Square Enix trademark may reveal title of new action game
The May issue of PlayStation: The Official Magazine made an announcement that likely piqued the interest of Squeenix fanboys worldwide -- the renowned RPG developer is currently working on an unannounced action title. Unfortunately, that's the only tidbit about the game which the magazine revealed -- no title, launch platforms, release date or gameplay details were mentioned. Given the nature of the source of this information, we're guessing it's a PS3 title -- but that's an assumption that has hurt us very deeply in the past.
However, a recent Square Enix trademark filing may shed some light on the moniker of its upcoming, unspoken game. Late last week, the developer reserved the name Vanguard Storm with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. As far as we know, the title has no connection to any franchises within Square Enix's expansive catalog. We could postulate further, but instead we'll wait for the next issue of PlayStation: The Official Magazine, which promises to blow the doors off this action-packed sucka.

A storm of vanguards, eh?

This generation sucks across the board (exception to handhelds). Graphically, nothing stellar if you played PC games during the transition. Gameplay has been horrible too with little innovation across the board. A few gems here and there, but nothing like the previous generations.
Sure, there are a lot of "good" games to be had, but very little where you can say, I didn't do this before, or didn't think this was even possible... Just sequels and rehash orgies.
That being said, Square (not the enix part) has always been great at making grade A titles that showcase the graphical ability of consoles. FFXIII seems to be doing that for PS3/360 and hopefully that will continue with their new games.

"but very little where you can say, I didn't do this before, or didn't think this was even possible"
Couldn't hear ya playing Dead Risisng,TF2 ,Nuts & Bolts,Bad Company (I never thought I could destroy a whole town with a power drill, nuh huh never) Little Big Planet and Fallout 3.
Of course if you got lost in the endless sea of rehashes and generic FPS this gen sucks but I say it sucks for the part that 3rd party games are scarce and rare.
Nowadays everyone waits for the next mainstream game, hypes the crap out of it and shuns every critic but the funny part is that the same exact people is going to say the game sucked just a month after its release. See GTAIV (Personally IV is my favorite GTA game for the storyline alone),a lot of people didn’t liked GTAIV serious face.
tmacairjordan87 @ Apr 15th 2009 3:46PM
Because SE has just been the benchmark for quality this gen amirite?

"Action" covers a multitude of sub-genres, let us hope it happens in line with that other time

Odd, still works for me after resetting my browser, oh well. It is supposed to be the Japanese box for the PlayStation game Einhänder.

tmacairjordan87 @ Apr 15th 2009 4:22PM
Ahh I remember einhander back in the day. I don't remember if it was a good game or not, I just remember being able to play as Cloud (pretty sure Seph was there too) and it was right after FF7 came out so I was excited.
tmacairjordan87 @ Apr 15th 2009 4:26PM
Ack damn nevermind. I'm thinking of that fighting game they did on the PS1 with the wierd name. I don't think I've ever played einhander though.

To be fair, most of the terrible games released by squeenix this gen have been through their subsidiaries...
*cough*Tri-Ace*cough*
Julian @ Apr 15th 2009 3:56PM
I agree with tmac, SE has been pretty bad with quality this gen, their games on the 360 have been decent at best, outside of money behind the screens I dun really see why SE has been loving the 360, sales and review wise it hasn't really been working for them on the platform
@the baldwin5, most people only felt the games have been decent at best, just look at the average review score & sales, none have been well received
OhJustSomeRandomGuy @ Apr 15th 2009 3:56PM
Come on, you guys. You can't even thank Siliconera by name? Spencer over there does more research by himself than pretty much all the other video game blogs put together, and you can't even reward the guy with a mention of his site's name in the story?
That's weak, man. Remember, if you don't give him any publicity, he's not going to be around to do all the work for you.
Donald @ Apr 15th 2009 5:19PM
It's called the "Source" link.
OhJustSomeRandomGuy @ Apr 15th 2009 6:48PM
That's not the same as naming the source in the article blurb.
tmacairjordan87 @ Apr 15th 2009 3:57PM
It has nothing to do with sony or MS. I was hating FF-13 before it was a multiplatform game. Besides, it's no secret square's a shell of its former self so why should anyone care anyway?
and no, I hate J-rpgs not rpgs in general. Please don't try to make it seem like that part of the gaming world revolves around them anymore, because it doesn't. Not by a long shot.
Manly Mcbeefigan (Mr. ESC) @ Apr 15th 2009 4:00PM
That name reminds me of Operation:Anchorage for some reason.
Manly Mcbeefigan (Mr. ESC) @ Apr 15th 2009 4:07PM
I've never played a SE game in the x360 due the horrible reviews but maybe someone could perhaps share some light, are those games that bad? For example Infinite Undiscovery?
All the games I've bought from SE lately are Ds ports of FF and Chrono Trigger.
Jinsenken @ Apr 15th 2009 4:08PM
Square Enix needs to stop fucking announcing new games and get crackin on Versus XIII! Haven't seen any news of that game in a while.
Professor Lario @ Apr 15th 2009 4:16PM
Please let it be an ARPG!!
more bad asser @ Apr 15th 2009 4:20PM
isn't squarenix known to be pretty weak with action/shooter games, and better at RPG's and their classic franchises?
Kenny Powers Fastball (PSN johnnynumber5) @ Apr 15th 2009 4:43PM
Yes which is why I belive they purchased Eidos. They wanted a western developer so they could make some western centric games as well.
The only games from them I remember like that are Durge Of Cerebrus & Bouncer.
Kenny Powers Fastball (PSN johnnynumber5) @ Apr 15th 2009 4:30PM
Don't feed the troll people. It's just another random sprinkles created account that will be banned before the sun goes down.
Just vote down & report and he/she will take care of him/herself as usual.
Boy oh boy did that FF 13 PS3 footage look gorgeous.
gmoya90 @ Apr 15th 2009 4:38PM
well there united with that tomb raider company but not sure if its etablished yet.
anyways maybe that new online game thay been talking about for some time now.
who knows
Kenny Powers Fastball (PSN johnnynumber5) @ Apr 15th 2009 4:38PM
Mr.Esc
From everything I've read and heard those games are really bad. I heard Star Ocean IV was a little better than Infinite Undiscovery & Last Remnant but not as good as the original Star Ocean games. So, if you want a good SE game this gen continue buying the DS & PSP games because thus far everything else has sucked. If you want good RPGs on the 360 go with Namco Bandai's Tales Of Vesperia & Eternal Sonata. Lost Odyssey & Blue Dragon are also both decent but nothing to write home about when compared to the aforementioned Namco Bandai titles. I believe there is also Tales Of Symphonia that recently released on The Wii & another one called Tales Of Graces that is coming out sometime this year for Wii.
I think all of SE good talent is working on finshing up the PS3 version of FF 13 and then the 360 port before going back to the grind on FF 13 VS. So, it explains why all of those games haven't been up to the standard that Square has been known for in the past.
Cerpin Taxt @ Apr 15th 2009 5:44PM
Did Square-Enix mean to say Vagrant Story?
mgsrocks1 @ Apr 15th 2009 5:47PM
I'm really hoping it's Kingdom Hearts 3 but I highly doubt it.
