We thought about coming up with a better headline for this post, but given our recent hands-on time with Terminator Salvation, we thought we'd let the video speak for itself. The above video is comprised solely of gameplay footage from Grin's upcoming John Connor simulator, replete with plenty of gun shootin', grenade throwin', cover grabbin' action.
While we'll have to wait until next month to pass judgment on the final game, the action certainly looks decent. At the very least, the video does confirm one thing: They definitely got the music right, so that's a plus.
I just hope our main protagonists' jeans are replaceable. With all that sliding around into cover, it's gotta wear through to the bone eventually. Someone will do a webcomic showing John Conners legs with no meat left on them.
Oh, c'mon now. There's plenty of reasons those terminators are missing so blatantly. 2-ton gun recoil, invisible magnets, slight breeze, God, Leonard Nimoy... it's not like they're hard-wired titanium-solid precision soldiers of death.
Nah look how barely functional the AI was in Terminator (the first one) and this is before that, I think that this is the only game out there that has a real feasible excuse for clunky AI.
@chililili - I agree to a certain extent... they are crappy shots unless they have their human skin covering them. Then they're pretty damn accurate. Enough at least to wipe out half a police department. It'll be interesting to see how they fare in the game.
RE5 dev team was said to be "big fans of Gears of War" too. Which led to them looking into a similar control option. Just using Rstick and Rtrigger to aim and shoot doesn't cover it, RE5 dev team!
Wow, I'm pleasantly surprised, same as i was with Wolverine, same as I was with Batman: Arkhym Asylum. Are games with movie tie-ins just getting better?
Just because this game has a cover system does not mean it will be good. And if Wolverine doesn't have a combat system that rivals Ninja Gaiden, then it may also suck. So, it remains to be seen whether these movie games break the tradition. After all, the reason most movie games suck is because they're pushed to release to coincide with the movie.
What exactly do you mean by 'rival'? Do you mean it has to be like Ninja Gaiden's system to be good? Or are you just saying that it has to be good in order to not suck?
I clicked on the recent hands-on time link before I watched the video because I didn't read it before. You really bashed the game. After watching the video, I'm interested in the game. Did the demo you played not look and play like the video?
Yeah, what's up with that? I'd understand if they were using futuristic lasers or something, but those looked and sounded like bullet-spewing machine guns. I'd almost prefer a game in which there are few terminators that are just d@mn near indestructable, and you spend the whole game figuring out how to take them down while being constantly hunted. You know.... like the movies.
The animations used to roll into and out of cover look really slick! I'm actually optimistically looking forward to this game!
With all of the comparisons to GoW due to the similar cover system, I have to say it's disappointing that there will be no online co-op mode (only local)... Hopefully it still turns out as well as I'm hoping!
I guess we don't have a lot of information on what the trailer was running on, but I thought the framerate looked awesome, I didn't see any stuttering and it looked super smooth. :)
While I agree with the others that said the cover system and gameplay looks a bit like Gears, this looks surprisingly good for a game based on a movie.

You'd think robots would have better aim than that. Remember RoboCop?

I remember Robocop vs Terminator for the SNES. They were damn good shots back then.

If they had Robocop's accuracy, the game would last 3 seconds :P
No fun.
James @ Apr 20th 2009 8:21PM
Wow, this does look decent. Fun actually!
@nikescar - LOL
Foetoid @ Apr 20th 2009 9:13PM
This game is 360-purchase-worthy. I'm due to get one for Fable 2, FFXIII, DMC4 and RE5 anyway, now this game too. Need....more.......monies :(
Hace @ Apr 20th 2009 8:26PM
Good to know that the KillSwitch cover system still isn't being overused or anything. No sirree
Vidikron @ Apr 20th 2009 8:27PM
Come on though... how many ways can you really do cover?
DBuck_Eye @ Apr 20th 2009 8:46PM
The cool way. You know, where you position your character behind cover using the analog stick and the crouch button. I thought that way worked well.
Arttemis @ Apr 20th 2009 9:07PM
@DBuck_Eye - There's no need ignore progress made in the 3rd-person-shooter genre and take steps backwards.
An improvement would be to perhaps create the transition between standing/covered more seemless, and adding functionality while you're using cover.
ryan @ Apr 21st 2009 12:51AM
+1 for the sarcasm Dbuck!
TravisO @ Apr 20th 2009 8:31PM
I'm liking it, but the Gears of War style gameplay has me worried if it's well executed, we all remember what happened in Resident Evil 5, right?
Jason Statham (Aka Vegeta) @ Apr 20th 2009 8:47PM
Except Resident Evil 5 played nothing like Gears of War.
Obie (XBL: Obienator) @ Apr 20th 2009 9:08PM
I am currently playing RE5 and enjoying it a lot more than Gears 2, but that is just my personal opinion. :)
Joe @ Apr 20th 2009 9:26PM
Funny you should say that because the over-the-shoulder Gears of War camera was inspired by Resident Evil 4 so if anything Gears ripped off of RE.

I remember when this was called Gears of War.
Of course, saying a game looks like Gears of War is not a bad thing.

Arttemis @ Apr 20th 2009 8:54PM
It seems that they're rising above the usual drivel, but Batman: Arkham Asylum isn't connected to any movies.
With that said, I thought Sega's Iron Man game was decent despite the obviously lazy job done with it - only if you can get it for super cheap.
Obie (XBL: Obienator) @ Apr 20th 2009 9:09PM
Don't jinx it dude!
Mr French @ Apr 21st 2009 1:11AM
I'd say so far they're looking better. But seeing as how none of these games are out yet, we'll have to wait and see..

goal accomplished Joystiq. i'm getting the 360 version just because that's the only system you tagged.
Roofie @ Apr 20th 2009 8:46PM
I noticed that as well. Is this game not a multi-plat?
atrimus @ Apr 20th 2009 9:06PM
it is. who knows why Joystiq only tagged XBox?

R.I.P Eight Days cover system. :(
(hope someone resurrects this game, or at least it's CS).
Arttemis @ Apr 21st 2009 12:59AM
Wow... Absolutely amazing video, ryan. That's the kind of innovative spin on cover systems that all games should be aiming for.
Thanks for the link. This definitely needs to be implemented in future games.

Looks decent and movie titles usually have easy achievements, could be a good $20 buy.
Magic Whiskey @ Apr 20th 2009 9:52PM

Maybe more fun looking than Gears 2? Perhaps...to me.

The minigame is going to have John Connor punching Sarah Connor, for the full Bale experience.
Anyway, this game needs to have "Easy", "Normal", "Hard", and "KICK YOUR FUCKIN' ASS!" difficulty levels.
