Matthew Perry suffers Fallout 3-related injury, not radiation poisoning
Poor Matthew Perry. First, he gets trotted out on ABC's The View to promote the new movie 17 Again where he plays an old version of teen star Zach Efron. Second, he gets poked and prodded by the various deleterious hosts of the show. And finally, he gets quickly ushered offstage after admitting to playing so much Fallout 3 that he needed to see a doctor for his hands.
As you'll see in the clip after the break, Perry quickly deflects the usual uninformed jibber jabber of View co-host Elisabeth Hasselbeck, telling her, "This is something you know nothing about," and, managing to navigate the rest of the co-hostesses giggling, explains the hand pain he recently endured from hours spent patrolling the Capital Wasteland. Though Perry's latest film looks less like our cup of tea and more like a 'made for TV' movie, he just jumped up a few cool points in our books.

Whoopee was never cool, and in fact, has always totally sucked.
DeepFriedSushi @ Apr 21st 2009 3:12PM
HAHA, i just remembered if you used to watch friends there was an episode where matthew perry's character played pacman so much his hands were frozen in a claw shape. anyone else realize this coincidence.
delete3 @ Apr 20th 2009 10:52PM
He jumped a few cool points in my books too. :)
I don't get the injections crap though. He must've been playing a TON
incubeezer @ Apr 20th 2009 10:54PM
Or he's just really rich and can afford to get injections at the slightest sign of discomfort.
WiredKnight @ Apr 20th 2009 11:07PM
Stimpacks, man. Stimpacks.
Van Faulk @ Apr 20th 2009 11:29PM
well the man is missing part of his hand. that might have something to do with it.
GoldN @ Apr 20th 2009 11:38PM
@Van Faulk
I didn't know about that till you mentioned it but I looked into it and "Matthew is missing part of his middle finger on his right hand." That doesn't seem like quite enough to result in an injury that requires medical attention. It may be a slight inconvenience because he might have to use his right index finger for both the right bumper and the right trigger, but other than that his missing middle finger shouldn't have a big affect.

It's enough to get carpal tunnel way faster if got less grip overall to work with. I don't know about you, but I grip my joystick like it owes me money.
And I hang onto controllers pretty tightly, too.
mr mobius @ Apr 20th 2009 11:51PM
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome can result from swelling in the wrist (Carpal tunnel) caused by irritation due to tendons rubbing back and forth against the flexor retinaculum in that area (when you open and close your fingers a lot such as long bouts of gaming), causing inflammation, and this then squeezes the median nerve, causing pain. The injections were anti-inflammatories administered to the site of inflammation for quicker action.
Chilly P @ Apr 21st 2009 1:25AM
Yeah, he talked about it on Jimmy Fallon, too, but the results were much funnier and pro-gaming.

MrKlorox @ Apr 21st 2009 2:13AM
I have a feeling it wasn't carpel tunnel, but rather a tendon issue such as "trigger finger". My mother had an accident resulting in trigger thumb on both of her hands. She needed steroid shots to relax the tendon sheath (synovial tube) so she could move her thumb freely again. It wasn't permanent and she had to eventually get surgery. Now her middle and ring fingers sometimes lock in the bent position until the moves them with her other hand.
To sum it up: hand injuries can cause other problems in places you wouldn't quite expect (see thumb injury resulting in locked fingers). I couldn't imagine not being able to use my thumbs for weeks at a time.

"It may be a slight inconvenience because he might have to use his right index finger for both the right bumper and the right trigger,"
Wait, there people who DON'T do that?
Joe @ Apr 21st 2009 8:00AM
@Gehodra: My thoughts exactly. I've never heard of people using two fingers for both the right trigger and bumper. That just seems awkward to me.
Qwirk @ Apr 21st 2009 10:52AM
I'm about a year younger than him and am an avid gamer as well. My longest sessions are about six hours by the end of which my hands may start cramping up. Fallout 3 is a HUGE world where I'm still finding new places to explore after three runs through the game. I'm thinking he is playing around 8-12 hours a day.
HighFiveJesus @ Apr 20th 2009 10:54PM
Matt, what were you thinking when you signed on to be in this movie???
i hope the answer is "i need money" because otherwise, damn man. damn.
aj @ Apr 21st 2009 12:29AM
Are you aware of Mr. Perry's entire career?
Marlin Brando he is not.
jobknockey @ Apr 21st 2009 1:16AM
Marlin Brando? The guy that played the Codfather?
H Choi @ Apr 21st 2009 1:15AM
Matthew Perry was making a million per episode during the last few years of Friends so I doubt he needs the money. The only other answer I can think of is "I'm sittilng on this pile of money and all I'm doing is playing video games".
Popfrogs @ Apr 21st 2009 1:35AM
Hahah, jobknockey wins the thread.
Doug @ Apr 20th 2009 10:54PM
I now like Matthew Perry. YAY
Joe @ Apr 21st 2009 8:02AM
Matthew was the only cast member of Friends I could still tolerate after 10 seasons.
jumpshot @ Apr 21st 2009 10:44AM
I could also tolerate Jennifer Anniston, but it wasnt anything she would say, so much as it always seemed cold on the set.
aacman007 @ Apr 20th 2009 10:58PM
Oh yeah? Well, I got injections in my brain to take in more of F3's awesome.
MystileArmor @ Apr 21st 2009 12:35AM
I have a feeling you get injections in your brain for various other reasons.
Discotheque @ Apr 20th 2009 11:02PM
Bleuck. Matthew Perry. Friends sucked. Also luckily Whoopi stopped that conversation before it became....really awkward.
MystileArmor @ Apr 20th 2009 11:14PM
Pfffffttt if you masturbate more your hand gets stronger so you don't need any injections from playing too many video games...
*crickets chirping*

He's known for his addictive personality (he's had pain killer and alcohol addictions in the past), and I'd say this is one of the better things he could be doing way too much of. =P
