Sony: Survey not a guarantee of Blu-ray release of PS2 God of War games
Based on the 220 comments which materialized on last week's post about a survey which hinted at the possibility of Blu-ray re-releases of the first two God of War games on the God of War III collector's edition, we're guessing there's a fair amount of interest in seeing a revival of these two classic god-murdering sims. However, Sony representatives recently made a statement that will likely send your hopes crashing to the ground faster than a brutally de-winged Icarus.
Speaking to Kotaku, SCEA representatives attempted to lower the expectations of their fanbase, stating, "It is simply a marketing survey. The goal of it is to do focus group testing." They added, "if that was the number one requested thing, that would be something they would need to see if that was most technically feasible," but explained that they've yet to see God of War II run off of a Blu-ray disc. We sure hope they figure it out -- we're already drowning in collectible keychains and statuettes over here.

That is why it was a survey
flarkle @ Apr 19th 2009 4:20PM
The problem is that most people take any word on anything as absolute fact and will definitely happen no matter what, and if it doesn't happen people cry endlessly and call companies liars and boycott games just because of something as silly as a survey.
I'm glad they came out and made this clarification, even though it was totally unnecessary to people with half a brain. It probably saved us tons of time responding to people crying about it.

Sony: "Hey guys, do you think we should put GoW 1 & 2 on the Blurays or something else?"
Everyone: "GoW on Blurays! GoW on Blurays!"
Sony: .......Nah.
Hyams @ Apr 19th 2009 1:06PM
Surely it can't be *that* hard to port a last gen game onto the PS3?
DavidGC @ Apr 19th 2009 1:10PM
They did it with Godfather II...
Hashbrown Hunter @ Apr 19th 2009 1:53PM
EA just got zinged. Zinged hard.
MaliceMajorE15 @ Apr 19th 2009 2:03PM
you have got to remember that it aint so simple. for example the read speed of a blu-ray is slower than a dvd
Popfrogs @ Apr 19th 2009 2:12PM
They also did it with Disgaea 3.
Sir Buzz Killington( The Artist formerly known as Jakka) @ Apr 19th 2009 2:21PM
@ Malice
Yes and No. The speed is same, but on the other hand a 50GB disc won't have the same processing capabilities etc. compared to a smaller more optimized 9GB disc if both are running at a standard DVD speed.
That's a different story however and as far as you're concerned there should be nothing to really stop them, PS2-Game-On-Blu-Ray-Compatibility-wise.
master811 @ Apr 19th 2009 2:44PM
@Malice, that's not entirely true in this case.
Although the fastest DVD drives have read speeds far greater than the PS3's blu-ray reading ability, the PS2's DVD drive doesn't (as it is only 4x DVD which means an actual DVD data read of just over 5MB/s).
The PS3's 2x Blu-ray drive however can read blu-rays at nearly double that of 9MB/s), which means it is more than enough to play PS2 games.
Tiptup300 @ Apr 19th 2009 2:54PM
DVD's have variable speeds, meaning it's highest speed is bigger then blu-ray and it's slowest is slower then blu-ray.
Blu-ray is a static speed.
So blu-ray is slower, but not slower then the useless stuff on the disc.
why not the LS2LS7? @ Apr 19th 2009 4:18PM
Tiptup300:
The information you give is specific to 360 and PS3. There's no reason you can't have a CAV (constant rotational speed) DVD drive or a CLV (variable rotational speed, near constant linear speed) Blu-ray drive.
playwhutyalike @ Apr 19th 2009 1:06PM
I dig this idea. A company listening to ideas from die hard fans. I can't wait to see how this plays out.
tmontana213 @ Apr 19th 2009 1:15PM
I hope they're able to do it. I've been wanting to play my copy of God of War II but my PS2 crapped out on me. I really don't want to buy another one, even if it is only $99 now.
Jae Hova @ Apr 20th 2009 7:51AM
IDK why Sony even bothers talking to Kotaku.
Hydrophobicfish @ Apr 19th 2009 1:20PM
:(
Pleeeeeeeeeease?
JuanDHexen @ Apr 19th 2009 1:24PM
If it was in the survey than it had to be a possibility from the start. They weren't going to put something random that couldn't be done like a sofa or a painting in the CE.
Inect @ Apr 19th 2009 2:08PM
They don't do that, FUCK were am i going to sit now.
j.howlett @ Apr 19th 2009 1:25PM
i think they'll have a pure software solution eventually.
Hyams @ Apr 19th 2009 3:18PM
Doubt it. The PS3 just isn't powerful enough.
SoulBlade @ Apr 19th 2009 3:37PM
hyams - doesn't the 80 gig do emulation via software for some games? regardless, the ps3 is a pretty powerful machine - if they code an emulator, you better believe sony knows how to use the hardware to write a good one.
Xeones25 @ Apr 19th 2009 3:47PM
Yes, the original 80 GB is entirely software emulation that is why a few PS2 games don't run well on it.
Hyams @ Apr 19th 2009 4:14PM
No, the old 80GBs and EU 60GBs are half software and half hardware.
Current PS3s can't play any PS2 games because they don't have the hardware part in them anymore.
To pull off *pure* software emulation, you'll need far more power than the PS3 has available.
This isn't a knock on the PS3 or anything, it's just that emulating hardware with only software requires a shit load of power.
benny boy @ Apr 19th 2009 4:46PM
I'm pretty sure that the launch 60GB in NA had some hardware for it but the EU 60GB and the older 20GB and 80GB did it without the BC hardware and did something software-based instead. Correct me if I'm wrong.
j.howlett @ Apr 19th 2009 5:17PM
i don't think it'll work for every game, but some. every ps3 with ps2 BC has some hardware to help it. the ps1 is compatibility is in every ps3 software wise and even some of those have a problem or two.
Vidikron @ Apr 19th 2009 6:13PM
@Hyams
I wouldn't count out emulation completely. Afterall the 360 emulates XBox games. The hurdle is certainly larger I'd imagine... with trying to emulare the rather complex Emotion Engine on another complex system that is the PS3's hardware, but since Sony owns the EE the hurdle is somewhat reduced.
EGOvoruhk @ Apr 19th 2009 6:26PM
The PS3 is plenty powerful enough for pure software emulation, the problem is, Sony wont invest in creating it
Noshino @ Apr 19th 2009 1:26PM
Funny thing is that the answer by the representative implies that GoW 1 could be already working on a Blu-Ray....
Ezio Auditore de Firenze (PSN slycooper_rocker) @ Apr 19th 2009 2:23PM

Hashbrown Hunter @ Apr 20th 2009 12:30PM
Indeed, old chap!
Bill @ Apr 19th 2009 1:29PM
I would rather them create a re-release of the two games but in HD. There is nothing worse than playing old games on a HD-TV when you are used to HD-gaming. I would rather wait another year for a HD God of War I and II on a same bluray disk.
why not the LS2LS7? @ Apr 19th 2009 1:30PM
Are you kidding?
Old games do not get worse just because newer games have better graphics.
Come to think of it, I'm going to play Rallisport Challenge 2 again right now.
Mindkiller @ Apr 19th 2009 1:46PM
GoW2 looks incredible on my HD telly with PS3's upscaling option.
I myself havent been desensitised by all this HD gaming yet. GoW2 looks pretty damn close to high definition games to me anyway
Ezio Auditore de Firenze (PSN slycooper_rocker) @ Apr 19th 2009 2:24PM
hell, even me, a graphics whore, likes to play final fantasy VII at least once a week.
The Dark Wayne @ Apr 19th 2009 2:54PM
ive beaten KOTOR 13 times, most of them on an HD, including yesterday. The graphics arent what keep me coming back, it's the gameplay, the story and everything else. I couldnt care less about graphics if the game is great.
Chris D.(PSN: Aggie_CEO | XBL:The Aggie CEO | Steam: Aggie_CEO @ Apr 19th 2009 3:21PM
Ummmm Da fuck are you talking about??
God of War 2 looks BETTER than some PS3 & 360 games AS IS!!
Feba @ Apr 19th 2009 5:17PM
To you guys, and to the guy below mentioning chains of olympus, you do know it would be possible to simply pump up the resolution, without improving things like textures and models, right?
Sure, it's not going to look like a native PS3 game, but it would still look VERY fine, and more than justify purchasing the collector's edition or whatever. For an idea of how this would look, look into emulation-- the most obvious example I can think of being Metal Gear Solid for Bleem!cast.
PR0F3TA @ Apr 19th 2009 5:30PM
just last week i re-played Shadow of the Colossus. This week i'm running thru Indigo Prophecy.
HD remix's are for Arcade/SNES games, and even that sometimes wont make it better. Don't let HD ruin what are good games.
boots555 @ Apr 19th 2009 1:30PM
I want all 3 on one blu-ray disc. That would be the best special edition ever! Please make it happen Sony.
mirage @ Apr 19th 2009 1:32PM
I hope that they do figure this out. More collector's editions need to have playable content. Who really gives a #@*& about soundtracks and making of dvd's? Including the the first two games as playable would make this a must own. Not very many CE's are with the extra money.
Unknown @ Apr 19th 2009 1:34PM
It looks bad on their part, I understand its just a survey.
But if Sony releases anything less than the two games of BD for CE, then they set their audience up for disappointment.
If it wasn't technologically possible at the time the survey was created, why did they add it in the first place?

Yeah Sprinkles because it's so obvious until this survey was released that you were going to buy a PS3. I don't know who you think your fooling with all that BS but it's not anyone other than yourself. Besides, you *allegedly* already got a PS3 for Christmas that you *allegedly* sold.
