In what could be the most fitting metaphor for the new millennium, Dude, Where's My Car? star Ashton Kutcher is currently racing news network CNN to become the first to reach 1,000,000 followers on microblogging site Twitter. Because this isn't depressing enough, EA says it's going to give Ashton's 1,000,000th follower a spot in a new EA game.
Not sure which game the winner will appear in, but we're assuming it'll be Dante's Inferno seeing as, apparently, we're already in Hell.

Actually, there are celebrities on Twitter that actually respond to regular users chatting about different stuff...
And honestly, I used to be a huge fan of That 70s Show, so I got no problem with Kutcher.

No, I think they'll just make that person a DLC addon for the Sims 3, which probably is included in the game, but you gotta pay 10 bucks for it to unlock it.
Atleast they'll get one sale out of it, since the person who got picked wants to buy it.

The great thing about Twitter isn't posting shit no one cares about, it's showing everyone online that I did.

I love Kelso, but that's not really fair to give it to the million person. It should be one of the million. There is no incentive for me to follow now.

Oh, yeah, wait. You guys want a "relative" comment. Meh, EA could do better, plus being portrayed as a demon would not be... fun.

So by any chance is he just short of 1,000,000 subscribers to his
Twitter already? 'Cause if not, this is possibly the most retarded marketing campaign* ever. If they're giving the prize to the millionth subscriber, anyone with half a brain should realize that they should absolutely avoid subscribing to his Twitter until it gets to somewhere like 999,000** subscribers. That said, I suppose they might just be catering to their demographic...
*I realize this isn't quite a marketing campaign, but I couldn't think of a more apt term
**I haven't the slightest clue how quickly his Twitter subscriptions might be escalating, so I just threw that number out there, when it might have made more sense to propose something like 975,000 or 999,900
...Wow, I must be particularly AR today if I'm including footnotes in my Joystiq comments.

Okay, if that isn't whoring yourself out to get followers, I don't know what is.
That said, I love Twitter and its use by some celebrities to communicate with fans directly and transparently.
My main reason for using Twitter is to follow people I'm interested in, mostly Joystiq or video game journalism related. I'm also always trying to find other Joystiq tweeple to add to my collection, so hit me up, kids!

I don't know what's sadder. The fact that EA is supporting this stupid Ashton V. CNN thing or the fact that Dane Cook is all butt hurt over the fact that someone one might have more fake friends then he does on a social networking site and has thrown himself into the race (I'm referring to a bulletin I read on myspace).
The saddest fact of all though, is that I'm friends with Dane Cook on myspace.

I for one think twitter is kinda fun and actually useful.
However, I am afraid that if I ever Followed Ashton's Twitter, it would be mandatory by statute 407.61 of the unified man code (UMC) that I kick my own ass.

AS PER EA:
Ashton,
We've seen that a lot of people are waiting to Follow you so they can be the 1,000,000th person and get made to be played in The Sims 3. As a result we're upping the ante and offering 10 games of choice to any user for milestones you select between now and 1,000,000.
For example - If you want to give away 10 games to the 960,054th Follower or the 978.576th...do it!
You let us know what Followers you want to hook up and we'll make it happen.
Pushing to 1,000,000!
Team EA
