Nintendo isn't afraid of low sales numbers for the M-rated DS outing of the GTA series, GTA: Chinatown Wars. In fact, the company believes the game will have "long legs" -- continuing to sell for the months to come rather than the usual cycle of big launch and steady decline. Speaking with MTV Multiplayer last week, Nintendo vice president of licensing Steve Singer said, "Chinatown Wars is performing in line with AAA titles that have come to our platform like Spore [Creatures] or Lego Star Wars."
And the sales numbers of those titles seem corroborate his point. Spore Creatures has sold nearly one million units worldwide at this point and Lego Star Wars: The Complete Saga has moved just over two and a half million, though each title sold less than half of Chinatown's numbers in their first two weeks at retail (released March 17, the March NPD numbers only recorded the first two weeks of the games sales). We're not sure what the future holds for the critically lauded title but Singer believes "word of mouth" will help to keep GTA: Chinatown Wars steady in the future. We'll certainly see after April's NPD numbers arrive in a few weeks.

I'm betting that all those people still trying to get the "Wanted" trophy/achievement for GTA4 will run out and get this when they finally get rank 10 and the platinum trophy.
I know I'm one of them!

DS gamers under 12's moms won't buy the game for them, and the DS gamers over 16 have already pirated it.
It's not gonna do too well.

Mario Kart and NSMB are still selling reasonably well a long time after sale, as far as I know.

That's because everyone and their mom, literally, can play those games and have fun. My friends' 4-year old has his own DS and both of those games. I don't think they'll be picking up GTA for him anytime soon....

M rating or not I just didnt like this game. I was a fan of the original GTAs back in the day but this version has limitations that just dont let this game work the same. I think that ultimately, that is the reason of the low sales.

GameStop’s pushing sales for Chinatown Wars with a contest to win a “mob boss experience” on their site, www.gamestopchinatown.com
Airfare for 4 to New York, private limo, hotel, model entourage, bodyguard and $5000 in cash. It’d be a pretty sweet deal, especially in this recession. Free to enter, so go do it!

I don't think Take Two has to be too worried about this one. 100k sales in the US for the first few weeks isn't bad, especially if you look at the long tale big DS games often have. If someone looked at the sales for any of the also dark/violent Castlevania games on the platform in the first few weeks, I'm sure they could make a claim at dismal sales. However, all of those games have been highly profitable and spawned sequels.
I expect Chinatown Wars A.) has a much lower budget then the PSP or console GTA titles, B.) will see a longer sales tail then some might expect, and C.) will sell fairly well and Europe and be a profitable title even if it doesn't break the double-platinum mark.
As for the comments above posters have made about the Wii and Nintendo's statement about their games having long tales, you need only look at the developers who've "tried on Wii to see thrid party successes. Japanese developers from Sega to Hudson to Bandai, and a lesser extent Capcom, and Western developers from EA to Activision to Ubisoft have all seen profits on multiple Wii entries and had multi-million sellers -- EVEN when they had slow first month sales. Just some food for thought.

These people act like the games vanish from Earth after week 1. As if in their minds, the game disappears and nobody can buy it a month from now. Look how long games like Mario Kart DS and Burnout Paradise sell. We gamers have 24 hour days just like everyone else and don't want to always run out and buy the newest game on day 1. Let us finish what we're playing now and eventually we'll get to picking up your title in which you STILL receive the money for it.
It's dumb ass people who care about these articles that are convinced LittleBigPlanet was a "failure". Get the F out of here.

Portable games seem to have much longer legs. I don't know why.. i guess cos they don't focus on graphics so much?
I often pick up random old portable games.

You people conveniently forget that this game comes from a different platform.
Not everyone plays Xbox 360/Xbox/PS2 etc. games, some of us have only bought Nintendo, and we suffered stubbornly through the gamecube years, and revel in the sucess of the DS & Wii.
I don't care about GTA and I will never buy it. Somehow beating up hookers is not my idea of fun. Also, I'm NOT a pretend gangster.
I believe everyone who will buy the game has already done so. In fact, there will be games returned to the manufacturer IMO in the coming months.
This is NOT Pokemon, it will have no legs. GTA is already getting free sales on bundled DSi packages, inflating it's sales.
DS owners are NOT sheep, like Xbox 360 owners - we don't buy stuff just because of online reviews (ad revenue biased reviews).
Peace.
