The PlayStation Network is expected to go down for a few hours on April 21st, according to a notice on the European PlayStation forum. The "essential maintenance" will begin at 7AM BST (or 2AM EST). There's no indication this will be a global outage, but don't be surprised if your late-night gaming sessions get suddenly interrupted.
[Thanks, bob!]

I really like the article's picture for some reason.
What I don't understand is why almost everything associated with the PS3 from news sources to Sony themselves is advertised with colors OTHER than red? I mean the new 'PSN ID' cards are freaking light violet. Isn't the theme for the PS3 red and black?

Hey, everyone deserves to take a break on 4/20 including the dudes who manage the PlayStation Network. I'm sure they just want to play some 100% lag-free Killzone 2 online along with accompanying the sweet, sweet Mary Jane.

I wonder if they're putting in some new functionality. VoiP servers maybe? Please?

Riot! With so much FPS experience, if all the gamers in the world form an army, we'll be unstoppable! then we can overtake Sony and stop this PSN downtime...
And if nothing else, it'll give us something to do while we wait for the servers to get back up :)

God help you Sony if this interferes with my Fat Princess beta testing.

On a side note, what is Sony cooking up? If I remember correctly, the only times they have shut down PSN like this was to prepare the network for a major firmware update or the store redesign. Anyone have any ideas?

Who knows, a few hours of downtime could be anything from normal maintenance to feature adds. With Home getting some Star Trek love in Europe, it wouldn't surprise me if these are related...then again there's no way to know yet.

It's just maintenance. Also are you really enjoying Fat Princes beta? I've been playing it for a while now and I must say its getting old rather fast. It's cute and funny but idk, very shallow feeling. Maybe thats just because the beta is so bare or something. Idk, I just hope they have a lot more planned in terms of upgrades etc.. before release :/

@ Blkant
I am actually, granted I haven't gotten to play very much of it because I went out of town for the weekend, but I loved what I played and I'm pretty excited to sink my teeth into it more. As far as it getting old fast, I haven't played enough to know yet. Maybe you could try a different class or something and see if you like that better. If you wanna play together sometime my PSN ID is bleg38. I don't know of any friends that have the beta and the company of a fellow 'stiqer would be welcome.
PS- how many people were using voice chat while you were playing?

It down to Home!
Lets explain at moment if Sony wants to ban you for bad behaver they ban you on PSN. That means you are not able to play on PSN. It been a bug bare for lot people behind the service of Home this. They would like to be able to ban just from Home and reserving banning PSN very serious offences like be crazy and owning a Wii in home and thinking Mii is better.
To do this they need to make some changes to back end of there user database.
So it will be world wide then.

Well, I'm not one to join in on wild rumor/assumption hunts, but as someone already stated, these maintenance periods usually precede firmware upgrades, and the 21st is on a Tuesday. We'll see.

I am so mad! I pay good money for this network service and the least they can do is keep it running! I want a refund on this day when it happens! First my system crashes now this! Oh wait... Sorry i thought this was for the xbox. Don't start a war over this, we need to be able to laugh at these things.

Brilliant it's in the morning in GMT time too, around 8AM, I expect not much people to be online then, except for mental people.
Even though it's on my off day from Uni.
