To make up for our poor understanding of a recent GameStop post, we've taken a few finance classes and we're ready to show off the results with a little math. In a really interesting piece profiling video game composers, Variety reports that they "can make anywhere from $1,000 to $2,500 per minute of music, and many games demand 80-100 minutes." So, calculation time:
($1,000 to $2,500 per minute) x (80 to 100 minutes) = Oh God, have we ever chosen the absolute wrong part of the video game industry to be involved in.

I just wanted to put in a plug for Video Games Live. Great show but please, shower and dress up when you go.

It took me a while to notice that the headline didn't say "Valkyrie Profile video game composers"... I got really excited for a moment thinking that this was a Valkyrie Profile centric post, but then my vision unblurred.
Also, thank you Joystiq for making much more sense with this article than on Kotaku. They have the time as 80-100 hours and when I calculated that, it came to over 15 million dollars per game. Then again, I failed math when I was in high school...

The next sentence in the article is "There is no backend royalty as in film or TV scores because games do not generate 'public performances' as defined by the performing-rights societies collecting that money."
That's... not a good thing. They damn well better be paid a good bit up front. That's all they will see.

An important thing to note is that the majority of contractual (not in-house) game composers receive only an initial stipend and then the balance of their invoice when a game ships (either to retail or a certain number of copies). This absolutely, totally can suck. If a game gets canceled mid-cycle, after all the incidental music is done, you can wind up having spent hundreds of hours on music that you don't own the rights to and only getting paid about five grand.

Variety didn't profile the more famous composers! In the style of AngryVideoGameNerd I must say: ASS!
Where's the Tommys, the Nobuos, the Kondos and MOST ESPECIALLY:
Kirby composer Jun Ishikawa and Touhou composer ZUN?
Never heard of ZUN? He's hands down one of the best game composers, right along with all the others we consider great, perhaps even BETTER. Here's the kicker now...not only do his songs inspire a shit load of remixes(with lyrics- a music group called Iosys is famous just for doing this; see Marisa Stole The Precious Thing) on youtube... he makes the Touhou games(programming, art assets, killer character design, sounds) along with the music - all by himself.
Now all of you go to touhou.wikia.com and learn - find out WHY THE FUCK has nobody brought this series to America (besides the fact he's a total indie).
