There are many accolades one can lay upon Bethesda's post-apocalyptic RPG Fallout 3, but it's impossible to commend the game for its lush, rich environments. Pools of standing, radioactive water? Yuck. Shelled-out buildings inhabited by sallow-skinned mutants? No thanks. Go ahead and say it was intentionally designed that way to create an unsettling, hopeless atmosphere -- we know a sorry excuse when we hear one.
Thankfully, a modder by the name of Khyrin recently released "GreenWorld," a Fallout 3 patch that brings some much needed arboreal splendor to Washington D.C.'s unsightly landscape. You can download the mod here, then watch as Fallout 3's grotesque, sepia toned pallette is exchanged for something a little more viridian.

@MystileArmor: Actually, I also thought that would make it more Oblivion-like as well, except with more guns.
And more mutants.
And more radiation.

I'd call it Oblivion with guns, but I don't want to insult Oblivion

@Tiptup300:
Actually the graphics were noticably better. I don't know how much of that is down to the engine and how much is down to simply better models/textures/animations, but I certainly noticed a difference. That said I have the PC version of both. The PS3/360 versions are probably more similar.

I bet you that guy got hired 10 minutes after he released that. If not, he should, that's amazing.

It's impressive and all, but all he did was have it replace the tree and shrubbery files with green versions. Considering how many times the same dead tree models were reused over and over and over and over, it really didn't take all that much work. I mean, hell, the V2 file is only 3kb.
I use the mod myself, but I don't think its really something that deserves a job at Bethesda.

I wasn't aware he just replaced certain files or how much work was involved...
I never said he deserved a job at Bethesda, but just a job in video games in general.
That said, I do still think it looks impressive.

I love Joystiq, and right now the only site that I visit as much is Fallout 3 Nexus. But I can't help wondering, Why this and why now? Greenworld is at least 3 months old by now. I'm not complaining. I would just love to see good mods mentioned on a regular and more timely basis.

Not to mention vegetation mods have been around since week one of the launch on PC. I love the body and animation mods. You'd figure such a developer could string together some half decent animations but noooo they blame it on the engine. Apparently Mythic uses some sort of magic to make Warhammer Online have natural animations (well better than anything by Bethesda).

why now?
cos Kotaku covered it yesterday-

Though a "mod of the Week" would be nice, maybe in the vein of Weekly Webcomic Wrap-up. Though IT's probably Big Download's job as their the PC orientated guys and Mod's are generally PC based.

no, no it isn't. Not when things like Yuck and No thanks are italicized, especially when Fallout 3 was one of the Goty nominees. (i dont actually remember if it made the list in the end, but I remember how Justin said it was a GoTy when it came out)

Nah, that's not irony.

It's not ironic because there's no discrepancy between the real an implied meanings. It would be ironic if it was created by a "Garden of Eden Destruction Kit" toolset.

Oh, come on people - how is it ironic that a lush tree mod was made by a 'Garden of Eden Creation Kit'? If it was made by a 'Dead Tree Creation Kit', I'd give it to you, but no, it's not ironic.
(This is all assuming I haven't missed some sort of Fallout 3 in-joke. Haven't got round to playing that game yet.)
