It's been a while since the PSP saw a real SOCOM game. Fireteam Bravo 2 released in 2006 and successfully delivered a 16-player online experience on-the-go. Fireteam Bravo 3 is being worked on by Slant Six, the same team behind the lackluster SOCOM Confrontation on PS3 and the sublime SOCOM Tactical Strike on PSP. The original SOCOM developers, Zipper Interactive, are undoubtedly too busy working on MAG to place their efforts on a handheld SOCOM.
New to Fireteam Bravo 3 will be the ability to play missions with other players. The story will take operatives on a quest to find ex-KGB agent Alexander Gozorov, believed to be holding information on an upcoming attack with WMDs. In addition to the campaign, players will also be able to compete online, communicate via voice chat, battle for medals and earn ranks on the online leaderboards. A teaser trailer for the game will be released tomorrow, so stay tuned.
[Thanks, Oizu!]

uh, the truth though is that the game is actually pretty good, hey, the same problems happened with Warhawk, and yet it still gets a hell lot of praise for how the game has turned out after the patches.
Other games have also suffered from a hell lot of technical problems, such as CoD 4, Gears 2, thing is they didn't get as much of a backlash because they had their single player part supporting them.
It is sad that people are still upset about launch problems, and most likely writting off the developer.

If Warhawk had the same problems as Confrontation, wouldn't their review scores be similar? After all both were MP-only games that had no SP to fall back on. Yet I'm looking at an 84 for Warhawk vs a 62 for Confrontation (based on Metacritic)...
As far as writing of the devs themselves... they've produced 2 of the lowest scored games in the Socom franchise.... Excuse me for not having any faith in them!

uh, not really, rarely titles are re-reviewed, Warhawk luckily was one of them. Not only that, but the multiple expansion packs have increased its critical acclaim.
Confrontation didn't get that, not only that, but because it lacked a single-player campaign as well, it was even more heavily criticized.
"they've produced 2 of the lowest scored games in the Socom franchise.... Excuse me for not having any faith in them!"
Sorry for the next to words but
FUCKING BULLSHIT
If you got a PSP, and are at least a tiny bit interested in strategy games, I mean, just a bit of interest is necessary, you will LOVE the game. That game was heavily underrated.

Instead of me pointing out what was "wrong", IGN did it for me. As you can see, the problems were all technical, not design ones, which are almost all gone.
The only one that was kind to wait was 1up, which did update the game, and guess what? it got a B+
And yes, Tactical Strike was a great game, apparently not your cup of tea, but great nonetheless. Don't underrate something simply because you don't like it.

Actually TS can't be compared to Valkyria Chronicals. To totally different kinds of strategy games. A more reasonable game to compare TS to would be Full Spectrum Warrior.

SOCOM: Confrontation is actually a really awesome game. Probably not as fun to play online as KZ2 but it's a more than competent competitive multiplayer experience. Not to mention it can also be acquired for a real cheap price. I think it fits somewhere inbetween Warhawk & Metal Gear Online in terms of it's quality and gameplay.
Tactical Strike is also one of my favorite PSP games to date but it does take a different type of person to understand it and enjoy it. It's certainly not a game for everyone.

It's true that Confrontation got a LOT better over time, but releasing a broken game at launch is not something we should commend. Yeah, I'm sure Slant Six was rushed to meet deadlines, but the first few weeks of the game left a lasting impression.

The truth does hurt. Being a fan of the other SOCOM's on the PS2, I didn't want to believe it either. But I took a deep breath and traded it back and got a good online game. Hopefully there will be another, only it will be much much better.

its hard to back up a developer and/or publisher who pushes and releases and unfinished product to the public.
for example- take 2 and rockstar could have done this with GTA4 and released a very buggy, unfinished pruduct, however they pushed back the release date once or twice and waited at least 6 additional months to release GTA4.
the gaming public greatly appreciated this, and there would have been a backlash if released early.
its hard to say if slant six did this, im sure they would have loved to make the game complete im sure its the publisher and/or sony (if not the publisher), wanting to release the game early.
it doesnt make sense for a developer to make a bad, buggy game, when the game is pretty much their job resume & portfolio.
but the truth is the game was released early and should not have been and the gaming public was mad because of it.
the game has suffered poor sales and will never bounce back from being released before it should have been.
i had very similar complaints with gears of war 2 MP, but i was at least able to play single player and horde mode with little or no problems.
with socom we were left with an unplayable game for some weeks.
what does a discounted socom game mean now to somebody who paid $ 40 or $ 60 full price at launch, only to have an unplayable game. it doesnt settle well in the stomach.

but that is great they have stood behind the product and patched it up.
and the funny thing is that the game should not have been released in October 2008 anyway, when at least 4 other AAA game titles were released.
this is 1 game that could have greatly benefited from being pushed back.
and to the person who said cod4 was broken at launch.. what version were you playing?
because the 360 version was fine and had little problems and was 1 of the greatest MP experiences for many online gamers since Counter Strike.
i do remember hearing about ps3 port issues and/or online connecting issues, but that would more be with sony and not activision.
just like the GTA4 ps3 online problems back then..

Tactical Strike was underated and a nice turn for the SOCOM series so hopefully Slant Six can make this title shine. Looks like another promising title for the PSP.

I'm far more confident in Slant Six's ability to make a good PSP game. The tech they used in Tactical Strike was amazing! Can't wait to see what that engine can pull off now.

Yes, I agree. SOCOM is a great series and I hope this game turns out good.
As for what Mr. ESC said, not all SOCOM games have been great. Tactical Strike was pretty good, but had its issues.

Before we start having numerous amounts of arguing about the quality of existing and future Socom titles, everyone needs to be truthful to themselves.
SOCOM: Confrontation was released too early. To say that it had the same level of problems that most/all multiplayer games usually go through is denial. Everything from the presentation of the game (how it installed, title menu, lobby, etc;) to the actual gameplay (the need for updates down the road for controls?) screamed incomplete.
However, after plenty of updates, the game has become much more stable, and most importantly, playable. Maybe not one of the best SOCOM games to date, as argued by long time fans, but it's a fun game.

I was wondering if they were going to release another one. If it ditches the "you-go-where-I-point-my-cursor" gameplay, I'm fine with it.

I enjoyed Socom: Fireteam Bravo 1 when I picked it up for $10.00 last year... I'd really like to get Socom: Fireteam Bravo 2 for cheap, it looks like it's a bit better.
So why not Socom: Fireteam Bravo 3? But I'm personally not such a fan of the franchise or genre that it'd be a day one purchase for me.

Let me just say that me and about 25 other people are really excited about this. Me and my ol' clan use to tear some SOCOM FTB1 & FTB2 up! Every night back in the day, we would take up about 2 rooms full of us! We had some great times, and for most it was the first time we had ever played a competitive online game.
Oh, and about the lock-on...for those who don't know, it doesn't just make the game automatically 'run and gun' just 'lock and shoot'. There is just some much more to it. You can still free-aim and get your head shots if you want for one.
I believe this game is even more tactical then it's console counterparts. Since you rely more on your strategy more than if you can put a cross hair over someones skull. It was more-so about positioning and steady movement. And it was more about the sound your enemy made in the grass or with his (or her---female avatars too) rifle. Everything was broken down to its simplest form, and that is what kept the game play tight and competitive...
Sorry guys for the long post lol....

Tactical Strike was a pretty good game. Personally, I feel Slant 6 should stick to PSP development, which they know best (kind of like what BigBig Studios and High Impact are doing). I'm excited for this.

was i the only one that thought 'year of the PSP' after reading this? we went from a full on drought to a year chock full of awesome releases. patapon 2 alone would have redeemed the psp for me, but LBP, rock band, prinny, loco roco 2, SOCOM FTB3, assassin's creed, and motorstorm really make it an awesome year.

I've got 2, it's cool, but I've not ever got too far into it. Just deleted my save file and started over, only finished one mission so far.
Not too sure if this is a genre game for me though, although I'll finish 2 before making that call and would certainly DL a demo of the game.

Still didn't like the lock-on + tank controls, even if u say it makes people rely more on tactics. There's no tactics involved in the Singleplayer portion. That makes this part a Third Person Clicker, which is worthless, and I don't believe in paying full price for just the hack-fest multiplayer. For me multiplayer just supplements the singleplayer experience, which is not the past FTB titles.

FTB2 took a a few steps backward I believe (see the ign.com review). Like for instance, bringing up weapons, you couldn't see their names, but you could see their stats, or something like that. I haven't ever finished yet. It wasn't bad or anything, it just felt "more of the same" as FTB1.
As for Confrontation, I'm hoping to try it this weekend finally. It has gotten killed in earlier reviews, but 1-up now gives it something in the ballpark of 80/100 (one of the few sites to re-review the title after the release fiasco).
We'll never know the true story, but has anybody ever thought that maybe Sony was the one applying pressure for that premature release date?
