We've got exciting news for the three of you that bought Sega's surprisingly wonderful strategy-RPG Valkyria Chronicles -- in the latest issue of Famitsu, Nonaka Ryutaro, the game's producer, said he was pleased with Japan's reception of the war-torn title, and expressed interest in creating another installment in the franchise. However, considering the game was a commercial flop in North America and Europe, but absolutely beloved in Japan, where the title has spawned an anime series and reached Sony's Japanese Greatest Hits status, it's not certain that any prospective Valkyria sequels would find their way beyond Japan's borders.
Still, while this isn't exactly a cold, hard confirmation of Valkyria Chronicles 2, but it should be enough to pique your interest, provided you bought the game, which Vegas odds would dictate you did not.

Wow, great to hear. I personally wonder how they'd do a sequel with how the story ended. Maybe a prequel with the elder Gunther in the first war?

I really need to learn Japanese so that stuff like this that likely won't come to this country is still playable to me. Or they could add in different language subtitles so I could play it in Japanese with English subs (which I would honestly prefer over English dubbing).

In 9 out of 10 cases I would agree with you, but the English dubbing in VC is actually excellent! (And they give you the Japanese voices with English sub option too). However, I actually found myself preferring the English dub in this game and only using the Japanese for fun on the second playthrough.
Anyway, the important thing that I think most of us can agree on is that the only valid reason for not buying this game is if you simply don't like the genre. It is arguably one of the best games in this generation so far - both graphically and gameplay-wise. And I so very much hope we'll get a sequel - outside Japan too (or I'll have to learn Japanese)

#1, bought the game day it came out, loved it.
#2, the thing this game needs is Vs. combat play via interwebz. i mean i would love to go up against someone elses squad in a tactical battle with a variety of maps to play from.
#3, buy the game, torrent the anime, buy it if it gets brough to the US and enjoy.

No trophies, no deal. I refuse to work/play for free.
It might take 1-2 weeks to write down and plan the trophy-list on a paper. And the programing takes max a day. Other game company have confirmed that it only takes one day to actually do the programing.

You refuse to work/play for free? You seriously need some sort of digital reward for playing a video game? If the experience isn't enough for you, maybe you need to reconsider your hobby of choice.
Also, the fact that you threw the word "work" in their to describe a video game is all kinds of messed up.

Yo, Davi.... you know before these current-gen consoles, there were games that DIDN'T have achievements or trophies?!
I know! I know! It's insane right!
Like, as if, all those years of gaming were purely inferior and un-fun for everyone.
Graarr! I get so angry thinking of all those games existing without a digital recognition that I did something cool. I mean, for sure I was the only one who did it, afterall, who else would know about these trophies other than me?

You didn't buy a game you're interested in because it wouldn't add to a pointless number next to your I.D.? Sad and pathetic is right! Seek help, man!

If there's a sequel, i hope it totally removes the quasi-turn based nature of the game and replaces it with a Ghost Recon-esque real-time squad command system.
Posted: Apr 12th 2009 11:05PM blahblah55 said
Aww, but that's what made VC unique.
Having it full-on squad-based combat would just turn it into exactly that: A ghost-recon clone.
As far as I've seen, no one's done the style of VC, and I rather like it.

I'm sure the turn-based modern combat thing's been done already, but from what I've seen, no one's done it with quite the amount of style that VC does. Here's hoping the next one only improves on that formula.

is so sad that this game didn't get better reception here. I love this game, its one of the best strategy rpgs i've played in a while. it kinda takes me back to shining force days.

Such a great game...they should really advertise it here more

So, like, do you play games for enjoyment anymore? Or is your enjoyment determined by little icon-sized pictures that accumulate near your name? Does it matter whether or not a game is fun? What if it had really, really cool trophies? Would that make you buy a sucky game instead of an amazing game, like Valkyria Chronicles?

Is that Battalion Wars?

Wow, spiteful much. Although I'd agree, this game needs more lovin'.
If it makes you feel any better, we showed the anime in our anime club as Fansub of the Week (okay, yeah, I'm pretty nerdy) and mentioned that it was based off a game and several people besides myself had apparently played it.
Hmm, now that I think about it, almost everyone I know who owns a PS3 has a game or has played the game (by borrowing it). But since I don't know many people with PS3's, I guess this doesn't count for much.

it's one of the best games of this generation. LEAPS and bounds above stale concepts that get "game of the year" noms just for their shine and gloss.
But SEGA could have advertised the hell out of it but people wouldn't have bought it here. SEGA games just don't sell anymore -- and people are very brand- and name-centric now.
Please God, let there be SEQUEL.

man what annoys me is how cheap you can get this game in the US.. in Europe (the UK not included) we pay at least 70 Dollar... this blows. After reading some comments here, I guess I have to get this game as well.
Posted: Apr 13th 2009 11:38AM (Unverified) said
I bought it in Denmark for what amounts to $50 and it's been at that price since a few months after it was released. Still expensive, but not $70 expensive. Although you have to look for the cheap places or buy online - PS3 games in most brick-and-mortar stores and chains are ridiculously expensive here - more like $100 than $70.
But this game is totally worth $70 or even more, so yes. You should definitely get it.

It's weird because I would've considered it right up the street of the western audience. Plenty of fans of the anime style, plenty of fans of strategy RPGs, and the graphics are awesome.
It MIGHT be because the PS3 is crazy popular in Japan and lacking in RPGs, so everyoen who had a PS3 bought it. It might be because all the RPG fans in America and Europe already bought a 360 (apart from me).
Who knows, all I knows is I WANT A SEQUEL.
