If Moral Fiber were a cereal, I would eat it. Would you by chance be interested in getting into a long-winded conversation on the merits of spanking, fueled wholly by anecdotal evidence and pointless conjecture in the neighborhood of 100+ comments? I wonder if Captain Commando would spank his children... That fatcat is probably sucking down $30 martinis in Monte Carlo as we speak.

+2.

How can you honestly give your opinions when the people your suppose to give opinion on is cough cough ? Paying for your all expense trip ?? Of course you'll have a more positive and affection mode after getting paid for your 30 dollar beer.

Great job guys..

On a side note I think the captivate09 information will be embargoed until next week.

....you guys didn't get an invite, did you?

Journalistic integrity is nice and all... but seriously... someone should have the integrity to both take gifts AND not let them affect your judgment! It's like when some timeshare place sends you to a show for free... you shouldn't turn down their offer just because you don't necessarily want a timeshare!

Well... that's my opinion anyway. I just wish I got offers to go to Monte Carlo, all expenses paid, to see exclusive access to Capcom games.... it's like, a dream scenario. Especially if MvC2 is there.

Guess your superman, cuz normal are affected by "BRIBES" which therefore has laws against it.

for example, future professional sport stars aren't suppose to receive gifts from colleges or professional teams.

I guess you're above human nature and the law...

It has nothing to do with one's ability to stay impartial – I would trust most of my staff implicitly (not you, McElroy). It's about the appearance of impropriety, which is as bad as impropriety itself, no? How does a reader know if one of our writers is unimpeachable? They wouldn't. And they won't need to if they know we're paying our own way.

I don't think that's true at all. I mean, especially if it's your business to be objective. These are advertising dollars. It's the same as purchasing a commercial or a billboard. These guys shouldn't take it personally, and if they realize it's just business, they can stay objective.

The real shady stuff is when they refuse to invite you unless you assure them you'll be positive, or they won't allow early access they allow everyone else unless certain conditions are met. As far as I can tell, there's no such conditions here aside from an embargo of some sort (mentioned in the MvC2 article), so I really think it's fair game.

@Christopher Grant

Yeah, true enough. It's a sad fact that poor game journalism in the past has lead to a climate where everyone is assumed guilty for these sorts of things... Still, I would hope this climate doesn't continue to exist, for everyone's sake.

@iag25

I've seen many professional journalists in different settings accept similar offers so they can get the news. It doesn't make me think they're being "bribed"... and you shouldn't think so either. It's not about being Superman or resisting human nature. And it most certainly isn't illegal to invite press to trade show events. Hell, it isn't even illegal to send them free stuff (such as games or the mighty "press kit"). They need these things to give us news.

Speaking of.... what's Joystiq's policy on free games or press kits?

Oh yeah, I remember those contests. That's pretty awesome.

I humbly suggest next time this situation comes up you pick one lucky fan to go and "report" for you! That way no one really cares if he's bias since there's no journalistic pretext, and it'll just basically give you a report on the show from the eyes of a fan having the time of his life!

Don't get me wrong by my prior tones or anything, this is my favorite site and I love what you guys do. I just wish someone would've gone to Monte Carlo, seems too great to pass up.

Sure, it might be impossible to not be affected by a company that pays for your junket, and in an ideal world you'd be able to pay to attend every event, but if given the choice between "No Joystiq Coverage Whatsoever" and "Possibly Biased Joystiq Coverage", I'd take the bias. I mean, just clearly disclose when you're on a junket, and let you readers judge the bias.

I used to get to go on similar trips. Never to anywhere super nice... but Orlando, Vancouver, and California were nice. It is hard to criticize the products when they're treating you nicely... thankfully for me, it was to community report on the MVP Series and the pre-next-gen Madden titles, which on the whole were pretty good games... So I wasn't too much of a schill.

Kudos to Joystiq for turning this stuff down, it's very tough to objectively report when they're paying for what could be one of the best vacas of your life.

so wait, let me get this straight... you don't want to be influenced by 3rd parties, so you decline on having publishers pay for your trip. at the same time, you rely on 3rd parties attending to give you their impressions on games, rather than publish your own? that makes about as little sense as possible...

We don't know what outlets accepted free airfare or hotel – they could have paid their own way. I don't know of a single outlet that discloses that information, but I know that many (if not *most*) of them do accept travel accommodations. So, caveat emptor.

That said, we can report on what other people say, and you can judge for yourself. What we're saying is that we opted not to drop the coin on this trip, and as a result can't tell you what we think about it.

I'm very proud of you guys for this!

This is actually interesting because yesterday I read on some other site (that shall not be mentioned) about getting expenses paid to report on the Bethesda event in the UK.

It was so casually dropped into the post, as if it was a normal everyday occurrence and it made my skin crawl a bit.

Well done Joystiq :-)

That was loosely related to the Monte Carlo trip. We sent Jem Alexander to Bethesda's event (he's conveniently local, right in London.)

This is amazing. Sure, Joystiq can do things that annoy, like the rebranding/uniformity or the modified, and still annoying, released this week posts, but it's good to know there are some awesome qualities and really are reasons to stay coming here.

Thanks, because all positive praise, whether they deserve it or not, would seem fishy.

I'm reading a PSP blog. I'm reading blogs the way they're meant to be read, by scrolling down, clicking read more if there's an article that's caught my attention. I scroll to a release date post, it doesn't have the PSP-bias/viewpoint commentary, and it doesn't have the info. Click the PSP logo to be taken to a page just to see that nothing is coming out, then hit back and continue scrolling down blog style. It's like being at a clothing store, browsing the shirts on the wall and when you find one you like, you have to leave and go to another store to find out the price. It should just be there. It was more enjoyable when there was a headline such as "Another week, PSP NA gets no love" with a few sentences about how fellow PSP gamers at PSP fanboy feel our pain, an appropriate conversation would take place in the comments, and you knew what was being discussed there, unlike now where I have to scan the comments to find the PSP/360 conversations and reply to them. Joystiq is just news now minus a lot of the personality that was here before (so many multiplatform games, so many generic posts about them linked back to main Joystiq). Which would you prefer?

"Now Playing"
Some crickets this week.
[PSP Logo] [Wii Logo] [360 Logo]
[DS Logo] [PS3 Logo]
-click PSP
-taken to graph of nothing

or
"No games this week again!"
Yikes...Unfortunately, the PSP game drought continues this week. But fret not! This is also the week it ends! Next week PSP has three games coming out, so it might be a good thing that you have nothing to spend your money on this week, you'll need it when X Y and Z are released on the 27th. And if you just can't make it another week, you can give X and Y's demos a spin by clicking here. What will you be playing to keep busy while you wait for next week?"

There's no question. Any and all multiplatform posts are soulless.
