It's been a difficult time for you, we know. While all your friends were getting the radical Red Ring of Death and happily cashing in on Microsoft's three-year Xbox 360 warranty, you had to make do with a decidedly less impressive (though equally cataclysmic) hardware failure, one that couldn't even manage to spit out more than a few crimson lights.
But your lonely torment is at an end, with Microsoft ceasing its defection discrimination and revealing via the Xbox Support page that the mysterious E74 error is now covered by the RROD's three-year warranty. Microsoft has determined "that the E74 error message can indicate the general hardware failure that is associated with three flashing red lights error on the console," and will "refund to customers the amount paid for an out of warranty repair due to a general hardware failure associated with the e74 error message." If you don't automatically receive this refund by July 1, 2009, you'll need to claim one through xbox.com/support before November 1, 2009.
Hooray! Welcome to the club, E74 victims! Um, sorry about your Xbox.
[Thanks, Peter]

Yes. Just like most operating systems, your Xbox keeps a log of all errors it encounters, and details regarding them (what kind of error it was, when it happened, etc). When you send in your Xbox, that's the first thing they look at.

Well, since we're talking about systems having issues, I'll talk abit about my PS3.
It's a launch 20 GB, and well, it's still running almost perfectly. Had it running F@H for the longest time, still plays everything, only it is slowly starting to have odd artifacts in games. Things like playing RE5 and having a few polygons stretch out to infinity, but only like 3-4 in the whole level. It's happening in a few other games too, where objects just have one point that is off in nowhere, but the game is perfectly playable and everything else is perfect.
Guitar Hero World tour is perfect, aside from a completely glitched out career selection screen, but then actual playing is just fine. It's freaky, and no errors, no lights nothing.
I almost wish it would just explode or something so I can get it fixed and have a perfect system. It's only broken enough to be annoying. I just don't want to fix it since I don't want to lose the BC of the launch systems.

Me too man. I've been wondering what to do about mine for a while now.
There's a few videos on youtube showing how you can get it working again temporarily.
This news got my hopes up, and upon reading the details, promptly let them down again. Close, but no cigar.

And me! I've got an E73 - was hoping it would be covered as well: Joystiq PLEASE raise the profile of E73 message like you did with E74 - seems like its just as widespread...
What gets me is that E73 is supposedly network port related: mine only did it after i downloaded a demo over XBL for the first time! typical....

What about those of us who opened the console in an attempt to fix the thing, thinking there was no hope for a refund and/or free fix by the big M?
Can we still get compensation? :(

How long has it been since Xbox 360 came out? Microsoft still can't get things right. I'm an owner of an XBOX and a XBOX 360. But as soon as my 360 dies I'm looking for alternative reliable hardware. This is Bull$#!^, I hate the fact knowing my 360 will eventually die on me.
NO ONE should accept this crap from Microsoft. They should refund everyones money or replace our 360's with something we hope that starts up everytime its turned on.
And please...no one give me this PS3 fanboy crap. Cause I hate the PS3, and its uncomfy ugly controller.

Then you can just settle for a Wii...
Or make your own console out of sticks and rocks. With perfect controllers, and reliable hardware (hard to break a rock).

Thanks Tyler,
I was thinking more on the lines of upgrading my PC.....but thanks for the information. As for the Wii, I experienced the same visuals 7 years ago why would I want to go back to that again?

I like my xbox360, I would by a new one tomorrow if it died today. That being said, the 3 year warranty isn't enough any more - there are just too many problems. I bought a launch console (replaced 3 times - all different reasons) so the warranty won't do me any good. I think there are a number of xbox issues that MS should warranty for as long as they continue supporting the 360!
That's not forever, but it also doesn't leave us early adopters out in the cold.

Bloody Hell. just over one month since i took mine apart, and they say it's under warranty. oh, well, i had already bought an elite when it died, so now it's just a valuable hardware lesson.

Don't worry when the next Xbox arrives Microfiend will assure everyone that the errors of the past have been done away with and they'll all flock out to get a brand new console, they'll plug it in and several minutes the later the internet will be ablaze with "Oh-no's my xbox are broken" among other diatribes.
See ya then boys! No where is my history book?

Anyone have any idea if they'll repair an pre-opened console? I bought mine second-hand and the guy told me he had opened it up once.
