I notice that nobody realizes Feargus Urquhart, Chris Avellone and Chris Parker, the executives of Obsidian were the top people at Black Isle, who in turn made Fallout 1 and 2.

The news that Fallout is going back to the original creators is not only not reported in the article, but also spawns replies such as "where brotherhood expansion"?

Am I the only one that realizes the significance of this announcment? Every media outlet is reporting on Obsidian being the creator of KOTOR 2 and Alpha Protocol.

Shouldn't you mention that Obsidian is held by the people who made Fallout 1 and 2?

Doesn't that seem a bit important?

Uh, sure...that's important. And cool. And so forth.

But Broken Steel was supposed to be out at the end of April 2009...it's almost the end of April 2009 and we haven't heard a word about it in at least a month.

But that is a Bethesda issue on the development side. It has nothing to do with Obsidian or this true Fallout 3, if we're gonna call it that, because Fallout 1 and 2 were made by Black Sile/Obsidian.

This news is basically a confirmation of a true Fallout 3. And almost nobody seems to realize it.

Weird.

No its not a confirmation of a true fallout 3. I'm gonna guess its just the same thing that Fallout 3 is, just a new setting and just as big as Fallout 3.

Plus its on consoles, which would control like ass for the original fallout games.

And Fallout 3 was a true sequel, stop being a fanboy about this "Its not a real sequel!" thing. Go back to NMA.

@Demon

No, Fallout 3 was a re-telling from the start, in another area. It was a very faithful re-telling, but a re-telling non the less. They did the same thing, they didn't move the story forward. It was back to Enclave, back to a place needing help, etc. The same tried and tested formula, in a new engine and a new perspective.

And I liked it very much, put 50 hours into it.

But using logic, the true creators of Fallout 1 and 2 would probably, if they got their hands on THEIR OWN property again (after interplay has been sitting on them for so long) make a true type of a sequel to their own original previous work.

Also, fuck you too.

Well even if it is developed by Obsidian, certain key figures like Tim Cain, Leonard Boyarsky and Christopher Taylor are missing.

@Dove, the devs you listed were primarily concerned with Fallout 2, not one, but it's still awesome to see some of the folks from the old Black Isle days involved in the Fallout universe.

More exciting to me, most of these guys had a hand in Planescape: Tormet, which still might be my favorite RPG of all time (it's either that or the original Fallout).

Fallout 3 lacked a lot to be considered a Fallout game for me. Good 3D translation for sure, that's not the problem... it was the lack of crude or any humor :/

That was my biggest issue really. That and we could have used a... I dunno a soundtrack. Some theme music or atleast some traveling music to make the trip across the wasteland a little less dreary. Yes yes I know we had a radio but listening to the same song over and over gets mind numbing whereas good "traveling music" in the background doesn't.

Oh sure, I wasn't denying that the Troika developers are missing, but three out of six is still better than zero out of six. Especially since Troika is no longer active and has long been defunct.

It's far too early to know what the game will be about or how good the game will be, but it certainly is good news no matter how you turn it, that the old property holders are getting their franchise back.

Bethesda in this case only seems to be filling Interplay's - publishers role, since they have their own Fallout game development in their own studio.

Sounds just fantastic to me, that Bethesda would strike such a deal with the true origin creators (no matter how many may be lacking). I know for example, Freespace, another property that fuckwad Harve Caen (Interplay) is holding, that Volition has first rights of refusal or acceptance for a sequel, but for Bethesda to buy it and then honor the deal is pretty great, even after they've released their own very good Fallout game.

It's just a day today in which everyone wins.

No... its not going to be more of the TBS strategy. Its already been said they're using the Fallout 3 Graphcis engine and tool sets. They're making a new game the same way.

And fuck you back? I dont know where that came from.

Yep, they took note from Bungie and their ODST game.. cept without really changing anything...

I hope we have a damn score this time and perhaps some decent animations. Otherwise no reason to buy it. They can't keep blaiming it on the engine either because Warhammer Online (an MMO built on the same engine) has far better animations.

all 4 DLC packs are coming to PS3 by october - stop crying because you bought a PS3 without thinking about content available you losers. Hands down - the PS3 is a better machine than the 360 - but the PS3 fails when it comes to available content and Sony cant afford to get the exclusive licenses for DLC. And Sony failed again with a piss poor network for online gaming. Sorry - it's the truth

NWN2 MotB was a terrific expansion, though. Remember, NWN1 was pretty crap until the expansions came along.

Also, I thought KOTOR2 was way better than KOTOR1 (excluding the bugs and nonsensical ending).

I thought KOTOR 2 was pretty good. Obviously not as good as the original, but good nonetheless. Can a brother get a Star Wars game that doesn't take place on the same 4 planets every time?

You'd think with an entire galaxy to work with, they could come up with something new. If I have to go to Tattooine to fight Tusken Raiders one more time, I'm going to explode.

I read this at hellforge.gameriot.com (not sure if it's credible)

"The new game is slated for release in 2010 for the Playstation 3, Xbox 360 and PC.

Hines revealed that it will not be a sequel to Fallout 3 but rather another RPG set in the Fallout universe. He went on to further state that the game will be in a similar vein to the previous Fallout games, rather than a spinoff of any sort.

'We approached Obsidian and they were, like, yeah. That was a pretty easy conversation. It's not Fallout Tactics, it's not Brotherhood of Steel; it's another RPG.'

Hines added finally that the new game will have no bearing whatsoever on the game in development by Todd Howard and his team. Whether that game is Fallout 4 or The Elder Scrolls 5 remains to be seen. "

It's not 1950's Vegas, in the Fallout series the regular world goes until 2077, it's just that the history is different starting from the 1950s.
It will be 2077 vegas influenced by 1950's culture.

people who didn't like KOTOR 2 didn't play it enough. I admit, I too thought it was merely a sloppy cash in sequel, but the more I played it the more I appreciated it. Aside from the ending, which come on, that was the publishers greed not Obsidians fault, it improved on KOTOR 1 in every way. The characters were more developed, the writing was better, the influence system was a phenomenal leap, and it had an exceptional and a very mature story, not to mention nice touches like better animations and more voice actors.

What?
This is going to be on the PS3?

I hope it's better than the crappy little quests they've been adding so far; more like Shivering Isles.

So why id this not a 360 exclusive? Can MS not shovel them loads of cash in this kind of economy to keep further expansions exclusive.

And what about GTA and Burnout? Are they going to keep polishing their respective turds with DLC indefinitely, or are they eventually going to announce a new game? Fallout 3 came out in the Fall and the next (or what appears to be a significant expansion) is already announced, GTA4 and Burnout Paradise came out over a year ago.

New Vegas will play like bethesdas version, but expect some subtle differences in the fact that some key developers from fallout 1 and 2 are involved in its conception and creation, Bethesda asked obsidian if "they would like" to create the newest fallout game, they are pretty much giving obsidian free reign, while still being very much like fallout 3
