While Microsoft often touts the Xbox 360's impressive attach rate -- the number of games sold per console -- Sony isn't sitting on its laurels. According to recent Sony comments to Gamasutra, the PS3 has a higher attach rate than the Xbox 360 when it comes to multiplatform titles. So ... what does that mean?
Basically, the claim is that many multiplatform games sell to a higher percentage of PS3 owners than Xbox 360 owners. In other words, the 402,919 copies of Street Fighter IV sold on PS3 represents a larger percentage of its installed base than the 446,435 sold on Xbox 360. Thus, the attach rate for the PS3 version is higher, even though it's sold fewer copies. Sony also cites Metacritic data in this campaign, noting that PS3 has a higher percentage (there's that word again) of titles with a score of 80 or higher than Xbox 360.
The elephant in the room, of course: Microsoft's console has a larger installed base -- by about 7 million or so -- and a larger software library, tilting the odd percentage game in Sony's favor. There's a valid point to be made here, specifically that certain multiplatform game sales are faring very well on PS3 despite the console's smaller installed base. You just have to unwind the spin to find it.

This thread will turn out like a MacGruber bit, conversation (likely putting it politely) starts to ensue and then right in the middle of someone saying something, the whole joint explodes! And then MAAACGRUUUUBER!!!
Feel like I haven't seen an article on attach rates in some time. Soooo see plenty of articles on console sales, and a guideline seems to follow that largest console/user base, equals console with the largest amount of shovelware.
Does the argument that smaller user base, or what used to be the most expensive console necessarily equal highest attach rate?

It's a notable argument but not worth spouting to the masses. It only causes the web to heat up with flame wars.
It's easier to talk attach rates when you don't have as many systems in the market. I'd imagine that the Wii has a horrible attach rate considering that it has 4 to 5 times as many consoles placed than Sony or MS.
Oh well, good news for Sony. For MS aficionados: let the flame war begin.

It makes sense....
If I made my own console and sold it to myself, had Capcom port SF4 to my console and bought one for myself, it would mean 100% attach rate on 100% of the games sold on my console.... it a useless statistic for anyone other than the console maker though.

I really dislike the spin going on here by Sony Mr. Blue. Percentage wise means nothing compared to units sold since units sold equates to more profit, especially, if one is being manufactuered on cheaper DVD9s versus more cost-expensive blu-ray discs.
Its like a mcdonalds employee saying "I got a raise of $1.00 an hour this year! Yes, sir! I'm moving up to the top! I'm now making 13% more money this next year than I made last! I OWNED my parents. They only got a 5% raise. I'm so going to overtake them!"
and his friend responding, "But dude, your parents make $60,000 a year more than you...EACH",
"But I win in percent increase! It's only a matter of time working at McDonalds till that $60,000 gap closes!"
The actual important data given here is that xbox 360 makes more more for multiplatform games than the PS3. Since 446,435 games sold at equal price is more profit than 402,919, especially if the medium the 446,435 were printed on were cheaper or if the system was easier to program for and took less time to create the game on.

Wes its not spin its pure statistical analysis.
Sony published this in response to Aaron Greenberg. Aaron Greenberg is a Microsoft exec that is full of hot air.
It was in response to:
http://www.gamasutra.com/php-bin/news_index.php?story=22833
You want spin ?
Aaron Greenberg states in that article:
Greenberg did not reveal specific numbers, but did reiterate that it was "the most successful game add-on content we've ever launched."
"If that content was sold at retail, it would be one of the best sellers across all platforms," he added. "It would have outsold Killzone 2."
Gamasutra, then add this fact:
(Guerrilla Games' PlayStation 3-exclusive Killzone 2 sold 323,000 units in February, but while The Lost & Damned was on sale for nearly two weeks in that month, Killzone 2 was on sale for only several days.)"
Do you see the difference here ?
Take 3-4 days worth of sales for killzone2 then compare that data to a few weeks worth of sales and then round it up for the month and try and pass that off for correct analysis of data.
Microsoft lie and tweak the figures.. I guess Sony felt like it had to reply to Greenbergs bullshit. They purely use numbers already published with full sources of where they get the numbers from.
Look through the Microsoft figures, notice how most of it is from unnamed sources.
Now tell me how is the Sony numbers spin ? Take the same numbers and you do the calculations yourself. See if Sony is right or wrong, while your at it try to find the sources and try to prove Microsofts statements for me. Because their statements read as spin and bullshit to me :)

Anyone want to statistically normalize the data that Sony and Microsoft are saying?
Regardless of Sony's intent with this attach-rate flame war, it does seem like Sony has a slightly higher attach rate than the 360.
One of the other things I'd like to know about their data is how many of those consoles are unique to one individual and not 2 spare Xbox360s per user. I know that Joystiq and many gaming journalists have multiple 360s just in case their machine somehow bites the dust. I don't really see a reason why a user would have multiple PS3 machines but I can see how Xbox360 users might have multiple machines.
The other thing is that we often don't get much data from resellers like GameStop about their "used games" portfolio. A lot of people buy games, beat the game as quickly as possible, and then ditch it at GameStop. This essentially makes me wonder about what the real "attach rate" is if resale is such a huge market.
And that, I believe, is something that we'd have to consider more seriously when these console companies throw statistics around like that.

This is some pretty bad number spinning. With this same spin, the PS2 was a failure because Soul Calibur sold to 2% of PS2 owners whereas it sold to 50% of GameCube owners.

Bottom line: SC2 sold just under a million on the PS2 which has sold 50 million units and SC2 sold just OVER a million on the GC which has sold 12 million units. By Sony's jargon the PS2 is losing which is obviously ridiculous.

But they aren't saying that the XBox360 is losing because of these numbers. They are just simply countering a statement from MS saying that there was a huge game sales gap between the two consoles. While both Sony and MS need to just STFU, this is such an extremely mild "spin".

Dunno if Id go that far. There is a difference between skewed data and just a meaningless statistic. I think that is what he was getting at.
Attach rates have always been kind of pointless unless you are a higher-up at a company, because it plays into licensing. Again though, to the consumer its a meaningless statistic, just like Accessory attach rates. As a consumer it just doesn't matter, in games the only thing that should matter is if they are any good.

All this proves is that there is a better range of games on the 360, and better non-multiplatform games, as the 360 has a higher attach rate. There are more good games available for the platform, so the AAA multiplatform games sell less... makes sense but it's hardly something for Sony to brag about.

I don't think it proves that at all. Many of the PS3 exclusives aren't as popular as Halo or Gears which means they aren't going to sell well, but that doesn't mean that the exclusives are better or worse than 360's exclusives.
I do think that Sony shouldn't be throwing this info out though. It just shows that they're losing by a lot.

Sony didn't need to do this, they aren't playing with the figures, it doesn't really prove anything other than disprove Microsoft's claims. I guess they felt like they had to reply back to Microsoft's bullshit.
Aaron Greenbergs bullshit is here:

Note the use of fudged up statistical analysis Greenberg uses, glad gamasutra points it out in the article.

now i dont want to sound like a fanboy, but why does sony always try to claim its doing something it isnt, its a great console, but im pretty sure games like cod 4 and 5 (two really big multiplatform games) sold more on the 360 than the ps3.
this attached rate thing just seems like a way of saying, we have less consoles sold, look at us!

Yes, we know that CoD 4, 5 any other multiplatform game has sold more on 360 than PS3.Do you wanna know why Rhamesy?Because there is more 360s sold than the PS3. Basically 2:1 in the states.Bottom-line, Sony and Microsoft will continue their pissing match against each other while we gamers are reaping the benefits by playing great games on our console(s) of choice. However, w/ SFIV only selling 40K more on 360 than PS3 and the 360 having around 6 mil to 7 mil systems more in states, thats still pretty good for Sony though.
