Sony's no longer denying PSP's overwhelming piracy problem. SCEA's Peter Dille spoke to Gamasutra about revitalizing the manufacturer's handheld, and put emphasis on one of the greatest hurdles facing its business. "I'm convinced and we're convinced that piracy has taken out a big chunk of our software sales on PSP ... we need to do something to address this because it's criminal what's going on, quite frankly."
While Sony's bottom line is obviously affected, Dille reiterates that developers are also suffering from the piracy scene on PSP. "It's not good for us, but it's not good for the development community. We can look at data from BitTorrent sites from the day Resistance: Retribution goes on sale and see how many copies are being downloaded illegally, and it's frankly sickening. We are spending a lot of time talking about how we can deal with that problem."
Dille suggests the solution to their problem will come in a multi-faceted approach. Yes, Sony's legal department will get involved, but education is also key. Dille wants to emphasize how serious the matter is to the average PSP owner. "I think gamers, if they understood if this meant that a platform would go away, can we convince gamers to pay for their content?"

Sony should create a proprietary program language and make it where you need hardware to alter the machine.
And yes, with so many able to crack the codes, the publishers are pissed that you can get their shit without buying it.
Oh, by the way, I finally ranked up to MH 2 in the freedom version(it took two years. I'm in the states and there is virtually no one to play it with). I beat the hell out of the four horns quest(that desert diablos screams like a bitch towards its death and your character cowards, if you like it or not, giving the diablos a free hit. Even if you're rolling, your character stops and the game introduces that fucking animation of your guy or girl shaking like a crackwhore.) Thanks in great part to ancient potion and mega juice, damn, immunizer and kelibi horns, my plesi water sword and nerves of steal, I did it. Now I can finally move on up and eventually break out MH2 I bought a year and a half ago. Yee ha!!!!!!!

Honestly, there are a lot of bad games on the psp. I have gone through around 40 since I got the system, and only played through maybe 10.
That's a lot of money.
Few of these were worth forking over 40 bucks.
And a modded PSP is so much more powerful.

Ok. So Titor and I were talking on v.o.q.e.d. (voice over quantum entanglement device) and he said you basically have to gene unlock your devices in the future and doesn't understand why people bitch about drm and piracy.

Every couple of weeks or so, we get this same tired old BS with Sony blaming the consumer for the failure of the PSP instead of owning up to utterly abandoning the USA software and accessory market, focusing almost exclusively on Japan and failing to better
secure their own system.
And strangely enough, Joystiq falls over itself agreeing with them.
Piracy definitely exists on PSP, but NO evidence thus far provided
from ANY source proves this contention that their bottom line is any
more adversely affected than Nintendo and their DS. The Japanese and
other Asian countries pirate like crazy - and yet the PSP is doing far
better in Japan than the USA, sometimes rivaling the DS.
I'd wager a large portion of games being illegally downloaded in the
USA are Japan/Asia ONLY releases. No telling what percentage, of
course, but it's just one facet of many to this issue that Sony
refuses to acknowledge.
Seriously Andrew, it'd be great if you could provide a shred of
evidence backing up Sony's claims that Piracy is the root of all
their sales/support/PR issues (or even most of them).

I have a modded PSP, but I have not downloaded any games on it. I bought ATV game from a friend and a few demo disks too.
I want to buy my games but have them on my memory card. How do I get my games from the UMD on there?

Why should we take the blame because Sony released an inferior system? There are about 2 games per month released for the PSP, it seems. It's not our fault that they cannot keep up with the DS. Sony cares more about Japan than they do the US. That much is obvious. Their PSN PS1 game collection on Japan is actually very good while the US.....not so good. For all the quality titles people can list for the PSP, a person who owns the DS can list at least double that. The UMD is just a bad concept and idea all around. Nobody wants to carry around 10 of those when the system is supposed to be a portable device. It's already the size of a brick to begin with.
I can't believe Sony is blaming us for their problems. Sony's problem is they decided to release 2 clunky overpriced products in a time where the economy took a dump. If they released the PS3 2 years earlier then they probably would still be enjoying their success. Instead, they refuse to lower their prices, they refuse to acknowledge the benefits of homebrew(until recently), they refuse to release PS1 games regularly for the US, and they refuse to bring back backwards compatibility for their PS3s. Again, Sony can push the blame elsewhere but everybody should already know that it's all Sony's fault. It's not our fault that they came out with an easily hackable product and it's not our fault their business model for the PS3 is failing. Sony doesn't want to accept defeat with honor and I'm not surprised. A big company like this rarely does.
I have a hacked PSP just because I want to play NES, Genesis, SNES, Neo Geo, and CPS roms. I don't really care for pirating PSP games. I've only bought 4 or 5 games for it but I feel like I've got my money's worth since hacking it for the old school gaming. If I couldn't hack my PSP and enjoy these games then the PSP would've definitely been a huge waste of my money. Sony just doesn't get it. M$ is pushing for digital media/content because that's the future. Sony is late again to jump on this train. Besides, there really is no market for handhelds since Nintendo has had it on lock. A company has to have a really well developed vision and be able to execute it. Sony is not that company at this point in time to do that.
I've supported Sony since PS1 but it's obvious to me that they're falling behind on the times.

Good grace mother....of all people. Stop thinking, pirating is the reason psp is failing as it is. (its not the problem....but its sure is not helping) Good games sell no matter what, even if it can be pirated. The problem is they no care for any of the games that are out for it. Most of them are not even worth buying.
Right now there are only two games I want to buy...one is in jap. Most likely I wont get unless there eng patch for it. (and no plans for USA copy)

All the PSP has going for it is the Monster Hunter and Final Fantasy franchise.
