Broken Steel DLC makes Fallout 3 endless on May 5
So, you've taken part in Operation Anchorage and visited The Pitt and you're still hungry for more Fallout 3 content? Luckily you don't have too much longer to wait for Broken Steel, the third -- and largest -- piece of downloadable content for the game, which will be made available on Xbox Live and PC on May 5.
Not only does Broken Steel add a new main quest line which, at four to five hours, is longer than The Pitt, but it also removes a lot of Fallout 3 fans' major qualms with the game -- the ending. Broken Steel takes place after the original ending of the game, allowing you to continue to explore the world after the main quest line is complete. It also increases the level cap from 20 to 30 and introduces some new high-level perks, armor and weapons.
The original Fallout 3 endgame has been changed, so that three companions will no longer refuse to aid you in your final task. The Broken Steel story picks up two weeks later, with you dealing of the consequences of your actions. Don't worry, completing Broken Steel won't end the game either. The folks at Bethesda haven't moved the finishing line -- they've dismantled it.
As a result of the level cap increase, you'll be facing much tougher enemies. The amount of experience required to reach the new levels is designed to keep you playing the game for much longer than the new main quest will last, which is why new side missions have also been included. You'll be traveling all over the Capital Wastelands again, though things may have now changed to reflect your earlier actions.
New areas have also been added, including the Presidential Tunnels under the White House and the new world space, Adam's Airforce Base. Fans of Dogmeat will be happy to hear that one of the new perks -- "Puppies!" -- allows your loyal pet to reincarnate at a specific location if something terrible should happen to it. Bethesda were tight lipped on any more perk details, but that means plenty of surprises once the content drops on May 5.
Bethesda was tempted to raise the price for Broken Steel, considering the amount of new content. You'll be happy to hear that their madness soon left them -- the DLC will sell for the usual 800

That's what I was thinking. This should have been out months ago, but was pushed back to April, only to be apparently pushed back again to freakin' Cinco De Mayo. I stopped playing back then they announced the removal of the level cap, as I'd already reached 20, so what was the point of continuing the pointless grind?
Oh well, I waited this long... what's 14 more days?
wargamer17 @ Apr 21st 2009 10:30AM
I haven't even completed the game yet, but that is really really good news!! I've been trying to do everything I can in the game before completing it. Now that I can go back, plus all the DLC, it's awesome!
Latin_Trident @ Apr 21st 2009 12:09PM
I haven't purchased the game yet but when I do, I will make sure it is Fallout 3 with all of the DLC included on the disc; Like Oblivion with all of the DLC included. Nice!

god damnit put the dlc's on PS3!!! every single person who bought the game will buy the packs. we always get shafted
Swagman @ Apr 21st 2009 2:25PM
Stop whining and buy an Xbox 360 already.
You know, I swear last-gen when Playstation was getting all the exclusives, I never heard the Xbox crowd whine anywhere near as much as the Playstation crowd does now that the shoe is on the other foot.
NOTE TO PLAYSTATION FANS:
Last-gen, most Xboxers were humble enough to swallow their pride and buy a PS2 to go along with their Xbox. Almost everyone I knew who had an Xbox, had a PS2 as well, including myself. The shoe is on the other foot now, and it's time for the Playstation fans to man up or shut up. The internets is tired of hearing you babies whine about why you got shafted for buying a PS3 . . . how you got shafted spending more money on a PS3 . . . how you got shafted because the PS3 does not get exclusive games that are on the Xbox 360 . . . how you got shafted because the PS3 does not have all the cool features the Xbox 360's got . . . how you got shafted because PS3 does not get into any of the cool betas . . . how you got shafted because the PS3 does not get any of the cool DLC . . . etc.
The entire internet has heard it all a bazillion times before, and has long ago grown so damned tired of it. Sony was not trying to do anything this gen but sell everyone a blu-ray player this gen. And that is all you got for your loyal support, a blu-ray player and little else. But everyone already knows this, and have known this for years now, so stop complaining already, and buy an Xbox 360 for chrisakes!
And for the record, I do very much own a PS3. I got a 60GB model at launch. Of course over the last three years, there has not been much to use it for other than playing blu-rays. But the fact is, even as an Xbox fan, I still own a one so I can play any exclusives that eventually show up on the PS3 . . . on the rare cases when an actually worthy exclusive shows up on the PS3.
But the numbers show time and time and time again, that PS3 owners do not even buy PS3 exclusive content in numbers that matter, even when they do show up. I swear more of my Xbox loving friends have played the best exclusives on PS3 than all the Sony fanboys that I know. Be those AAA killer titles, Ratchet & Clank, Uncharted, Folklore, or even new AAA classics like LittleBigPlanet, Resistance 2 and Killzone 2, fact of the matter is, PS3 fans are too busy complaining to the internet about how it is so unfair that Xbox is getting exclusives, than actually playing the exclusives you got . . . which is why it took 8 weeks for Killzone 2 to break a million copies worldwide, when a game that good should have broken two million copies in it's first week of release . . . if it were on the Xbox 360, it would have broken two million copies in the first week. Of course if it were on the Xbox 360, people would actually be playing the game, instead of bitching to the internet about how unfair the world. As good as those games are, PS3 fans simply just do not bother buying them . . . and then have the nerve to complain whenever a 3rd party brings an exclusive anything to Xbox 360. And you wonder why after three years of PS3, the Xbox 360 still has twice as many exclusives in development than the PS3.
And the way I see it, if an Xbox fan can humble himself and buy a PS3 for the few exclusives that show up on it, then PS3 fans should have nothing to complain about getting a Xbox 360 . . . especially when the Xbox 360 costs hundreds of $$$$ less, yet has 3x as many exclusives already released.
So please, either buy an Xbox 360 already, or learn to be satisfied with having less on the Playstation 3. Either way, just stop complaining like whining, little pussies on the internet. Just because you bought the PS3 as your exclusive console, does not mean you have to publicly debase yourself, by sacrificing your last shred of dignity in front of the whole world.
Leobebes (BDF: Braid Defence Force) @ Apr 21st 2009 2:51PM
That is what I have been saying. I own a PS3 and I love it! MLB the Show is awesome! But the 360 clearly has the most third party support this generation and deservedly so. The 360 is inexpensive enough now to be a complimentary system and for some people to flat our refuse to buy one out of pure stubbornness makes me sad when I hear bitching and moaning about the lead platform acting like *gasp* the lead platform.
coffins outside the door @ Apr 21st 2009 3:45PM
that's a lot of typing for a guy with so many games to play on their 360.
:P
Pip @ Apr 21st 2009 3:46PM
I bought the PS3 version and I own a 360 as well. I had no idea DLC was locked to PC or 360 versions only when I got the game.
Bethesda really f'ing sucks for doing this. If they had a trade-in program where I could send my PS3 version for a 360 version I'd be up for that.
That said, I've been a huge Bethesda fan since Terminator: Future Shock, but this crap they're pulling with Fallout 3 should bar them from any awards they're getting for this game.
Peter Szijarto @ Apr 21st 2009 3:51PM
that has got to be the most flaming 360fanboy rant i've ever heard!
"Of course over the last three years, there has not been much to use it for other than playing blu-rays."
why even throw that statement in there. I bought a 60gb original ps3 and i love it. i do have a life and enjoy other things such as outdoor activities, hanging out with friends, having a girlfriend, etc etc. i don't need two systems. with the economy in the slumps its hard for me too justify buying another expensive system. sure i would love to play left 4 dead, or halo wars, and fable 2. the simple fact that microsoft had 50 million dollars or whatever to put in bethesdas pocket is simply crazy. i guess greed overrules the fans.
also, you could have probably done a lot more with your 20 minutes spent writing your post.
Ezio Auditore de Firenze (PSN slycooper_rocker) @ Apr 21st 2009 6:12PM
so... $10 dlc or a $400 elite (which is the only 360 model i would consider buying)?
liamos @ Apr 21st 2009 6:22PM
Well... Bethesda did say before the game release that it will look better on the PC and 360 and all DLC is EXCLUSIVE to the 360 and PC. So its not our fault you were an idiot and didn't research into your purchase.
Pip @ Apr 21st 2009 7:12PM
Since when do games require you to follow dev quotes to decide on buying games? It's ridiculous. I bought the game on a whim because I was bored. I had the 360 version in my hand, and decided to get the PS3 version because they had the collectors lunchbox edition for the same price. I had NO IDEA Bethesda was going to f me in the rear over such a decision.
jdawg @ Apr 21st 2009 7:15PM
swag did you really just type all of that in response to a one-liner? jesus christ who cares
messma02 @ Apr 21st 2009 7:38PM
Swagman, you do realize that technically speaking dlc is sold at a higher percentage of installed base for the ps3 than the 360....
and before you rant again, i own a 360, wii and ps3 and i have fallout 3 on the 360.
mynk @ Apr 22nd 2009 12:11AM
i dont get all the arguments that talk of how it is bad of microsoft to pay developers money in order to get exclusives, and saying how sony cannot afford the same.
think about it for two fucking seconds, and any 5 year old will be able to tell you
a. that as a buisness, microsoft will only invest relatively small amounts compared to how much profit they are making off the deal. the number of people that went for the DLC, and bought fallout 3 on the 360 instead was so great that the 50 million they put in the developers pocket more than paid off for itself by a few folds. thats what buisness do.
b. the developer or rather their publishers only agreed to the deal because either they only like developing on 360 or they would make much more total profit off making it exclusive and getting paid that microsoft bonus, which is a big win for the developer with half the work and double the cash, giving them money for bigger projects in the future, hence better games
c. that with sony dealing in the same buisness as microsoft - the money microsoft spends is from its gaming divison too, not from their windows divison - so sony could make that kind of an INvESTMENT for their gamers too, not to mention the money they also make from their home electronics lineup + VIAO + ericson.
d. as a gamer, i would rather that the compnay that makes my console care about me enough in order to ensure quality content that justifies my choice, because if they were to not secure such exclusives or promote such development, then i would have nothing to play in the first place.
i think the reason that microsoft understands the kind of marketing where you can buy out exclusives, or rather promote dlc development on their consoles is enough to buy their console. because you can be sure you'll be in for something sweet like fallout 3 DLC.

Don't forget the fable DLC, and Halo's mythic map pack.

Jerk Face @ Apr 21st 2009 12:32PM
Me too. Though I've already played Lost and Damned (It's pretty fuckin' good, by the way). Now I can rip through this and the other two DLC packs and actually get my EXP for doing so!
Adam @ Apr 21st 2009 1:47PM
Also waiting to purchase all 3 at once. Makes no sense to play the first two when my EXP doesn't count for anything.
Brady @ Apr 21st 2009 10:50AM
I thought for sure they would raise the price. This is good news. Kudos to Bethesda for doing right by the community. I already have over a hundred dollars invested in this game.
tashpool @ Apr 21st 2009 1:19PM
Right by the community to neglect over a million PS3 users? Right by the community to release earlier expansions that had to be patched because the few hours of gameplay they provided was not production ready? Horse armor. Seriously, Horse freaking armor.
I don't know, I really don't feel like Bethesda has the whole community thing down yet.

Jared Greenwald @ Apr 21st 2009 10:57AM
Why will Bethesda not release this DLC for PS3??
Sam @ Apr 21st 2009 11:34AM
I think its Live only, since its distributed through GFW on PC and not through their own method or through steam.
Alphathon @ Apr 21st 2009 11:49AM
Yeah, it is through live, but that's not why it's not on PS3. I'm pretty sure it's because Microsoft payed Bethesda to only put it on their platforms, like with Rockstar and GTA IV. Could be wrong though. *likes that he has it on the PC and not PS3...Mods and DLC FTW*
DeepFriedSushi @ Apr 21st 2009 2:54PM
has to do with the success of live vs psn distrubtion of dlc. the dlc are somwhat large so rather than to deal with the bandwidth fees on psn they just had it exclusive to live. also xbox has a very large market share in america. also i think they know that the ps3 version is buggy so adding any dlc could be a nightmare to debug.
rhcpsfan @ Apr 21st 2009 4:48PM
Why on earth was he down-rated for that comment. It's a perfectly reasonable question . A huge amount of ps3 users bought the game from a company that they thought cared about them the same as anyone else. Now with no official explanation as to why from the company they tell us that if we want to be treated the same we have to change our system to the one that's paying them the most. That's pure and simple greed, and I for one expected more from a company who's products I have enjoyed for years.
Ezio Auditore de Firenze (PSN slycooper_rocker) @ Apr 21st 2009 6:16PM
no MS did pay them off for it.
Gemini Ace @ Apr 21st 2009 10:58AM
I haven't played the game and don't really care, but doesn't completely changing the original ending of a game ruin the experience?
If Bungie came along and retroactively changed the ending to Halo 3 just so they could tack on paid content, wouldn't that cheapen the original ending?
Just sayin'...
baby sea tuna @ Apr 21st 2009 11:06AM
"I haven't played the game and don't really care"
You really just should have stopped there.
Sam @ Apr 21st 2009 11:37AM
but... halo 3 didn't have an ending, it had a cliffhanger, they all had cliffhangers 'cept for the original Halo (aka the good one) so your argument has failed in that not only did halo leave out an ending to tack on additional GAMES but they were designed that way from the beginning. your argument fails miserably.
Snowblind @ Apr 21st 2009 11:54AM
The original Halo's ending was more a cliff hanger than the third games, which ended the story pretty nicely, while still leaving open MC's story for a sequel.
Alphathon @ Apr 21st 2009 12:10PM
[spoiler alert!] (if you havn't finished the game)
Judging by the article, it doesn't actually change that much. The story is the same, it just meens that the player doesn't have to die. Basically to finish the game, you have to go into a radiation flooded room to operate a machine. You can have companions who are resistant to radiation and wouldn't die, but they all refuse to do it (along the lines of "This is your destiny, I cannot do this for you"). It actually makes the ending make more sense, by removing the "f*ck you, we could all survive, but we're all stubborn and so you have to die"
Gemini Ace @ Apr 21st 2009 12:16PM
No, I'm good. Thanks!
Manly Mcbeefigan (Mr. ESC) @ Apr 21st 2009 12:24PM
snowblind eh those are also cliffhangers. The story just ends in something like "The End?".
***spoilers***
Nop the aren't changing the ending to sell us stuff they are just allowing you to continue from the end also it makes sense I took like OVER 9000 Rad x pills and Rad-away and Lyons could've easily open the door to let me crawl back in or if Lyons died I don't know why the game had to end,I survived.
Something that didn't make sense either is that I couldn't send one of my companions to activate it for example the Super Mutant could've easily done it.
Also the community pretty much wanted this to happen so no and you fail because you haven't played Fallout 3.
Adnium @ Apr 21st 2009 6:35PM
No, mainly because the ending of Fallout 3 doesn't strand the main character in the middle of the void. You're also comparing two completely different genres: while one is a directed experience, the other is a place for the player to inhabit. Halo was linear, and adding more campaign content would feel 'tacked on'. Raising the (moronic) level cap and giving the world of Fallout 3 a greater lease of life with the ability to see the main plot out to its conclusion, while also adding more things to do in the world itself, is a necessary addition which only enriches the experience rather than cheapening it.
DarkMan08 @ Apr 21st 2009 10:58AM
So.. When does the "Game of the Year Edition" comes out?
Roncore @ Apr 21st 2009 11:01AM
haha, seriously! With all the good content coming to XBL these past few months, I'm starting to run out of Hard Drive space!
In A World (XBL) @ Apr 21st 2009 3:19PM
I'm waiting for the GOTY edition as well, but if the Oblivion GOTY is any indication, you'll still have to install all the DLC from a second disc, so it really won't save on HDD space. On the plus side though you can uninstall/reinstall without having to re-download.
James Zdaniewski @ Apr 21st 2009 11:00AM
Why isn't any of the DLC coming to PS3??!!
