Sony's no longer denying PSP's overwhelming piracy problem. SCEA's Peter Dille spoke to Gamasutra about revitalizing the manufacturer's handheld, and put emphasis on one of the greatest hurdles facing its business. "I'm convinced and we're convinced that piracy has taken out a big chunk of our software sales on PSP ... we need to do something to address this because it's criminal what's going on, quite frankly."
While Sony's bottom line is obviously affected, Dille reiterates that developers are also suffering from the piracy scene on PSP. "It's not good for us, but it's not good for the development community. We can look at data from BitTorrent sites from the day Resistance: Retribution goes on sale and see how many copies are being downloaded illegally, and it's frankly sickening. We are spending a lot of time talking about how we can deal with that problem."
Dille suggests the solution to their problem will come in a multi-faceted approach. Yes, Sony's legal department will get involved, but education is also key. Dille wants to emphasize how serious the matter is to the average PSP owner. "I think gamers, if they understood if this meant that a platform would go away, can we convince gamers to pay for their content?"

torrent sites aren't the only problem. there are other sites, like pspiso, that have users that upload TONS of pirated games, movies, and music to sites like megaupload and rapidshare. those sites are a bigger problem because downloads are drastically faster than torrents.

Thanks for the link!
What content providers don't understand is the problem is on their end. When I can play games without switching discs or if I can play on something with a short load time off the Memory stick rather than UMD, then I will do it.
It's about quality, not cost. They can provide me with a better disstribution platform but don't. Fix it and I'll come back. I think there have been significant advances, but I need the full PSP library and homebrew access too.

What it all comes down to is the security on the PSP
Even if PSP owners know pirating games will ruin the PSP, they will still do it
We pirate stuff because its easy & free. Even if it hurts the industry, most people simply dont care, and its completly understandable because people are cheap...
I think its a little too late for the PSP, they helped with the PSP-3000, but that wont be enough, so next time... on the PSP2, I sure hope they tighten the security and prevent anyone from hacking it
It sucks because im all for homebrew, but the only way that usually happens comes with the ability to pirate games (burn, store, etc)

Wii60, I really hope one day, someone breaks into your house, steals all your shit, and says to you "If YOU provided a more convenient way for me to own your stuff, this wouldn't be happening."
"What content providers don't understand is the problem is on their end. When I can play games without switching discs or if I can play on something with a short load time off the Memory stick rather than UMD, then I will do it."
Funny, this arguement is vaguely reasonable. Because you DO have a valid point on this. Except, of course, the same utility that torrent site uses to snag the ISO off the UMD is available to you and if this was really your concern, you could BUY the damn game, rip it to ISO, and do it that way like I do. But you won't cause you're a thief and this is your excuse.
"It's about quality, not cost. They can provide me with a better disstribution platform but don't. Fix it and I'll come back. I think there have been significant advances, but I need the full PSP library and homebrew access too."
Actually, here's the common misconception. You don't NEED shit. Developers NEED the money you stole from them. Publishers NEED the sales to continue supporting the platform. Sony NEEDs the PSP to be a viable platform so that PSP2 can actually compete and those of use who hate one console dominated markets can actually have a choice. You WANT free games. So you make excuses while you steal.
If the way Sony is running PSP isn't to your liking, don't buy it, the games, or anything. That's your choice. But if you have a disagreement, this doesn't mean you can just fucking steal as a protest. You're scum and a tiny pathetic thief using convenience excuses to validate your theft. Games are a luxury item. If you're not willing to pay, you shouldn't have the luxury.

This is where I call BS. It ABSOLUTELY is about cost for you. Like I said, I run custom firmware on both my PSP-phat and slim. I also rarely use the discs because of faster load times and convenience of not carrying them around. BUT, I have paid for every single one of my 30+ games. I even bought a second 16GB memstick. There is no reason that you can't run homebrew and do everything you are saying you can't while still paying the people that need to get paid.
Piracy is a problem because people are a) cheap and b) lazy. "But I wouldn't have bought it anyway." So, that doesn't mean you still get to play it for free. Go to your job, and when your boss says "hey, I know I said I'd pay you $5.50/hour, but I'll take it for free because I'd never pay $5.50/hour for anyone to do your job" and we'll see how that logic holds up.They make the content, they get to set the price. If you don't like it, grow a pair and vote with your wallet. Piracy just gives content providers (SONY, RIAA, etc) an excuse to make it harder for the average consumer to enjoy what they paid for.

It's fine to get a little worked up in your righteous anger over piracy, but the piracy really isn't hurting their bottom line as much as they let on. We have all seen the data and polls, and we analogously all know the usual suspects in our spheres, who would not play the games, much less buy them, if they could not pirate them.
@Sheppy -
It's not theft. It's infringement. Your analogy about breaking in doesn't apply. It would apply if the person who broke in made a copy of all your stuff (that you paid for) but you retained the originals.

A well reasoned response chispito but there is no break-in involved at all actually.
A better comparison would be if you were offering copies of your stuff for a price and then the people who bought those copies made further copies and gave them away. In the end you never lose your stuff.
I feel as though people are making things slimier than they actually are.
Companies can't just expect that their information is worth something anymore. They are going to have to find ways to make people see a reason to give value to what is limitlessly reproducible.

Or start offering better games. PC pirates say if demos were available there'd be less piracy. Maybe a little less, but demos are hardly the solution.
The PSP has some great games, but there isn't much variety. Also, the DS has a bigger piracy problem than the psp. So it comes down to marketing and software. Who knew...

Aw, such ignorance. I pay for PSP games, but that's because I only play one every month or so and am not cheap. People that pirate games all claim to do it for a number of reasons that Sony will not listen to, like being able to carry more than one with them at a time. Sony is still not listening, and it's been years, so it's funny to see them claim they are. Their answer has been firmware updates, and they've relied on this for a very long time. It's taken them Resistance sales numbers and this long to realize that doesn't work.
I think they should launch a really slick PSP2 with things gamers and developers want to get games made and gamers wanting...two analog sticks, ability to store/download games to a memory card, give gamers and developers a reason to care again.

uh, what?
What people want is free games, the rest tend to be excuses. The sad thing is that even cheap downloadable games STILL get pirated, there is just no excuse for it, which goes on to prove that what people are really looking for is free games.
"Sony is still not listening, and it's been years, so it's funny to see them claim they are"
Because adding a second analog, competing with retailers, and lowering the prices in hope that people will buy games is easy...right?
It takes a while, and they have improved a hell lot, it is rather ignorant to say that they don't listen.
People wanted a PSP PSN store, and they brought it, people wanted support for more formats, they added them, some wanted skype, they added it as well. Multiple things have been added, give credit were due.

In the first year after release there was only a game or two worth buying.
Even now there's only a handful of games that would be worth playing for free.
It's a compounding problem starting with low quality games, which in turn leads less people to buy games, which then leads to less quality games coming out.

This statement has NEVER been true. Within the first year, PSP had several RPGs, Ridge Racer, Wipeout, Twisted Metal, Hot Shots Golf, Lumines, etc. Tons of great games within it's first year and a launch lineup, frankly, only rivaled by the Dreamcast.
The "It has no games" is only a valid complaint recently and frankly, I can't blame developers since PSP owners outside of Japan WON'T FUCKING BUY GAMES.

I hate to say it, but I kind of agree. Sure the psp has lots of good games, but does it have lots of really great games, the kind of games that sell consoles? Many people will disagree with me, but a good portion of the success of nintendo's series of handheld consoles can be traced to a single game franchise: pokemon. Since the very first games came out on the monochrome gameboy, people were addicted to them like crack. Now a decade later many people still buy nin's handheld just to play pokemon. And you can look on any rom site and find pirated roms of any pokemon game, but nobody cares since nintendo still makes its millions regardless.
So the question is: are there any games like that for the psp? About the closest thing I can think of is Monster Hunter, but the only place that game has been insanely popular is in Japan.

@Dave: Monster Hunter is one thing, but the real seller is Gundam. They have a ton of awesome Gundam games (and even some not-so-awesome games) on the PSP which makes it a must for most of the gamers in Asia (who by association with nerdiness love their gundam). It's pretty much the same deal for Winning Eleven, Super Robot Wars, and whatever else I'm forgetting.
On piracy: I've never met someone with a PSP that WASN'T modded, so they have every right to be concerned.

its about the same as a PC game.... (pc games are between 40 and 50€)
and the "platinium" games the "cheap ones" cost about 20€ which isnt really cheap. i buy them on amazon UK much cheaper that way (sometimes second hand) I would bought them if new games would cost 29€ and platinium about 10-15 €

Don't get me wrong...great titles ..but still...
THEN, they go and nix FFVII for all region release (Japan only...c'mon now, that's just a dick move...)
And NOW they want to trip about software sales and point the finger to piracy....
Sorry..but no...
Not condoning piracy mind you but ..eh, can you blame 'em? Gives some use out of it save Monster Hunter and/or Star Ocean (naming a few good ones right off the top).
Anyway..that's my 2 cents.

I love Sony Fanboys and their list of games.
It's funny how almost every story has commenter's that say the PS3 or the PSP have no good games.
Then a Sony Fanboy will list a bunch of games not even yet released as proof there are good games for that system.
Before these people were saying Lair and Heavenly Sword, this year people are saying Heavy Rain and others.
It never ends. Keep sippin that Kool-Aid.

That would be you. Games like Heavenly Sword and Lair were pretty much panned by reviewers and the gaming public.
I don't really care for Metacritic or reviews in general. I take them with a grain of salt, however the amount of games sold speaks volumes. Sure, LBP got a lot of praise but it didn't sell that well and isn't a system seller. But I will still see it on a list by some Sony fanboy.

True, you did list games that were already released, but be honest there's not really a whole lot of good games coming up for the PSP anyway. (Que list)... My observation was simply that for some reason Sony fanboys always make a list of games. I don't see Wii, DS, or Xbox fanboys making lists of games. Maybe they're too busy actually PLAYING them instead of trolling message boards.
I bought my PSP on day 1 and now it just collects dust. I really thought it was going to be this really awesome PMP that could play games and surf the net. But the awkward way of having putting videos and the clunky UI just made it unappealing really fast. I'm much happier with my iPhone for all those needs.

That would be you. Games like Heavenly Sword and Lair were pretty much panned by reviewers and the gaming public.

"Then a Sony Fanboy will list a bunch of games not even yet released as proof there are good games for that system.
Before these people were saying Lair and Heavenly Sword, this year people are saying Heavy Rain and others."
Right, I see Xbox fanboys doing this every day since last year. For the last time guys, Alan Wake has a ??? release date.

You're really focusing on those two games for the PS3, let alone the
fact this post is talking about the PSP. Whether you personally like
a game or not doesn't matter. Whether it sells gangbusters or not
isn't the final word on quality. I can think of as many good
exclusives for the PS3 as for the 360, ditto for the PSP and DS.
Claims that any one system "has no games" is just plain ignorance.
And now you know. And knowing is half the battle.
