And it didn't take me seven years to figure it out, I beat it in early 2002, forgot about it until 4 came out and read through the entire story but still haven't gotten to play 4. : (

I just finished the game and that was extremely confusing, and yet I loved it. However, the cheesy lines between Rose and Raiden got old VERY fast: why were they discussing their relationship status while Raiden was on a STEALTH mission?

BTW, DK is publishing the Halo encyclopedia: when are we going to get a Metal Gear Solid history book? That thing will span at least 20 hardbacks.

Hopefully they will completely rewrite the last third of the story and have it make some actual sense. All of that talking and nobody tells you what the hell is going on. I found it amusing but only because I find the absurd to be entertaining. Hopefully they will make a remake of MGS2 with all of the plot holes patched up and somebody explaining why the Colonel is an A.I. controlled entity. Did he get kidnapped? Just one of many questions but I hope that Hideo Kojima was cracking some sort of Japanese inside joke that I wouldn't understand. I've gotta say that MGS2 is still one of my favorite games though. The gameplay has got to be really good to make all of the "best of PS2" lists with a story that leaves you with high expectations but leaves you so confused that your head starts to hurt.

I'm sorry but I tire of people tearing down MGS2's story just because they don't get it.
I'll give you that it was convoluted and maybe even a bit too silly, depending on your point of view.. and while not entirely original it was still a work of genius and it isn't impossible to grasp it.

Kojima tied a lot of things to the story.. maybe not all of it was essential.. but the core theme of "MEME" was handled well. Some stuff has only gained relevance over time.. and in the past few years I've learned a lot more that I can use to go back and put the story in perspective.

When you look today at what the secret societies that have maintained power in our world have become over the past century it isn't hard to grasp some of the more obtuse sounding stuff like how the Patriots evolved out of information or why a system like GW would be conceived of.

Point is... is doesn't need rewriting. You may very well need some different education to appreciate it but that isn't the fault of the writing.

Oh, it is the fault of the writing. I'm all for obtuse symbolism, political allegory and epic storylines, and further, I am a huge MGS series fan.

However, MGS 2 has got to be one of the stupidest stories in a videogame ever. The villains are caricatures, the liquid-ocelot "arm taking over the body" thing was beyond retarded, and none of the characters were likable or relatable except Snake, who just maintained his awesomeness from the previous MGS.

As far as the Patriots and AI stuff, it was mildly interesting, but it was handled much better in MGS4. There is too much going against the story of MGS2 for me to ever fully accept it, even if it did have some interesting concepts.

No, no it wasn't.

MGS2 was the best in terms of story IMO. Unlike the other games, MGS2 had boss characters that actually tied into the story(psycho mantis was cool but wtf?, where the hell did he come from??) and probably had the greatest plot twist of the entire series (MGS 3 was the saddest). And the characters were all great... well maybe not rose. Fortune was a great character though.

I will agree that the idea of an arm taking over a persons body is a bit silly, but Liquid-Ocelot was still awesome. But If you considered this bad, I can't believe you put MGS4 above MGS2. whats more silly, an arm taking over a persons body, or a person acting like an arm has taken over his body to fool an AI?

I feel that the plot is just complicated to the point that it's frustrating for many, but it's by no means dumb.

Protip: It's really fucking complex.

I understand the references in the story and I know that they were working towards a good point but my only issue is being on topic and consistency. I am alot less bewildered by the story than most probably just because I hear the "underground news" and whatnot. But alot of people aren't that deep into all of the conspiracy theories to be able to place the references. If you lose most of the audience story-wise then there is more work to be done. I think that the story was rushed and then they threw way too many plot twists in to keep Raiden from ranting about his groove being violated by his girlfriend. I am not a game critic but I believe that my point is valid.

i'm going to have to agree with bastard11, it really wasn't that bad. I was going to write this long ass post in support but alas i am lazy and im sure people will see my icon and be like "OMGWTFBBQ FANBoi."

I thought MGS4 tied the story up together nicely, albeit when i beat it realized i just went through a little over 4 hours of gameplay and about 10 of cutscene/dialogue. I did recently try playing them in chronological order.
So this means:

MGS3: Snake Eater, Portable Ops, Metal Gear 1, Metal Gear 2, MGS, MGS2, MGS4.

and it was kind of fun seeing how well they paid attention to having everything consistent.

Obviously a matter of opinion but personally it was Snake eater. I suggest getting MGS3 Subsistence from somewhere. You get MGS3, MG1 & MG2

@wet dream man

That is a question which each fan boy will answer differently, but all will foam at the mouth to defend. The truth of the matter is that everybody who isn't a drooling retard knows MGS3 was the best.

MGS2's story was great. The biggest problem I see with this is that so much of it required it to be interactive.

First of all, how do you fill the gaps between the freezing of the various bombs? Very little happens, and yet you have to move Raiden around the structure. It works fine in gameplay terms, but from a storyline perspective it would be very boring. Yet you also don't want to cut that part of the story short-- I absolutely hated it the first time I played it, but after I saw how the Stillman/Fatman relationship tied into the ending, it made a lot more sense. If you lose that part of the game, annoying it as may be, you lose a big part of the message.

Secondly, avoiding spoilers for people that haven't read it, EVERYTHING concerning Raiden makes no sense in a non-interactive media. Especially the ending. As much as some people hate him, the story absolutely needs him (as well as his interaction with Rosemary and the Colonel) to work. At best, you could make it a "Choose your own adventure" book, I suppose, but even that would suffer from the fact that you'd have to have the reader choose every single action ("To shoot from behind the boxes, turn to page 200. To run around in circles, turn to page 22") in order to have the same impact. Although I must admit, a CYOA boss fight would be hilarious.

Or you could go for a third person novelization, like In the Darkness of Shadow Moses, perhaps from Snake's perspective. But that still wouldn't effectively translate the story-- it would be a supplemental, not a replacement.

The only way to make MGS2's story work is to either ignore the beef of it and just relate the events (the whole conspiracy element, while very intriguing, is not the moral of the story), or have it as a video game in some form or another.

I hear that somewhere in the story the colonel starts to tell you to close the book and put it down, and that you've been reading too many books...

Should be interesting - Benson was the one who most recently picked up from where Fleming dropped off on the Bond books - he did a good job with those - i hope he can spread some MGS goodness to us MGS virgins.

I have the first Metal Gear Solid novel by Raymond Benson and it is pretty well written and highly detailed. Their are even some details that aren't said in the game that are written in the prologues and epilogues to make the books fit in better.

This is bad news no matter what you think of the MGS2 story. The MGS1 novel was awful. They basically just copied the codec conversations and had Penny Arcade's L.H. Franzibald character write occasional filler.

Don't take my word for it and rob yourself of the experience, go down to Borders and flip through it for yourself.
