Is anyone even really interested in a DJ rhythm game anyway? I know retailers aren't going to be happy with more huge gaming peripherals clogging up their limited retail space.

Yeah I was excited, but for different reasons.
It won me a community elected "Hater Of The Year' nomination too!

...

*whispers: I still love you though, Markez!*

Considering the popularity of both DJ Max Portable and Beatmania series, I'd have to say, "You are fucking retarded?"

In other words, Scratch is the last hope for those of us tired of importing Beatmania copies and trying to pay less than $100 when our controllers go out.

You went outta your way to make baseless assumptions, attack, and put words in my mouth. No worries pal, just the interwebz.

http://www.joystiq.com/2009/03/22/scratch-the-ultimate-dj-the-first-trailer/

And to my pals Johnny & Sly who will likely swing by this thread, Immortal Technique is at Cane's here on the 22nd, same spot I saw De La a month ago. Might have to check 'em out!

I made an initial statement, and I defended that statement.
I didn't mean to put words in your mouth, or to attack you.

It got a bit heated, I admit and I probably lost context along the way. I apologize.

Anyways, like you said, no worries. And ust for the record; I got a great deal of respect for you, since most if not all your comments are read-worthy.

Yeah no worries, man :) *eHugz*

@ Sly - You heard of Lyrics Born? He opened for De La Soul, I was pleasantly surprised, nice live band and all. 22nd is a friggin' Wednesday, not terribly ideal for a show, we'll see. Saw Dave Matthews at Alpine Valley like 5-6 years ago, was a lot of fun.

I agree with the OP. Before long, we're going to have Spoon Hero, Didgeridoo Hero, Sitar Hero and an endless stream of other cash-in titles. Seriously, with the rate these games get DLC, why do we need 10 different versions of a game that lets you pretend to play music?

Sorry, I just don't get these "games".

What happened to the once so great publisher that brought us the good old Tony Hawk games?

My guess is their trying to delay it because they know it will flop and they don't want their feelings to get hurt:) J/K but who really cares about a DJ game?

This is depressing to me for a few reasons.

1. Activision's only clue on what makes a good rhythm game comes directly from Harmonix.

2. It would be nice to see some competition in this genre since Beatmania has DJ Max beaten purely by seniority.

3. Konami sure as fuck isn't looking into bringing their hit franchise across the pond.

4. It's instantly reminding me of the Rock Band on PS3 shenanigans. Activision actively fucked Rock Band as well.

you can't really compare dj max to beatmania... it's like comparing frequency to rock band. similar in some ways, completely different in every other way.

Making such a statement begs the question if you've ever played either. It's not like comparing Frequency to Rock Band at all. Two drastically different products. It's more like comparing DDR to In The Groove.

Allow me to explain...

Beatmania has a visualizer movie which plays in the middleground during gameplay. DJ Max Portable has a visualization movie which plays in the background during gameplay.

Beatmania features occasional hits on a "scratch pad." DJ Max Portable will often have a glowing middle bar where players rotate the PSP nub in time to the music.

Beatmania features a background music track and assigns sound effects to the buttons to "play" over the music track. Meaning that you have the ability to add beats or notes to allow your own freestyle. DJ Max Portable runs off the exact same design.

The only thing that's really different is the controls and the controller. For example, 5 key or 7 key on Beatmania. 4, 5, 6, and 8 key for DJ Max Portable.

i've played dj max, seen beatmania, and played frequency and rock band.

beatmania is a more tactile experience (from what i've seen close up, i've never been able to play it) and dj max felt like guitar hero on steroids with a dj skin.

If only you knew.. One of the members of Freezepop (of Frequency, Amplitude, Guitar Heroes 1 & 2, and Rock Band fame) is named "The other Sean T. Drinkwater." He claims to be a clone of the original, which of course makes you think his real name is just "Sean T. Drinkwater." One of the other members of Freezepop, Kasson Crooker, was the audio director or something for Harmonix. it makes me wonder if Trevor Drinkwater is Sean T. Drinkwater. Anyone else notice this or thinking this?

I dont know if this has any merit, but it has to be said that Scratch exists in demo form and the controller is almost complete (/rumorAndSpeculation) so it could seem as though it were true.

We haven't seen a single screenshot of DJ Hero yet... and if it didn't have a developer attached to it, I would have assumed that, if Activision would have successful acquired Scratch, it might have just rebranded it as DJ Hero to save it the time and money.

/off-topic
Oh and DJ max started out as a Korean Beatmania clone for the PC, so the In The Groove and DDR comparision is very accurate...Thats of course not to say that DJ Max is not as good as Beatmania or as difficult, there is just something lost with the no custom controller setup like Beatmania has.

/reallyOffTopic
I would love for beatmania to get popular here but with the commercial failure of Beatmania for the PS2 (say what you want about the song selection, i loved it), and the recent flop of Rock Revolution makes me think that we'll never see Beatmania in the US again. So if you want a DJ "Simulator" game the only chance most will have is Scratch:TUDJ, DJ MAX, and...dj Hero. (Heck even if dj Hero was a 1:1 clone of Beatmania IIDX with different graphics and the same song list i might have to acquiesce)

Holy crap it's actually happening. EA and Activision have done a body swap and now Activision is being the evil one! It's like a video game version of Face Off!

In all seriousness though, given how much Activision have been total dicks about Guitar Hero (No we won't use your peripheral patch for free, and we are gonna accuse the original developers of ripping it off, and hey, why don't we Madden out the whole franchise too!), this wouldn't surprise me. Dangit if Activision manages to ruin the spiritual return of Beatmania, I'm gonna go Dishwasher on their head offices.
