Wii passes 8 million sold mark in Japan
Game hardware sales may be slowing down in Japan, with the Wii slowing down more, but Nintendo can still find milestones to celebrate. According to Enterbrain, the Wii has sold 8 million units in Japan as of April 19. Worldwide, the total number of consoles (shipped) passed 50 million last month. Compared to that, 8 million may not sound huge, but it's about 5 million units more than the PlayStation 3 sold as of last month.Enterbrain also released a list of the top five Wii games in Japan and their life-to-date sales:
- Wii Sports (3,481,469)
- Wii Fit (3,301,373)
- Wii Play (2,672,811)
- Mario Kart Wii (2,218,756)
- Super Smash Bros. Brawl (1,789,924)

And its 8 million more than the 360.

CTC XBL-supapaypamawio PSN-ctclaw @ Apr 22nd 2009 4:16PM
Correction, 7 million more than the 360.
Doug @ Apr 22nd 2009 5:17PM
How many people here play games?
LaughingTarget @ Apr 22nd 2009 7:02PM
I'm just a paid flunky of the company where I happen to say something positive in a Joystiq blog post, if I happen to make a correction to a misconception or outright lie about a company's product or of the assumed opposition company if I chose to say something negative about a company in a Joystiq blog post.
Playing games? I don't have time for that, I'm too busy getting paid by the company I happen to support (you decide who that is, I'll give you that mystery).
Mo @ Apr 22nd 2009 4:18PM

But DBZ has been dead for years why has this resurface
CTC XBL-supapaypamawio PSN-ctclaw @ Apr 22nd 2009 5:04PM
It hasn't resurfaced...It's been around for just about as long as the internet.

For shame, at least wait til its 9 million for this DBZ joke. Is that ok?
arcsine @ Apr 23rd 2009 2:06PM
What, 9000?
tmacairjordan87 @ Apr 22nd 2009 4:18PM
Wait, if it's 8 million then why does wii sports only have 3.4 million?
twilightlynk.com @ Apr 22nd 2009 4:19PM
Wii Sports isn't bundled with the console in Japan
tmacairjordan87 @ Apr 22nd 2009 4:20PM
Ah, that makes more sense.
Moptimus Slime (Play me out, Keyboard Cat) @ Apr 22nd 2009 4:21PM
yeah, thats only close to HALF of the install base! Its proof that even people in Japan don't buy Wii games!

Sorry but I just can't Picture Vegeta saying: "It's Over 8 MILLION!?!?!?!!?!?"
NaeemTHM @ Apr 22nd 2009 4:29PM
He's still saying: "IT'S OVER 9000?!?!?"
See...because 8,000,000>9,000
...I think. Lemme check the abacus.
O___O
This thing doesn't go past 100!
So...IT'S OVER 100!?!?!
Doug @ Apr 22nd 2009 5:18PM
Lol, numbering fail.
Magetto @ Apr 22nd 2009 10:53PM
It was 8000 in the Japanese version. Translation error turned it into 9000 for us English speakers.
BPMOmega [gamertag] @ Apr 23rd 2009 2:44AM
I don't think it was a translation error... Even Japanese newbies can tell the difference between 8 and 9... It was certainly done on purpose, for one reason or another. Maybe it sounds... Cooler?
I mean, even FUNimation's redub (and redub of the redub) still says 9,000 instead of 8,000... So, I feel it was done intentionally.
Feba @ Apr 22nd 2009 4:23PM
I have to say, Mario Kart doing better than Brawl will always confuse me.
I'm sure there's a lot of people out there that love Mario Kart, and there's nothing wrong with that, but I would've expected Brawl to be a far more wide-reaching hit.
jacob @ Apr 22nd 2009 4:26PM
I thought the same thing.
CTC XBL-supapaypamawio PSN-ctclaw @ Apr 22nd 2009 4:37PM
Mario Kart reaches the casuals. I have plenty of casual friends that won't even touch Brawl but love to play Mario Kart.
jacob @ Apr 22nd 2009 4:23PM
I love the hate joystiq has for sony, its hilarious. :)
NaeemTHM @ Apr 22nd 2009 4:27PM
Ahhh fanboys, they can only see when negative things are said about their beloved consoles.
Jacob, Joystiq pokes fun at all three companies. Quit adding fuel to the incredibly annoying console war.
Erik @ Apr 22nd 2009 4:28PM
The PS3's are intert!
Reuben @ Apr 22nd 2009 4:29PM
I agree with NaeemTHM (JTHM is my favorite comic series), but Joystiq pokes fun at all three of the major consoles equally.
Please, move on with your life.
uncle jesse @ Apr 22nd 2009 4:41PM

Dante G @ Apr 22nd 2009 4:47PM
If MS is at 1 million and sony at 3, that would make 4 millions. Considering Nintendo's claim of 8 millions, Nintendo has 66.66% of the console market in japan, sony holds a 25% and MS an 8.33%
That's what I call pwnage.
Feba @ Apr 22nd 2009 5:04PM
This is Japan. You'd be a fool to ignore the DS, PSP, and PS2 as part of the console market.
JXCgunrunna @ Apr 22nd 2009 5:27PM
Your math is horrible.
(1+3) / 8 =/= .6666
(1+3) / 8 = .5 X 100 = 50%
that would put MS at 12.5%, and sony at 37.5%.
those numbers are only this gen home console numbers. a fair test is to see how much play time goes into every platform in use over there including cell phones and basing it off of a combination of how many system are out there and how much they are played.
Nintendo didnt claim those numbers anyway, Enterbrain did.
Dante G @ Apr 22nd 2009 5:39PM
In order to please Feba:
Using VGChartz numbers:
Ninendo (Wii+DS) -- 47 %
Sony (PS2 + PS3 + PSP) --51.77%
MS (360) -- 1.39%
The ps2 is the one that gives sony the edge in those calculations because it has sold over 22 million consoles in japan.
@JXCgunrunna
You should divide by 12 not by 8.
1 + 3 + 8 = 12
Happy_man @ Apr 22nd 2009 5:49PM
JXC your math is horrible, I suggest you use a calculator. Look let me explain, 8+3+1=12, you with me so far, now divide 12 from 8, you get 66.6...%, 12 from 3 is 25%, and 12 from 1 is 8.33...%, if you add the % you get 99.9...% or in other words 100%. Now lets add your percentages.
JXCgunrunna @ Apr 22nd 2009 6:16PM
well shit.... what a stupid mistake. my bad.

meekzzz @ Apr 22nd 2009 5:49PM
how could mario galaxy not be on that list? that's so sad...
Mr Khan @ Apr 22nd 2009 6:11PM
It went on to do fairly well, despite a comparatively lacklustre launch. Just not well enough to beat these juggernauts.
Mr Khan @ Apr 22nd 2009 6:13PM
It should find new strength in Japan this year, considering that its getting a lot of the big stuff in that region that comes out. The only thing as big that the competition's got left are Final Fantasy XIII and Versus XIII (and i suppose Vesperia PS3 version), and disregarding anything Nintendo themselves are drawing up.
BPMOmega [gamertag] @ Apr 23rd 2009 2:46AM
Now I know why Wii Play keeps selling...
Vegeta keeps breaking all the packed-in Wii Remotes!
