Adams Media Research has busted out the microscopes and attempted to get to the bottom of all this Blu-ray business, reports Blu-ray.com. In dissecting multiple discs (and perhaps a few of the people that purchased them last year), Adams Media Research has determined that Blu-ray sales for the first quarter of this year have been greater than those during the same period last year. Science!
Over 9 million Blu-rays were sold in Q1, crushing the 4.5 million sold last year. The research firm points to the sudden explosion in Blu-ray-enabled homes, which are now estimated to comprise 10.5 million households. The majority of these homes aren't just watching Blu-ray on their PS3s, either, as 75% (7-8 Million) own standalone Blu-ray players (twice as many as last year). With so many folks hopping on the Blu-ray train, maybe now we can finally get those American Ninja flicks on Blu-ray!

I don't even see what this has to do with Microsoft.
They went with HD-DVD because they were "obligated" since Toshiba is one of their close partners; both technologically and financially.
But hey! That's great to know, now we know that BluRay won't be phased out soon considering that I recently paid $300 for mine.

So is that an additional 10.5 million households with Blu-ray for Q1 or in total? I'm wondering this because I know the PS3 has sold more than 2-3 million.

I've read reports that blu-ray sales comprise 10% of total DVD sales now. Not too shabby for such a young format with expensive players.

That's because HD TV's and the like are all the rage now. No one wants to watch a movie, documentary, or some series in SD anymore. They want HD.
Thats why they bought a HD compatible TV.
Thus, which product is the most secure, reliable & available right now? - Blu-ray.
People are going crazy for everything HD.

I used to be so excited about bluray. Unfortunately I haven't watched one since the Netflix price hike. The ones I buy are few and far between because I try to only buy movies I really like and not just big budget popcorn movies.
