Like my time with Excite Truck back at launch, my initial experience with Excitebots was exhilarating, thanks to the speed of the cars and tension in the races. It's fun, but, like Excite Truck, the learning curve is just too low.
Before long, there's no contest whatsoever in Excitebots. In the beginning, I wasn't steering so well, I missed a lot of pick-ups, and I couldn't get the turbo jumping down to save my life. But, after only a handful of races, I was proficient enough that I only saw my CPU competition during the brief few seconds before the start of each race. I think Excitebots is best played in short sessions, where one would pick up the Wiimote, crank out a race or two, and move on before things get dull.
The other flaw that has carried over from Excite Truck is the unresponsive controls. It seems like Excitebots could have really benefited from MotionPlus, because it's incredibly hard to make sharp turns when going at top speed. There's that cut-off point when you turn the Wiimote so far that it doesn't recognize your input any longer, and if you make an error during a drift or wait too long to prepare for a turn, you're going to be frustrated time and time again when you crash and burn. It's not usually a huge problem, but during those more windy races, I found myself pretty upset at the lack of response.
Excitebots isn't all bad, however. Monster Games has added fun new gimmicks, such as the short mini-games throughout each contest (like playing a violin mid-race), as well as new motion-based stuff, such as turning your racer into a walking mech, tilting the Wiimote back and forth to accelerate. These things help mix up the monotony of racing through the same locales over and over again, and help Excitebots stand out. But, like everything in this game, the more you partake in these, the easier they are to excel at, and the less fun they become.
The best way to sum it up is as such: if you liked Excite Truck, then you're going to like Excitebots. If you loved yourself some Excite Truck, then you're going to love this. But, if you were someone like me, who found Excite Truck charming at the outset, yet shallow and tedious further on, then you're going to think the same of Excitebots.

"If you loved yourself some Excite Truck, then you're going to love this."
That's all I really needed to know. I'm still not sure if I want to plop down full asking price since it doesn't look very, uh, improved, but it seems like an absurd little pick up and play game, just like Excite Truck was, and since I liked Excite Truck...
I guess I'll wait until it drops in price.

If you like crazy racing games you should try Motorstorm Pacific Rift sometime. It's alot better than the original.
PixelHustler @ Apr 22nd 2009 3:24PM
You do know it's only $40, right? Unless you want a wheel, then it's $50.
Mickey @ Apr 22nd 2009 3:54PM
Not to mention you'll also need a PS3
Highlar @ Apr 22nd 2009 4:38PM
And the other thing you get for just that $40? Read the IGN review and get it: the online component. From reading the IGN review (score of 8.4), its even better and smoother than Mario Kart Wii is for online matchmaking and play. I, for one, can't wait to try it out. Oh, and the other great thing about the online play they say? You can bet stars...yes, stars you've earned racing but haven't spent on upgrades or whatever, on races...any amount of stars, it sounds like. If you bet 2500 stars on a race, and you come in first, then you make back double: 5000 stars. Of course, if you lose, you get nothing. :) Sounds like a lot of fun to me!
el serpiente @ Apr 22nd 2009 5:13PM
$40 for a wiiware game? Ouch.

insight does have a ps3

Wow. A videoreview? A would love more of those. It's always good to see the game in action.
David Hinkle @ Apr 22nd 2009 3:24PM
I ALWAYS do those when I can. Glad you liked it! I wish I could have done one for my Godfather II review, but we didn't get our copy on time:

Lame.
Maybe if he had people to play multiplayer with he would have felt differently. I didn't ever play Excitetruck but alot of people here sing its praises. I'm guessing this game being just like excitetruck is a good thing to people who were considering buying the game. Nothing in that short video impressed me all that much but it did look kind of neat. Who knows ... maybe one day.
dangerman @ Apr 22nd 2009 3:12PM
It's already a budget title, and the online mode is excellent. He really should have waited to review until the game was out and online was functioning. The ability to play online to earn more stares to buy stuff offline is great, and the addition of betting online is even better. Pick this game up
Gun Barrier @ Apr 22nd 2009 3:14PM
It helps that the game has online multiplayer too, so that should help make the game more challenging.
warioman64 @ Apr 22nd 2009 3:16PM
I think I can sum up this game in one word, "Meh".
ScottG13 @ Apr 22nd 2009 4:16PM
I'll second that sentiment. Racing games are pretty much off my radar as it is. Cept for good ol' Burnout.
fox_h @ Oct 5th 2009 11:39AM
So, the game is too easy, but you get frustrated because you're missing turns? What?
It sounds to me like the reviewer hasn't beaten either game. If you had, you wouldn't be complaining about it being easy. The hardest tracks near the end of the game are incredibly difficult to get an S ranking on. And in order to do so you have to have very good handle on the controls, which it sounds like the reviewer doesn't. I thought the wii mote was unresponsive too, at first, until I got good. Now, I can take the sharpest turns, drift almost constantly and do tree runs like they're going out of style. And even so, the final level is STILL a bitch!
Yeah, this review smells like someone who gave up half way through, which is fine, but you could at least cop to it in the body of the review.
Moptimus Slime (Play me out, Keyboard Cat) @ Apr 22nd 2009 3:36PM
you forgot to mention how Biased he is and how Sony and Microsoft sent him money and whores to give the game a bad review
....or you could just admit his opinion was different than yours and they are allowed to coexist
el serpiente @ Apr 22nd 2009 5:06PM
Opinions cannot coexist. They must fight to the death in thunderdome. And if they break a deal, they must spin the wheel.
cichlid60 @ Apr 22nd 2009 10:30PM
I completely agree. I thought it was one of the best racers Ive played and the controls were perfect. I thought they were garbage at first but man when you get them down the game is a gem. At some Pantera to that sd card and some modern day progressive death and you got yourself a fine experience.
tmacairjordan87 @ Apr 22nd 2009 3:22PM
It sounds incredibly shallow, even for arcade racing standards.
Red Light Green Light 1-2-3 gurl @ Apr 22nd 2009 3:55PM
boo! look who's here.
DBuck_Eye @ Apr 22nd 2009 4:04PM
But that's only because it's on the Wii, right?
coffins outside the door @ Apr 22nd 2009 4:04PM
Someone who just joined yesterday?
Anyways, I like the grasshopper looking vehicle. And what's with all the colors? They really need to de-saturate that a bit. Needs more brown and grey.
Cody @ Apr 22nd 2009 4:06PM
"But that's only because it's on the Wii, right?"
LMAO so true. Oh so true.
tmacairjordan87 @ Apr 22nd 2009 4:12PM
I'm glad to see both of my stalkers gathered in 1 place. I'm going off the review, and this same game on different consoles would still be incredibly shallow.
And lay off me. If everything goes right I'll have my wii by the weekend.
Moptimus Slime (Play me out, Keyboard Cat) @ Apr 22nd 2009 4:15PM
so this game on my Magnavox Odyssey would be shallow?
Cody @ Apr 22nd 2009 4:17PM
Since when did my disagreeance with your comments turn me into a stalker of you? I comment on MAYBE 15-20% of your posts throughout a given day. Pretty much the same amount of my posts that you comment on.
Mr Khan @ Apr 22nd 2009 6:08PM
So the transaction isn't complete yet, tmac?
tmacairjordan87 @ Apr 22nd 2009 6:13PM
Nope, my brother and I have been fighting with the post office for a while as they "lost" the wii. So we've been in a battle with them for a couple weeks now and supposedly they're going to refund the full price of the wii (so $250) as well as the money for the VC/Wiiware games that were on it which should be another $50.
KEENMACHlNE @ Apr 22nd 2009 3:25PM
Based on the 10 hours my friends and I spent playing this last night (along with several other reviewers opinions) I'd say the controls are much tighter than Excite Truck.
CPUs can be easy (at least in normal difficulty, not so much super excite once you get all S ranks) since youre really competing against yourself while racing for better times, bigger air, longer drifts, more spins, and more stars overall.
The review also completely failed to mention online, which is amazing. Logs on seamlessly (easier/faster than mario kart) and is completely lag free. You can place bets on yourself to earn stars which are then used to buy vehicles, alternate paint jobs, statues, and dioramas. And your position in an online race isnt just based on where you finish, it also takes into account the stars you accumulated during the race, meaning if you really outdo your opponents you can (and will) finish the race in 4th place but get first overall.
Perhaps what i love most about the online is there's no "mario kart factor" with the handful of offensive items in the game, youre not going to be in first and have the "blue shell, bullet, red shell, bullet, you lose" happen. It's just pure racing. The courses are loaded with alternate paths and hidden secrets.
It's certainly not the same game as excite truck, and both of my friends went out to buy a copy after our binge last night.
J-Link @ Apr 22nd 2009 3:27PM
I didnt like exite truck, I found it hard to control :S, so I guess this is a pass for me...
Moptimus Slime (Play me out, Keyboard Cat) @ Apr 22nd 2009 3:38PM
if I wasn't still recovering from the DSi hitting my weakpoint for massive damage, I'd already have bought this. Hopefully next week at the latest...
Dopple Boppler @ Apr 22nd 2009 3:39PM
Have you played wifi for this David? Because from the other reviews I've read that's really where the game sounds like it shines.
David Hinkle @ Apr 22nd 2009 4:03PM
Nope, no online, sadly. I would've mentioned it in the review. :)
Cody @ Apr 22nd 2009 4:12PM
Wait David,
You're stating there's no online in the game? Or you didn't have access to go online from whereever you were reviewing the game at? Because both seem questionable (teh inturnetz are everywhere!).
We all know the former is not true, as it is very clear this game has an online component, so if the latter is the case, why not state that in the review instead of the complete lack of acknowledgment of the the online aspect of the game?
Moptimus Slime (Play me out, Keyboard Cat) @ Apr 22nd 2009 4:17PM
he meant he would have mentioned his online experience in the review IF HE HAD ONE
Cody @ Apr 22nd 2009 4:42PM
....right Moptimus, and what I'm trying to discover is WHY he didn't have one.
Thanks for trying though!
D_Average @ Apr 22nd 2009 5:53PM
His statement only makes sense if he thought there was no online. If he knew there was online and didn't try it he would have said:
"Nope, didn't try online, too lazy. I would've mentioned it in the review. :)"
Fernando Rocker @ Apr 22nd 2009 5:58PM
The answer why he didn't plya online is very easy... he didn't play enough to be able to play online.
Fernando Rocker @ Apr 22nd 2009 6:13PM
David... you need to complete School Cup to unlock the WiFi mode... I bet that's the reason why you didn't play online...
So... you basically are reviewing a game without having played a lot.
Skambu @ Apr 23rd 2009 2:28AM
He said that he couldn't play online because nobody else had the game.
That's what he said in the video review.
JerJer @ Apr 22nd 2009 3:51PM
the reviewer sounds like he hates his job haha
Jack @ Apr 22nd 2009 3:58PM
I've heard too much rap not to laugh at the prospect of "trick racing".
Eggman @ Apr 22nd 2009 3:59PM
There's nothing unresponsive about the controls at all. It just sounds like you aren't judging turns well enough.
bm @ Apr 23rd 2009 1:03AM
Agreed. A quote like "it's incredibly hard to make sharp turns when going at top speed" makes me scratch my head. Really?
Also I have never, even once, experienced the wiimote "overturning" and not registering like he has. What's he doing, trying to flip it over 180 degrees like a child would?
In one word: fail.
FunkyFlyChicken @ Apr 22nd 2009 5:13PM
I've been playing this game for 2 days, and even I could write a review more informative than this.
The reviewer fails to even mention all of the minigame modes. The minigames not only show up while racing the regular tracks, but there are also a good handful (at least 10) seperate minigames to play.
Also, it sounds to me like the reviewer didn't play past the first cup or two, because getting an S Rating on all tracks (to unlock Super Excite mode, which is MUCH more difficult), takes quite a bit of practice and patience, not to mention learning the courses. This is just like any other arcade racer - practice and replay.
Thanks to the minigames, the added craziness of bars to swing on, transforming into a robot to "run" instead of driving, each race is quite fun to play on it's own. The seperate minigame events are also a ton of fun, especially in groups.
And then you have one of the best online packages in a Wii game to date - that actually WORKS seamlessly (although there is still the hindrance of Friend codes if you want to race against a specific friend, but unfortunately that's one known limitation for Wii online games).
Seems to me in a mad rush to get a "review" out, someone took a test drive around the first 2 cups, and decided they had seen it all. This game is MUCH improved over Excite Truck, which I will definately agree was fun until you got through all of the tracks, but that was pretty much all it offered. This game offers so much more in races themselves, and in extra modes, that I find it absolutely appalling that the reviewer here fails to even mention half of the game.
BTW - the controls are spot on, even for an old fart like me, who doesn't game anywhere NEAR what I did in my youth. Take a little time to practice, and turns are quite easy to drift through, boosts and tricks are very easy to pull off too.
kid_ic @ Apr 22nd 2009 5:34PM
Despite the overall quality of the site, several of Joystiq's writers have contributed some serious FAIL lately, from Failing to report that Muramasa already had a new publisher when XSEED announced it wasn't the Pub., to Alexander calling Deca Sports 2 "shameful" despite having not played it & despite Joystiq's positive impressions on Deca Sports 1, and the general flamebaiting some articles seem geared towards.
This review is for a major multi-player Wii game with reportedly some of the best online on the console yet, which is clearly targeted at people who are going to play with friends, and yet the reviewer eclipses all of that and gives a five paragraph review, with two of the paragraphs talking about how the game is the same as its predecessor, and ZERO paragraphs at multiplayer or online. WHAT?
Maybe Joystiq should have a set list of criteria they need to touch upon for reviews. With info relevant to the target audience being a necessity.
I will say I appreciate the writer's attention to control though, and the video content. And, this game looks sick! For $39, I think its a steal.
Spartan @ Apr 22nd 2009 5:48PM
Im very excited about this.
(pun optional)
D_Average @ Apr 22nd 2009 5:49PM
I LOVED Excite Truck, but I don't think I love this. The new additions are just a bit too cheesy, sort of like a teen comedy from Disney. Just not my thing.
Erik @ Apr 23rd 2009 3:00AM
I feel the same way. The first one was good. But nothing amazing. This looks okay. The loss of real world vehicles (more or less) kills it for me though.
Mr Khan @ Apr 22nd 2009 6:06PM
The game really surpassed expectations, i think, considering how Nintendo unveiled this game with no fanfare, and gimmicked it up, and even made it more kiddie
Getting surprisingly good scores, and it seems to have the whole package and them some, with Online in the consideration.
