Joystiq impressions: Silent Hill: Shattered Memories
Although it was probably the most impressive looking game shown at Konami's Gamer's Night 2009 event last week, the "Wii-imagining" of Silent Hill, Silent Hill: Shattered Memories, was sadly not playable. It's a shame, too, considering how natural the game's motion controls appeared in the on-stage demo; seeing them in action made us really want to try them.
We were left to watch the footage of the Climax-developed title and imagine what it will be like, roaming the streets of the snow-covered town, flashlight in hand and camera phone at the ready to catch the unexplainable and unnerving. Fortunately, it was a fairly meaty bit of footage that provided a good idea of what to expect from the game when we finally do get our hands on it.
When faced with an unusual scene, players can take a photo and find frightening (and, we imagine, somehow helpful) sights in the resulting image. |
The amount of in-game text is being kept to a minimum. For example, players will interact with doorknobs, cabinets, objects that can be picked up, and other elements directly with the Wiimote -- there are no prompts asking "Do you want to open the door?" or, "Do you want to pick this up?" etc.
An example of using object interaction to solve a (very) simple puzzle was shown. The player needed to get through a locked door. Nearby, the player spotted some empty soda cans, picking them up and shaking them one at a time. The final can produced a jingling sound from the Wiimote when shaken; turning it over caused the key to the locked door to drop out.
We saw absolutely no combat; instead, the demo focused on what players would be doing after encountering most of the game's monsters: running for their lives. The sequence shown had the player fleeing without even looking back, weaving in-between obstacles and eventually hitting a button to dive into a low opening -- only to be grabbed by the hideous pursuer and enter into a button-mashing tug of war to escape.
The player's cell phone, a new element in this re-imagining, serves a variety of purposes, from managing notes to placing calls and snapping photos. Phone numbers are found on billboards and other signs around Silent Hill, and each one can be called on the cell -- Climax is being coy as to the exact benefits of doing so. It's not holding back on the camera function; players can snap pics of puzzle elements, or, when faced with an unusual scene, take a photo and find frightening (and, we imagine, somehow helpful) sights in the resulting image.
A look at the iced-over "nightmare" world was given, but only briefly. Most of the demo was spent in what passes for the "real world" in Silent Hill, providing plenty of opportunity to appreciate the fantastic light and shadows produced by the flashlight as it passed over objects and even individual snowflakes.
Silent Hill: Shattered Memories is looking good, and goodness knows we definitely want to get our hands on it. E3 is drawing close, so we're adding it to our "absolutely can't miss" list for the show.

Looks excellent.
Quite surprised, with it being a Wii + PSP & PS2 game. Could wind up one of the best-looking Wii games this year, enough to compete with The Conduit and Monster Hunter 3
Fernando Rocker @ Apr 13th 2009 2:16PM
Well... according to the devs, the Wii version is the lead... the PS2 and PSP version are ports handled by diferent devs.
Rockyman @ Apr 13th 2009 8:28PM
monster hunter third, will most probably, swamp the market, I mean look at the PSP version, add in better graphics, more capable hardware overall, a better online service, a bigger screen, boom it will sell so well it will stop the recession, Lol obviously not that well but good nonetheless.

So combat is traded in for Shenmue QTE events? That's the impression I got. Not too sure what to make of that.
Silent Hill games are really slow, and QTEs are always high-pressured occasions. The two seem incompatible, and a marriage may turn out rather ugly.
That screenshot reminds me of Condemned, which was cool.
MLS @ Apr 13th 2009 2:18PM
That didn't come off as QTEs to me. More like when someone grabs you in RE4 or Mad World, and you have to franticly mash or waggle to get them off.
Levi @ Apr 13th 2009 2:25PM
Agreed. I hope they didn't axe combat for QTE's. I usually run away from as many of the series' enemies as possible, but I would still have liked the option to shoot em.
Condemned (2, I didn't play 1) was the best implementation of QTE's I've seen. I usually pretty much hate them.
LeChuck @ Apr 13th 2009 9:52PM
From the Nintendo Power article:
"To be clear, these chase sequences aren't quick time events; you have full control over Harry and can choose whatever path you see fit to his destination."
A waypoint comes up on your map and it's up to you to choose the best way to get there while the monsters chase you, climbing over obstacles and on rooftops and trying to surround you. You can set up barricades to slow them down and use flares to repel them.
MLS @ Apr 13th 2009 1:55PM
"Most of the demo was spent in what passes for the "real world" in Silent Hill"
Oh my god, this game looks amazing and we haven't even gotten to the nightmare parts yet!
Holiday @ Apr 13th 2009 1:56PM
The only hope is that they will not make this cell phone feature stupid. I rememer the last two part of the game series- such a great disappointment. Hope this part will satisfy all the fans of the game.
Vacation in Australia
Foetoid @ May 8th 2009 8:17PM
Hell yeah Vacation in Australia. This place is fantastic. Free money, hot women, perfect weather, nicer cars!
wutdaheckman @ Apr 13th 2009 2:02PM
I wonder if reducing the fight mechanics allows to better utilize the systems resources.
anyway - game looks great - wii version will be the obvious way to go.
Reuben @ Apr 13th 2009 2:02PM
I have high hopes for this, though to be far, I am incredibly biased. I plan on getting a Wii in the near future, but I hate splitting up game franchises unless I absolutely have to, so I'll be picking this for either the PS2 or PSP. I'm interested in the idea of only being able to run away, especially because combat was not the focus of the previous installments (except for maybe Homecoming) but I pray that it does not turn out to be like Clock Tower. Running away from enemies in Clock Tower was more frustrating than terrifying.
I also like the idea of the camera, which is very Condemned, as Nigeria pointed out. I consider the first Condemned to be the most frightening game I have ever played.
bmXride437 @ Apr 13th 2009 2:05PM
i still don't get why it's ice.. seems random and sort of stupid to me.
ArchGamer @ Apr 13th 2009 2:11PM
May hell has frozen over because the wii is getting better looking games
Reuben @ Apr 13th 2009 2:14PM
I'm actually sort-of-almost with you on that. I believe their explanation is that the hell of Silent Hill's otherworld is subjective in how it presents itself, but so far 6 (I believe) protagonists have crossed over and the otherworld always presents itself as bloody, dilapidated and rusty. The only subjective thing about it has been the monsters and locales that are present.
In short, I'm not really buying the subjective bit.
bmXride437 @ Apr 13th 2009 2:31PM
i just feel like it's a ploy to make it more appealing to all the wii-folk out there, and less scary at face value... but i'm willing to give it the benefit of the doubt. i'm sure there's a story point that will make it somewhat plausible..
LeChuck @ Apr 13th 2009 10:01PM
@ Reuben:
It was mainly SH2 that presented Silent Hill's nightmare world as being subjective. James saw the rusted, water damaged version but the characters he encountered saw different things. Angela saw everything engulfed in flames. The little girl Laura didn't see monsters in the town at all.
nickux @ Apr 13th 2009 2:08PM
Nintendo Power's article stresses that combat hasn't been replaced with anything- it's been removed altogether. The only things you can wield are your flashlight, flares, and phone. That's it. No combat. You run from your life. And I love that concept and while I agree other games like Clock Tower (you run away from Scissor-Man right? Long time ago) I have hopes this concept will be better implemented here.
Nook @ Apr 13th 2009 2:34PM
*blinks*
No combat?
*blinks*
So this -in a way- is like Endless Ocean (crude example) - just replace water and marine life with buildings and nurses? replace pretty locations with scary locations?
For realz? No combat? Are you cereal?
Reuben @ Apr 13th 2009 2:43PM
@ Nook
Super cereal.
CJLopez @ Apr 13th 2009 4:44PM
As cereal as Corn Flakes can be
Anonymous @ Apr 14th 2009 3:20PM
Sounds like the game will be shit.
nickux @ Apr 13th 2009 2:36PM
Not really, you can't die in Endless Ocean. It's more about the thrill of the chase and that feeling of helplessness according to the devs.
OTAM @ Apr 13th 2009 2:39PM
Snow? Ice?
The stuff falling in Silent Hill is ash,not snow. Stupid people make me sad :(
Reuben @ Apr 13th 2009 2:45PM
Well, it's ash in the movie, but do believe it's snow in the original game. I could be wrong.
I've already commented like 5 times in this post, lol.
SithLibrarian @ Apr 13th 2009 2:51PM
And yes, in the original game it was snow.
Unit @ Apr 13th 2009 2:52PM
it's no longer ash, it's been replaced with snow and ice. It's good that they've replaced it. Because quite frankly the rusty dingy setting was getting tiresome. And as much as some may not like the switch, this series was in serious need of an overhaul.
w00ter @ Apr 13th 2009 3:37PM
"Snow? Ice?
The stuff falling in Silent Hill is ash,not snow. Stupid people make me sad :("
Yeah, the nightmare-world is ice now. Did you not catch that?
OTAM @ Apr 13th 2009 4:23PM
The nightmare world was always the nightmare world. Rusted, covered in blood, with insane/mind fuck things going on. Chains covered in limbs, buckets under drips of blood collecting it,etc.
The game mechanics and atmosphere don't need to be changed, someone needs to actually write a GOOD story for the game. That's what Silent Hill was,an interactive horror story. You think people hail Silent Hill 2 the way they do for it's combat?
Less emphasis on the stuff that's already proven and good. Let's get to work on a mind warp of a story.
Reuben @ Apr 13th 2009 4:29PM
I totally agree with you OTAM. What's needed is a good story. In my opinion, Silent Hill hasn't had a great story since the second game. I would like them to focus less on the cult aspect, and more on the psychological aspect.
Granted, I haven't completed Homecoming yet.
SithLibrarian @ Apr 13th 2009 2:50PM
The Otherworld is frozen? What...?
Shoyz @ Apr 13th 2009 3:17PM
Don't think just of the Ice-theme as what it is, but of what it's effects might be!
Think about it, how's running away from a monster, and then how's running away from a monster with frostbite, just to find the gate you came through frozen solid and impassable?
Though I really loved the horror-sense of the rusty/metal/blood version, making it ice-based allows a lot of creativity :D
Lard @ Apr 13th 2009 3:23PM
It's going to be absolute crap
Unit @ Apr 13th 2009 3:35PM
i believe that's what the last silent hill game on the ps3 and x360 was.
MisterSquared @ Apr 13th 2009 3:25PM
'Diner 52' in Comic Sans MS is kind of annoying me.
Landa @ Apr 13th 2009 4:03PM
Why can't Team Silent just make another good Silent Hill game? I'm all for a remake of the first to reach a new audience, but it seems this will just be a reinterpretation of the original experiences by Climax. Here's my super early criticism: why does Cybil look like a stripper playing a cop? Anybody else recall Cybil with an incredibly tight and cleavage-revealing top? No. This is what fan-fiction is made of. And really, Fatal Frame gimmicks? It worked for that game but the monsters in Silent Hill were not spooky apparitions revealed by your smart phone, but physical manifestations of delusions. I must admit this looks amazing for a Wii title, even though Harry looks dopey.
Unit @ Apr 13th 2009 4:23PM
"And really, Fatal Frame gimmicks? It worked for that game but the monsters in Silent Hill were not spooky apparitions revealed by your smart phone, but physical manifestations of delusions"...umm at what point in any of the previews did they state that you reveal or attack the enemies thru your camera phone? From what i read, it's used to help solve clues and doubles as your menu screen & map.
Triptych @ Apr 13th 2009 6:48PM
The amount of unfounded speculation that is being made in this thread unnerves me more than the potential psychological effects in this game.
Booger @ Apr 13th 2009 9:31PM
...are there two Cybils in this? That one looks quite a bit different than in other screenshots I've seen.
LeChuck @ Apr 13th 2009 10:06PM
The way Cybil dresses and acts is one of the things that changes depending on the choices you make and your answers to the psychological test at the beginning.
Triptych @ Apr 14th 2009 12:31AM
Bingo! Someone did their homework. There's much more potentially interesting to this game than what can be surmised in a handful of screen shots.
Booger @ Apr 14th 2009 3:46PM
See, that's what I was thinking. The subtitle of the game would seem to indicate that your recollection of certain characters and events would be altered depending on what kind of psych profile you exhibit... man.
I admit to being somewhat apprehensive towards this title when it was announced but now, I'm pretty keen on seeing what they can do with this angle.
Carrie @ Apr 14th 2009 1:27AM
Man that looks SUSPICIOUSLY like the 59 Diner we have here in Houston.
