Unfortunately, we've got a fairly strict policy against lengthy headlines -- otherwise, we would have given this post the title it properly deserves: "German ratings board Unterhaltungssoftware Selbstkontrolle (USK) tries to rate Guitar Hero: Van Halen, finds music therein to be far too awesome, spontaneously explodes." Try fitting that into an RSS feed.
Yes, the USK recently reported that it has rated the rumored rhythm title, which it actually calls Guitar Hero headlining Van Halen, for the PS3 and 360. If this rating guarantees the title's existence, we can't wait to hear absolutely everything about the game before Activision decides to formally announce it six months from now.

If Activision were allowing these discs to be exported to the hard drive to play in World Tour, it would be a masterful strategy for catching up to the library on offer in the Rock Band store, which continues to gallop along typically putting out double what World Tour releases as DLC any given week. Releasing huge chunks of one bands content to large-scale advertisements is surely a better way of letting people know what you've got than quietly pumping out classic albums online like Rock Band is.
But instead, all it will do in the long term is kill online play by spreading the player base across a bunch of standalone titles, and by focusing on bands that were crazy talented at shredding and double bass pounding and making a racket, it dilutes the interest of the party crowd, which mainly seems drawn to a good singalong - anthems, harmonising, teenage favourites. I could be wrong - has anyone had a Guitar Hero: Metallica party yet? How'd it go?

Is it safe to say that Activision has surpassed EA in franchise whoring?

You're right, but unfortunately we have no one to blame but ourselves unless we can convert our disgust into a decision to not purchase their shitty products. I haven't bought any Guitar Hero since 3. Not counting the DS game(s), that's three titles. Yet I keep seeing commenters here saying something along the lines of "God I'm so sick of this franchise milking, but I think I'm gonna have to get this one!" If a strategy is working in the short-term, you can't really blame them for cashing in, like a ..big, bloated cancer.

I'd have rather seen a Van Halen track pack. I don't care if they release seprate games, but think about the future.. Guitar Hero 5 won't have any Metallica, probably no Aerosmith or now Van Halen.
(I'd kill for a Guitar Hero: The Eagles or more track packs)

I think Variety is what made the GH/RB games interesting. Besides for the beatles game which I will be picking up, I like a nice mix of genres..
