM
I'm surprised there are ppl who rented COD4....really!!
:-)
nutman @ Apr 10th 2009 4:55PM
I'm really enjoying Halo Wars so its cool to see people playing it. Honestly I'm a pretty big Halo fan and Halo Wars is the best Halo game story-wise. There is only ONE character with cheesy dialogue while Bungie's Halo is constant cheese. Plus, the story is really well structured, the pacing is great, and you don't have a silent protagonist.
Halo Wars is just great.
wait in the car @ Apr 10th 2009 6:04PM
Agreed. Forge was an absolute tool.
aristokrat @ Apr 10th 2009 5:53PM
These graphs just tell me that everyone plays Halo 3.

Forge is down! Forge is back up! Forge is down! Forge is back up! Forge is down! A spartan is down! Forge is back up! A spartan is back up! Forge is down!

The only reason why i didn't like halo wars was because it was too short. why can't developers make games that are actually worth $60? Five more levels would been great.
