Actress Radha Mitchell played Rose Da Silva in the first Silent Hill film, and she told Bloody Disgusting recently that a sequel could happen. Interesting to note, however, is that director Christophe Gans will not direct, as he isn't involved with the project.
"I don't think Christophe is attached," said Mitchell. She further lamented that she felt this was a shame, because he's so passionate about the game series. She also offered that should Silent Hill 2 be put into production, Gans should be the one to helm it.
As for the state of the sequel, Mitchell says it's "being kicked around right now."

Fine with me. I loved the game but the movie was pretty awful, even by extremely low game-to-movie standards.

Agreed the movie certainly could have been better. I've always been a fan of the Silent Hill series, and granted, the games always have the crazy-odd possessed demon-ish character at the end... although I think the movie would have been leagues better if the movie ended right when she enters the basement room with the white piercing light. Everything after that was just crazy for the audience who isn't familiar with Silent Hill endings.
I don't remember who (Ebert maybe) said it, but something along the lines of "it is the best-looking bad film ever made" sounds about right.

Oh dear god please, no. That movie was awwwwwful, even dragged my girlfriend to the theater for it. We're big on scary movies, thrillers, etc., but this was just really lousy. Especially the goretastic crapathon of a finale at the end of a flick.
However I could see a SH2 *if* they actually stayed true to SH2 the game. I think that could actually lend itself to a movie if done right, but definitely not any sort of continuation of that first movie. :x

I actually kinda liked it. Probably because a couple months before I saw Doom, and nearly killed myself over it. Doom and Silent Hill are my two favorite game franchises... and Doom was slaughtered into utter crap.
This was pretty cool by comparison. Can't go wrong with Pyramid Head. He's even cool in some Konami Olympics game in chibi form.

I had a friend who told me for months how this was going to be awesome, in the face of my mounting pessimism. He defended their stupid decisions, like replacing the male character with a female ("Men don't feel that kind of emotion for their children", they said) - then sketching in that horrible Sean Bean character. He kept insisting that given the pedigree of the writer/director it would be the best videogame movie ever made ...
... then he fell asleep halfway through it. Me, I just kept laughing at how horrible it was.

First one was kinda allright. Some bad acting here and there, but overall not that bad. I think the change indirectors is always a scary move, though.

I hope they make a second, the first one was pretty fun, closer to Snakes on a Plane than Saw. It was enjoyable overall and even a bit freaky. Pyramid Head stole every scene he was in. I liked it. Clearly it wasn't good by general movie making standards, but it was high budget B-movie. I didn't watch it to be enthralled by the movie, I watched it to have a good time, and I did.

Yah, this movie wasn't the greatest yet it wasn't that bad and I was pleasantly surprised that a game to movie translation didn't completely go garbage, for once. Some bad acting hear and there and a somewhat not so good ending with that church scene but overall, I kinda stuck to my heart a bit, especially believing that I actually "discovered" the first Silent Hill game when no one else I knew with PS1s even knew what a Silent Hill was. People caught on after I spoke highly of the game, though.I wouldn't recommend that movie to anyone who hadn't played the game(s), though.
I hope if they do a sequel, it would be better but I think the last director was pretty good at conveying what needed to be conveyed to keep it as true as possible to the movie outside of what was already modified in the script.

This movie could have been a LOT worse. Sure, the story was botched and the characters were at times... boring and had the occasional bad line...
But they got two things spot on, getting the eerie and unsettling soundtrack AND nailing the atmosphere of the games.
I recommend checking out this review, I've pretty much come to share the same opinion as this person, albeit less irked about how it turned out:

Am I the only one who wanted Rose and Cybil to get together and run away from Silent Hill with Rose's daughter? I was torn when they killed Cybil because she was so awesome. :(
I thought the movie was pretty good... then again, I like any adaption of source-to-film movies as long as they don't turn out like Children of Men and The Golden Compass.

Well I personally loved it but I understand where you're coming from. The director was Alfonso Cuaron which is the guy who directed Y tu Mama Tambien and Prisoner of Azkaban. I think he's a pretty talented guy but I haven't read the book so I can't question your reasons.
I take back my Uwe Boll comment and will use it on someone who deserves it.

I thought the first movie got the visuals right. Which is the only thing it got right. They were spot on Silent Hill's look and feel....The story however, leaves MUCH to be desired as the last half hour of the movie completely destroys any of the mysticism from the original game's plot. It also gives a very weird and unsatisfactory twist in the end that doesn't make much sense to the audience.
Whoever wrote the script to the first film needs to NEVER write another script again. I was hoping for a translation of the first Silent Hill game's plotline which included the master demon Samael not some convoluted story about some tortured little girl's ghost wanting revenge. While that twist could have worked it was so poorly written into the plot that you're not even sure why the story is taking place at all when it's all over. If they do a sequel I hope they do a fresh story and completely ignore the first movie's plotline. And for god's sake get someone who can actually write a good script. Perhaps Christophe Gans not being involved is a good thing since (if I remember correctly) he was heavily involved in fleshing out the weak plot of the first movie. I do have to give him credit on capturing the essence and the atmosphere of the games. Those special effects and creatures were very well done!
