EA Sports marks 500 million online games of '09 lineup
It was not so very long ago that we were floored by the novelty of plugging a phone line into our Dreamcast and playing real games of NFL 2K1 with real other people over the internet. It's with no small amount of wonder, then, that we report EA Sports claims 500 million games of the company's titles have been played online since the '09 selection launched in June.
You've come a long way, online sports games, and we couldn't be more proud. *Dumps virtual Gatorade on head*

And for good reason. Each 09 product was probably the best effort of each title in a decade.
Madden made the big transition finally to a great game, rather than an average one.
NHL '09 is simply the best NHL game of ALL TIME. Even NHL '94.
Tiger Woods, along with the swing coach technique, introduced us to RPG golfing, where your character gets better or worse after each round. And playing it online simultaneously was simply brilliant.
Heck, even NBA Live didn't suck that bad this year. The fresh rosters were a really cool touch. Nothing sucks more than having a big trade in a sport, and not having the trade show up on the online rosters until a month after the damn trade occurring.
I don't know about NASCAR or NCAA Basketball, but I can speak for the others, and if EA Sports improves on last years titles, they'll be back to a darling in my heart, rather than a jerk.
Oh yeah, FIGHT NIGHT ROUND 4.

dont forget fifa 09.that game is brilliant. i myself have atleast a couple hundred online games of that.
OMGOMG @ Apr 22nd 2009 4:00PM
Hell, forgot about FIFA.
God, I've spent so much time playing that as well. Who'd of thought that FIFA would actually overtake the PES franchise?
CGamble20 @ Apr 22nd 2009 6:21PM
I own 09, and if we're talking about this gen, yes its the best one yet.
But it has never (except graphically) passed the PS2 predecessors. Its nowhere even close to the level feature wise that those games were. And yes, I own the games.
You could set prices for beer and hot dogs for god sakes! And ESPN had the sportscenter show which madden still hasn't added. ESPN is the most wasted exclusivity deal.
I know, 09 isn't completely awful, but its not very good. I just wish it had more.

Sorry but I can't agree with you their EA sucks and they have been that way since their '04 line up....
greg19735 @ Apr 22nd 2009 4:04PM
sure they aren't perfect but i mean who is? I disagree with you but instead of making an argument I'll point out that you used the wrong their/there/they're.
Bleu @ Apr 22nd 2009 5:21PM
point taken
CGamble20 @ Apr 22nd 2009 6:24PM
They are trying, but it seems like they're holding features back especially on Madden that the PS2 predecessors had. Why can't the add the setting of prices for beer ect., or the sportscenter show that ESPN had. The menu system is total crap also. And the game is as always really buggy.
I just want EA to actually care about the small things for once, not just shoveling in a bunch of stuff and fixing the bugs, or not fixing, later.

well damn...
Thats a LOT of Madden, Live, Tiger Woods, NHL, FIFA, ummm what else am I missing??
BunnySlapper @ Apr 22nd 2009 4:11PM
Yes, but how many retired NFL players are suing EA because of this series?
Michelobius @ Apr 22nd 2009 4:27PM
I'm still bitter about Madden taking the NFL license from the 2K series of NFL games. Boycotting Madden ever since.
CGamble20 @ Apr 22nd 2009 6:25PM
ESPN NFL 2k5 is the best football of all time IMO...
but you should get your facts straight, it was the NFL not EA who sought exclusivity. Naturally the NFL knew EA would pay the most and were the most established brand. So if you want to throw a fit, point at the NFL first.
carg0 @ Apr 22nd 2009 4:40PM
as if that means something...
Bleu @ Apr 22nd 2009 5:23PM
I have been boycotting myself...I was the biggest madden fan until I seen what they did with madden on the ps3 (my console of choice for madden) when they release that crap that they released for since '08 not only have I not purchase a madden game since but I haven't purchased an EA game and that was one of the best decisions I ever made this gen.
CGamble20 @ Apr 22nd 2009 6:27PM
They aren't worth 60 bucks, but they are worth I'd say around 40.
and 09 isn't awful, but you aren't missing much. It STILL after 4 fucking years can't beat the PS2 04-05 games.
BFBeast666 @ Apr 22nd 2009 6:40PM
And where's the news story here? I mean, EA is infamous to silently shut down servers for games that are even remotely out of date. Why maintain servers for old games when that might stop customers buying the latest "offering". After all, they WANT to play online. So they get online play... in the latest version of course.
switters @ Apr 22nd 2009 7:44PM
I love madden 09 but EA needs to fix their online servers. Bah!!! Disconnect losses made me stop playing online. Madden is the only game i've had problems with online. Get your online act together for 2010 edtion please EA. I
