Amid complaints of price gouging over the new broadband pricing structure its been testing out in select U.S. cities, Time Warner Cable has announced two new tiers for users with varying internet consumption habits. First, for just $15, you can sign yourself up for a 1GB per month contract, which will ... oh, come on. None of you use under 1GB a month. That's ridiculous. It takes more than 1GB to view our front page, due to our extreme high-def JPEGs.
The other tier of interest is the 100GB plan, which runs users $75 dollars a month. Each additional gigglebyte over that will cost $1, though Time Warner plans on placing a $75 cap on overage fees. Basically, for $150, you get unlimited high-speed internet. A hundy-and-a-half? Man, that's pocket change for us media maven types. We make $150 for every sentence in our posts. Which is good. Money, we mean. We like it. It's great. (Ka-ching!)

Besides trying to offset their costs, TW's biz was built on the cable subscription service. I'm not sure what most of you experience, but a number of folks in my circle of friends are dropping their cable service in favor of cherry-picking their cable shows off of services like Hulu or in batch over NetFlix. With that, TW is seeing their high margins starting to slip and likely to collapse as more people look to the web for entertainment. This new pricing structure allows them to make up for these losses. And like others have mentioned, without immediate competition in the area they have one more way to keep the money coming in.
Sure, who needs 100+ channels of crap when I can go online and get the Daily Show the following day on the Comedy Central site...

For the folks saying that Comcast is unlimited, guess again. They have implemented a cap of their own. I got a "nasty-gram" myself from them stating I used too much bandwidth. In fact, they turn your connection off until you call them, and make you say you won't go over the cap again for 12 months or they will cancel your service...period.
Granted, their cap is 250gb...but that is both up and down, and they have yet to give us a tool to measure our useage (other than freeware from other sites)

The industry is an oligopoly that is acts as though it is colluding with each other. They can do what they want. We need to fight this now. Stop Time Warner. Check out this site to find out how we can do this http://stoptwc.info/

As long as there is DSL, or another carrier available TWC can rot in hell. I would rather have a slower connection than let them get away with it. I am not such a net junkie that I cannot put up with a bit of lag. I do remember the slow crawl of dial-up afterall. Thankfully it will never come to that..(shutters).
