If something my kids did deserves an ass-whooping they're going to get it, regardless of what lawmaker or politician says is right or wrong.

This guy went overboard though...

To move it out the way: yes, I agree parents should take adequate disciplinary actions when their child behabiour asks for it. In fact, less lenient rules in households, and more talk between families could solve a couple of society problems.
That said:

So, this guy takes a six year old to play something like boong-Ga, in with the player brutally molests the characters... and, in the end, he beats/spanks/slaps the child?
That's just short of taking the kid to a hevy porn movie, or one of those MMA fights, and punishing him for not liking it.
Hopefully he'll spend time enough in jail so his kid has a chance of living with someone sane.

A caveat: like mike said, there's no mention to the game in the original article. if that part of the tale is some creative adendum by some journalist with a twisted sense of humour, let me add: some people should not be fathers without thinking very well. Likewise, other people should not WRITE without giving the same thought.

According to one of the posters on the Cincinnati Enquirer site, the guy is on the sexual predator list in OH for attempted rape. If true the guy is just a violent bastard all around. Forget the legitimacy of spanking as punishment argument; it probably has little to do with it.

If the game in question was really Boong-Ga Boong-Ga then not only is this man a twisted lunatic for letting his 6 year old play it but he should probably be locked up after hitting the kid combined with the game they were playing. Who knows what else he will do. Where is Joystiq getting Boong-Ga Boong-Ga from? It is not in the source article.

Quick note: In the article it states "The Enquirer will update this story as information develops." They mean the Cincinnati Enquirer not the National Enquirer if any of you were wondering (yes I know that is the source website in the link)

I figured he was joking because it would be highly unusual for a father to have such an arcade machine in his house and let his kid play... cause yeah if so he should probably be locked up. But I wasn't willing to rule anything out; I've heard less believable things.

I think we all need to know the context before we judge the father. I mean, if the son died durring the level "Cortana" in Halo 3 on Legendary mode... yes, his dad is a dick. But if this kid couldn't complete the first level of LEGO: Star Wars, his father was well within his right, and possibly his moral duty to punish him in such a way.

P.S. Anyone who thinks spanking is always wrong has never met a spoiled bratt with parents who refused to consider it.

You don't hit your child for poor video game performance. But it seems people don't know the fine line between discipline and abuse. I do believe corporal punishment may be needed IF your child will not listen and obey after repeating yourself so many times or does something inexcusable. If your child is well behaved and well mannered you don't need it but if he's a brat that chooses to disregard the rules then yes he should be disciplined. Thing is some parents don't explain to the child why they had to resort to corporal punishment as discipline. If you spank your child you should explain to him why so that they understand. If you just hit your child and don't tell him why, that's when we get the beaters and violent kids. It's all about balance. I was a disobedient child and I got spanked quite a bit but they explained to me why it was I was disciplined so that I do not become confused. I didn't turn out to be violent or a fighter. In my entire life (I'm 20) I've only gotten in about 3 fights and I never resort to violence unless I'm not given much of a choice. Discipline is neccesary to those that refuse to behave and obey, BUT it has to be used properly and with responsibility. I don't mean to get racial but it's more apparent in Caucasian families that they either don't discipline their children enough or they go to far and beat the kid (statistics don't lie). I've seen them give their kid "time-outs", which is BS. Point of story, discipline their ass but do it responsibly. On topic, that guy is a bad father, and LOL @ the game.

Beating the kid for being bad at games is wrong. But if spankings are abuse then I was hella abused as a kid.

Kids being raised without discipline lead to kids running wild. And don't give me Time out or go to your room crap. That never taught me anything. They tried. I just kept pulling the same crap. Sitting me in a corner for 10 minutes gave me 10 minutes to think up what to do next. And sending me to my room? I'd rather have been in my room. I had TV, computer, video games, music and no one bothering me.

Oh and don't try grounding. That only stopped me until no one was home. Or people got tired of me being in the house.

I have a 6 year old that I just beat yesterday. I spanked the hell out of him. Why? Because the big dummy snuck out the window of his room onto the roof. He had even lied saying that he was just going to the restroom, knowing he planned on going out as he said it. Yes, he got spanked. Every child is different, but I firmly believe that sometimes it needs to happen. Umm....just not over a game. lol. Dummy.

I actually threw up in my mouth a little when I read about what kind of game Booong-Ga Booong-Ga was. This man needed some help if he's subjecting his son to this kind of sh*t. And the son should be grateful to get away from such a disturbed father. It's always troubling to see a family disturbed, but it's ultimately for the greater good.

Beating your kids is unacceptable. I've been through it. But spanking your kids is an entirely different thing. I absolutly hate to spank my kids. I almost never do it. When I do I feel horrible about it, and I should because I love my kids and can't stand to see them upset. But I realize I'm letting them down if they don't learn discipline. I always try other options first, such as grounding, no tv, etc. But if I don't spank them, they will run amuck, knowing there won't be a severe punishment.

I rarely do this, and they know I hate to do it, and they will push to see how far I'll let them go. And spanking is never a first option, only a last resort. Only use your bare hand on there backside. Again, it has to be pretty bad, like doing something dangerous, or distespecting their mother, for it to get to that.

I know it's not necessary for every child. But the fact that this is frowned on is a big reason for the decline of our society. Kids grow up never learning disciplne or responsibility. And have this dilusional view of entitlement because they're used to never being told no.

Beating your kids doesn't teach them anything other than to be afraid of the people they're supposed to be able to trust. They are going to grow up worse off for the violence you inflicted on them.

Just remember, lighting fires, killing small animals, and wetting the bed are all signs that you're a great parent.

I must say I am not too surprised. Not alot of forward thinking people there at all.

I'm also not saying that beating/spanking your kids is ok, but do we really know what happened? Maybe this kid did poorly then threw his Wiimote across the room and broke it? If they live in Price Hill you can bet they are not millionaires and that could be a hefty investment for them.

Just playing devils advocate.

@ Mr. Mobius
I was spanked as a child, not many times; only when my parents deemed it necessary; yet I've grown up to be a good citizen! I don't drink or smoke, I've never been on the wrong side of the law, etc. I got offered a $20,000 scholarship to a university but decided to go to for a full ride at a community college, since I didn't want to put the financial strain on my parents.

All in all, it doesn't matter whether you get or not you've gotten spanked. It's all about other experiences that lead to how a person will turn out. I've taken psychology and no where in any of my books has it said that spanking led to children becoming bad seeds.

Spanking ain't sh*t, i used to get the belt when i was growing up. I remember, he use to hold both my hands in one of his hand while I looked at the other hand doing the belt operation in my back, ass and leg. One of my older brother is 2 yrs older than I, and he was a l'il tougher than i was, my father's main weapon to rip his butt was the radio's electrical cord, and my oldest brother was far tougher than all of us my pop's main weapon to rip his butt was his boxing/Taekwando's skills to knock him out. well well im no longer a kid anymore, and i haven't see my pop since i joined the military, i was 18yrs old when joined, it's now been 8yrs since we never talk or see each other. I hate him so much i'll never raise my hand on my kids.

Well...this seems like a very argumented article,I was voted down a lot in my previous comments, the "assholes" thing probably was not a very good idea, sorry if anyone felt ofended,I Just want to express my point of opinion I am NOT saying that because you get spanked you gonna become some assasin or the next Son of Sam or something,I just want the people who are with spanking to acknowledge the fact that, even if you are not spanked, you can become a nice citizen and a nice person as well,It doesnt depend on if you are spanked or not, being a great parent is a whole different thing.

I was never spanked or "corporaly punished" in my life and I think Ive grown to be nice...or at least kinda xD.
