We found out earlier this week that Skype is "technically possible" on the Nintendo DSi, but the question remained: Will Nintendo adopt the VoIP service for its fancy new handheld? CVG put that very question to Nintendo of Europe and, more or less, got a resounding, "No."
"We have no plans to release a Skype application for Nintendo DS or DSi," the company told them. Guess we're stuck only using the service on our PSP, iPhone, computer ... wait, do we really need this on the DS too?!

I guess if nintendo doesnt release it i'm just going to have to go return my DSi .....
yeah right, i have pokemon platinum
maybe SKYPE should release skype for dsi.
wouldn't it be cool if it came on a cart and you could just buy it at the store for like $20 and it came with some free minutes to landlines or whatever?

And here I thought that Skype themselves wanted to do it...
After all the time, Nintendo still plays like a niche player. When one has such enormous market share, PR has to be much much more careful with the strong words. On investors and publishers might get wrong idea about it and refuse financing some applications they otherwise might have.
Do not get me wrong. I do not need Skype on DSi (nor do I own one (yet)). But I'm sure many folks would find it useful - and willing to pay for it.

yes, the DSi definitely needs it. where the psp has skype but has no camera, the DSi can use the two cameras (not at the same time...well actually, yes... at the same time, would be cool) and a simple layout of the person you are talking to on the top screen followed by your contacts, your video feed, and other necessary items can appear on the bottom.

Unfortunately, the PSP does have a camera. Chotto Shot in Japan, Go! Cam in Europe. It was announced for America, delayed, delayed, delayed, canceled. Didn't think it would have enough sales in the States, I guess. Stinks. (Although, a Google search revealed it doesn't work with the [imported] camera anyway.)
Not really a Skype user to be honest, but some great portable support (on one of my favorite gaming devices no less) would definitely make me willing to try.

i was considering importing one so i could use the psp as a make-shift camera, but decided not to. i have used skype on the psp and it does a pretty good job. either using the skype headset or holding the psp like a phone works well and produces no problems.

unfortunately, my PSP and DS are both first-gen, so I have no camera/Skype kind of thing for either. But I'm thinking of upgrading my PSP this summer, so I'll get to try Skype then.

Well, just because something is 'technically' possible, doesn't mean it'd be pleasant.
The DS is no powerhouse of processing power, eh? Although maybe a cart based option would work like bearcall suggested.
I'd be real suprised if anything ever materializes.

Well, the DSi has wireless G and 4x the power of the original DS, so I'd say its possible considering Pokeman is pretty much a VOIP.

I have to respectfully disagree with you on this one.
Although Skype on the DS could work really well, similar technology has been possible on the Wii, but Nintendo has avoided it.
Why?
Because Nintendo bills itself as the family gaming giant. It can't have things like perverts using Skype, etc. to lure small children.
Of course, no one would blame Nintendo if this happened, especially as I'm sure they would have many safety features. But I think we should give Nintendo some credit for being concerned with such issues.

I wouldn't blame Nintendo for online predators any more than I would Microsoft or Sony for these reports on XBLA/PSN being used by child predators.
You know why? Because it isn't their fault. They can't STOP someone from using their communication system for such purposes.
But for Nintendo to completely hold things back for everyone because of the chance that such a thing could happen is foolish.

The DSi's dual screen would be great for VoIP stuff. Top screen for who you're talking to, bottom screen for yourself. also have the bottom screen switch to menus and so on.

The original DS is already capable of VoIP. I mean, it's technically part of several games (Hunters, Puzzle League, Pokémon, etc.) so why not have a Skype app downloadable for DSi?

I would buy a DSi if it had Skype. A Skype wifi phone is already around 100 bucks or so and I would like a good reason to upgrade from my DSi. I'd buy a DSi sole to have a portable wifi video phone for $170. Doesn't that sound amazing? It's really too bad this will never happen. The future is already here, yet it's so far out of reach.

Ugh- this sounds like SUCH a good idea! Cameras? In system. Mic? In System. Internet connectivity? In system.
Do it already. DSi/apps/games on it load up super quick, unlike on PSP (which makes my DSi/DSL for commuting-rides And long trips And "long-stays" (home/friends' places/session at cafe), with my PSP only for long-stays and long-trips. Being able to make a video call during any such times, then switch Back to Pac-Pix (yeah, I still play that) would be great.
