Joystiq hands-on: Rock Band Unplugged

Those who have played Harmonix's earlier efforts will be immediately familiar with Unplugged, while others will have to come to grips with the multi-track concept. The handheld Rock Band features all four instruments from the console games, but the lone player must tackle them all. Each track features its own note layout, and players will be switching from one instrument to another to get a high score.
There are no peripherals to use in this portable iteration. Instead, players will use the directional pad and face buttons to hit the colored notes that stream down. Red, Yellow, Green and Blue are represented by Left, Up, Triangle and Circle respectively. (There is no fifth button in this game.) It may not be instantly intuitive, but it only takes a song or two to get accustomed to the controls. DJ Max Fever shouldn't have much trouble here.

In the default Tour mode, you'll want to earn multipliers by successfully completing phrases in succession. For example, a few lines of singing will equate to a single phrase. If you manage to hit all the notes, you'll clear that track temporarily, earn a multiplier, and will be able to continue the streak by hitting all the notes on a different instrument. Switching between the various instruments is easy: just hit either the left or right shoulder button. With a careful eye and precise reflexes, you'll be racking up some truly outlandish scores in all the songs.
The PSP's audio capabilities are put to good use. The fidelity of the audio is solid, and we were impressed by the mixing of the four instruments. The instrument you're playing will be the most audible, so switching between the four tracks creates a rather surreal effect. This is definitely a game you'll want to play with your headphones.
We're a little disappointed by Unplugged's lack of a multiplayer mode, considering the Rock Band name has become synonymous with four-player fun. However, we're not sure if this kind of gameplay would translate well to a multiplayer experience -- the fun and the challenge comes from switching between the various tracks. Every other aspect of the console Rock Band experience arrives on the handheld intact: the World Tour mode, character/band creation tools, and yes, even an in-game music store.
41 songs will be included on the Unplugged UMD, of which 9 will be exclusive to PSP for a few months. The PSP Music Store will then feature 10 additional songs at launch, with new songs available every few weeks. The song list on the PSP won't ever be as comprehensive as the ones featured on the consoles, but should extend the life of Unplugged greatly. Songs will cost the usual $0.99 to $1.99 per song.
Partial Song List:
Rock Band Unplugged may not be what Rock Band fans expect, but it's still a fun, fully-featured addition to the franchise. PSP hasn't had many high-profile titles hit the system in recent months, but Unplugged will easily keep PSP owners occupied for quite some time. Impressive production values, a lengthy song list, and the Jackson 5 make this a title you should keep an eye on. Unplugged will be available on June 9th.

i thought i saw some instrument switching in the initial video, and i'm glad to see its still here. i was a bit skeptical when i first saw it, but then again beats is totally amazing. i'm so happy that the psp is finally getting some really solid titles again
linebeginstoblur @ Apr 15th 2009 9:36AM
Yeah, the PSP has been in a major drought lately, but it seems to be picking itself up now. Experimenting with a digital-only Patapon 2, a freaking Amplitude sequel.. I think things are looking up for the PSP lately.
zuburi @ Apr 15th 2009 12:30PM
Mine picked a hell of a time to break. The d-pad was getting "stuck," acting like it was constantly being pressed to the right (or left, can't remember). I bought some replacement parts, but they didn't fit perfectly - maybe it was because I had a Japanese launch system? I don't know.
Anyhow, the screen just ended up blowing out, too. I can't bring myself to buy a new one, but I really want one.
Black Mage @ Apr 15th 2009 12:35PM
@linebeginstoblur -- I partially agree. While the PSP suffered an awful drought last year this year is the complete opposite. So far every month since December has seen 4 or more PSP releases, with a AAA title every month or 2. And for me the Patapon 2 digital only is a plus, and I hope more games do it in the future.

It looks like I need a PSP again...Every time a good game comes out I buy a PSP from someone, get the new game, beat it, and then resell my PSP because I have nothing else to play on it. With all the games coming out lately and in the future I might need to finally buy a PSP and hold onto it.

They are also releasing the carnival colored PSPs from Japan here in North America. It really has been a great 4-5 months of PSP releases with games like loco roco 2, resistance retribution, prinny: can I be the hero?, hammerin hero (epic), Tenchu, Phantasy Star Portable, samurai showdown anthology, dj max fever, midnight club LA & MLB 09 The Show. I'm happy to see the system get picked up publisher support because it is such a beast of a system.
Since I upgraded to a 3000 I haven't been able to put the damn thing down. My PS3 is really starting to get jealous because I hardly turn it on anymore.
Oh ... and as for rockband unplugged ... day 1 purchase for me.

good game to have on the road I suppose. would be NICE if it were released on the PS Store on the Release date as well....

I can't wait for Kryptonite, ABC and Less Talk More Rokk to reach XBL & PSN.
DO WANT.

Rock Band for the PSP is not the same as Rock Band for consoles. And that's awesome.
I've been dreaming of an Amplitude with DLC, but was worried, since Harmonix is so busy with Rock Band, but my dreams have literally just come true.
s256 [Sypha-Thrall] @ Apr 16th 2009 2:27AM
This might be the game that finally convinces me that the PSP is worth it to me. I'll then get DJMAX. I'll enjoy Rock Band Unplugged!
Ezio Auditore de Firenze (PSN slycooper_rocker) @ Apr 15th 2009 10:21AM
that track list is great. i can't count how many times i've said that...
aristokrat @ Apr 15th 2009 10:38AM
Seems odd for Joystiq to compare it to Frequency, when Amplitude is probably the game that more people played. Also, it appears that RBU is much more similar to Amplitude, such as having the flat tracks instead of the circular tube (not that there are that many differences anyway).
David @ Apr 15th 2009 10:43AM
The gameplay style doesn't lend well to multiplayer???
Of course it does! Amplitude had a great 4 player multiplayer mode...it was lots of fun and it could be even be played online via broadband and dial-up (yeah dial-up! I used to play it that way when it was released lol). You could even attack other players with different powerups.
Amplitude's multiplayer mode still remains as one of the best multiplayer experiences I've had...sadly not many people played that game but it was really fun. For those that don't know, Amplitude was the sequel to Frequency so it too plays the same as Rock Band Unplugged. Ad-hoc multiplayer would be very fun in Rock Band Unplugged...that is if it retains the hard note placement of the Frequency/Ampltude.
Martin @ Apr 15th 2009 10:55AM
So, are those few songs exclusive to the PSP, or the Rock Band franchise? My guess is both, which would lead me to assume that Miss Murder won't be on GH: Smash Hits.
hurricane @ Apr 15th 2009 12:12PM
I wouldn't say that. More like... released on the PSP prior to release as RB DLC. That is all.
JonFitt @ Apr 15th 2009 10:55AM
Hmm. Personally, if I'm not playing with a plastic instrument of some kind it just makes the simple nature of the music game genre apparent: Hit buttons when they cross a line. It's like one long quick time event and does not appeal at all.
Oobgarm @ Apr 15th 2009 11:10AM
Seeing that this is a flat plane and not a tunnel, it's more like a spiritual successor to Amplitude, not FreQuency. Music kinda fits, too.
Absolutely a day one purchase for me. That's saying a lot, since I rarely play my PSP outside of the occasional emulator.
baby sea tuna @ Apr 15th 2009 11:15AM
This just became a lot less exciting now that I've seen the track list pretty much consists of songs I've been skipping over for the past year or two on Rock Band.

Isn't Buddy Holly a DLC track? if you bought it and don't like it you only have yourself to blame.
cafecito @ Apr 15th 2009 11:43AM
I hope this is healthier to play than DJ Max...
why not the LS2LS7? @ Apr 15th 2009 11:56AM
Very disappointed about the change in music style. Guitar fans already have 100 games to play, why can't electronic music fans have a new game?
hurricane @ Apr 15th 2009 12:16PM
Maybe they want it to sell better?
Angel Mass @ Apr 15th 2009 12:06PM

Bipolar Mike @ Apr 15th 2009 12:15PM
WOOT FOR A REAL FREQUENCY / AMPLITUDE SEQUEL!!!
CrashSpyro123 @ Apr 15th 2009 12:28PM
Wait, Carry on Wayward Son isn't available as Rock Band DLC yet, right? Does this confirm that it'll be out soon.
PR0F3TA @ Apr 15th 2009 1:04PM
Carry on Wayward Son is already in the ROCK BAND 2 disc, no need to buy DLC.

This is probably the first game in a long time that has made me regret giving up my psp. This is great news, I was a huge Frequency/Amplitude fan.
nlspoh @ Apr 15th 2009 4:52PM
havent really tried many similar games (other than Guitar Hero on the Wii), so this will be pretty new to me. How exactly will the DLC work? Will it just be offered on the Playstation Store?
PN04 @ Apr 16th 2009 12:32AM
The PSP has it's own Playstation store to download from, yes it will likely be on the PS3 store but you still have to connect the PSP to install it.
Epsilon @ Apr 15th 2009 7:20PM
Meh, gonna have to say that at least for portables, Guitar Hero looks better. No instruments or multiplayer? Kinda lame, imo. Why not have it on DSi instead? Use guitar grip for guitar, touchscreen for drums, and mic for vocals, seems obvious to me.
Epsilon @ Apr 15th 2009 7:20PM
Scratch that, DSi doesn't have a GBA slot.
stormtrooper190 @ Apr 15th 2009 7:42PM
i was gowwing to get this until i found out that there is no add ones for the psp for it. now im not interisted
PN04 @ Apr 16th 2009 12:34AM
Add-ons for portable devices just make them clunky and less portable. You want a big plastic instrument go play the regular versions.
As for multiplayer. 2 things: one wifi is disabled in games that push the processor to 333mhz so it's possible they couldnt even have done it multiplayer if they wanted to because of this, second even if they could the thing they say about the game is that it seems to be better to play in a singular environment because of the challange of juggling 4 band members at one time, complexity is even lowered a notch with it being 4 buttons rather than five.
A while back the Developers expressed interest in making a sequel to sony's FreQ/Amp, and when sony unveiled the PSP at E3 one of the demos was a cityscape much like the ones in FreQ/Amp (I think it was even called 'harmonix city'), so even then they were thinking about it, but due to their current connections/commitments with EA there was probably a need to push the RockBand franchise and this was the compromise. Same basic gameplay but for a system who's owners would appreciate the familiar gameplay from the PS2.
They may be choosing to take more risks with the PSP version in terms of music selection since there's an opportunity and it'll make it easier for people to buy original tracks for the PSP that they cant play on the PS3 (and frankly who wants to buy the same song twice? Or atleast offer a discount for songs you've already bought because I'm not paying 2 bucks a pop in this ecconomy.) But for those that miss the Techno type music isnt DJmax and all the other bemani games more your taste anyway? not like there's a shortage of those.
tawoody84 @ Apr 17th 2009 5:08PM
Nice
Dowse @ Apr 18th 2009 10:55AM
Surely the idea of Rock band and Guitar hero was to imitate playing the instruments...
Fleakitten @ Apr 18th 2009 12:50PM
Typical.
I've been wanting them to add Miss Murder to the RB line up and since they know I don't have a PSP they decided to add it for this version instead. >.>
ritchie @ Apr 19th 2009 9:52AM
.lll
tobz1000 @ Apr 19th 2009 1:52PM
How could multiplayer not fit in? There's nothing wrong with taking a break from instrument switching if it means your friends can take over. I imagine it wouldn't be too hard to get this game working via game sharing (requiring one UMD), and since it's a handheld each person's screen could be dedicated to their instrument with others' progress in the background, in a similar layout to the one they look to be using by that screenshot anyway. Oh well. =/
legoman917 @ Apr 19th 2009 7:50PM
I think the game is going to be frickin awesome! And for the first time they made it for the psp! the only thing i dont like is the controls. If they fix the controls soon the game would be of the hook!
dreams.are.lies @ Apr 22nd 2009 11:24AM
whats wrong with the controls?
In DJ Max its far more complex controls and sure is hell of fun playng with 8 notes! eheh
