It's great to see at least 1 japanese developer who gets it. The fact that it's someone of his fame only makes it better and should help japan get out of this rut they're in.

Ok for those of you who didn't get the memo we sent out the other day, female SAM is my E-stalker and is to be ignored. As honored as I am to be (in)famous enough to have one (actually my 2nd), I'm not allowed to actually talk to it.

@female SAM: I don't see any problem with Western and Japanese developers working together to produce games. It doesn't have to mean a "whitewash" of a Japanese product or a "Japanify" of a Western product. It's just called collaboration.

Whether tmac is right in assuming this is what's best for all Japanese developers, etc. is a different story. I just think it couldn't hurt anyone to have a multicultural collaboration.

Was his GDC presentation just a long winded, confusing, round about way of saying he wouldn't mind utilizing western game engines?

How does he want to work with them exactly?

I just wish that Kojima would have held off a little on Westernizing MGS4.
He obviously likes the Western way now, but I wish MGS4 played like MGS1,2, and Snake Eater (Not subsistance).

MGS4 was an amazing game. But I wish he would have held off on the Westernizing and just made it like he would another MGS - and leave the Westernizing to another IP.

Still a good game.

I wish I could meet Kojima face to face so I could get to the bottom of the conundrum of his obsession with western studios. Why would one be fascinated by those who by definition are inferior to oneself.

I cannot seriously wrap the fact that he seems to be infatuated with that repetitive piece of buggy, boring garbage, Assassins Creed. I suspect he must hold in high regard the fact that western studios, being much richer than their Japanese counterparts, generally have a tendency to produce more impressive technology driving in their games.

Of course having the luxury of catering to an audience that does not care about being served the exact same two decade old beaten-to-death gameplay as long as it sports a shiny coat to distract them does make their jobs that much easier.

Guess I should extend my comment so I don't completely look like an irrational snarky douche.

Saying that either western or eastern developers are inferior to eachother in terms of creativity as such a blank statement is silly and inaccurate. Both sides produce great games, both produce bad. Both recycle themes and gameplay and both innovate- in their own way. Just because they are different does not make one side inferior. As much as weeaboos will scream about steroid filled space marines shooting aliens, neckbeards will counter with androgynous angsty male teens.

Anyone who blindly defends one "side" while attacking the other is an idiot.

ihavepants, I think for a person who hates Japanese or white people games, those games are definitely inferior to whatever games they prefer. I mean, you can't just sit around saying you prefer white women over black, rock music over rap, Republicans over Democrats, etc etc and then just say "oh they're different, not inferior."

Equality simply doesn't exist anywhere or in anything.

I beg to differ, I'm not even talking about liking these games, but judging them from a creative standpoint. It's not a question of what you prefer playing but whether what they're creating is new, refined or rehashed.

"Equality simply doesn't exist anywhere or in anything."

I disagree. If it doesn't exist it's not because it can't but because there are people like you standing around saying that you shouldn't even try. Humans can go much further with their minds then the basic instincts a lot of people still seem to base their actions and thoughts off.

@Charlie_Six

I believe his point is that it is subjective and therefore there is no legitimate basis for making a claim about the superiority of one over the other as being factual. Saying "I like Japanese games better than Western games" can be perfectly factual as it is a statement about one's personal preferences, whereas saying "Western games are inferior to Japanese games" is not factual as it is masking a subjective claim as being objective when there is little to no way to actual validate said claim.

Also, Western games aren't "white people" games. The differences between Japanese and Western games isn't based in race, it's based in culture.

Uh, why can't you? :S Having preferences != stating one thing is superior/inferior to another.

I like the color violet, but I wouldn't say it is superior to the color green. Because they are just different colors. Inferring superiority/inferiority has a lot more to do with world views than simple preferences, as in the case of game design.

MGS4 it still had a deeper storyline than anything I've experienced on the 360, Wii, or PS3. Although COD4's was good, and WaW as fun to play. Hm...

I want an entire game centered around controlling various types of Metal Gears. It'll be like that one part of MGS4 :)

Maybe it'll be set 50 years in the future of MGS4. Hundreds of Metal Gears populate the world's armies. *swoon*

These 3 already work in collaboration, might as well have Kojima head up some effort since he's the visionary and all. Maybe something like how Glenn Schofield was able to pick out a team for Dead Space.

Well en light of such recent releases as MGS4 & RE5 with there outdated controls. It shows just how much Japanese game developers are lagging behind western developers. So yeah, I think more Japanese game developers should start collaborating with Western developers. We the gamers will benefit the most.

Yeah MGS4 basically has the same controls that were used in MGS2. They've added a few more options, like a first person view, but it's still outdated and clunky. If you implemented Gears of War style controls to MGS, where you could easily duck and cover on the fly, easily look around corners and add crouching for sneaking around. You'd get a much better experience.

And FPV was is in MGS2.
But wow. MGS4 changed the MGS series so much. They made it for America... They changed everything... and you are saying it's the same.. man... wow.. I'm sorry. But I don't think you've played MGS2.
