AvP2 had some kick ass multiplayer. Dropping down from the ceiling on other people as an alien was awesome.

Actually, you're both correct. Killing off marines as an Alien or Predator is pure win anyway you slice it. :D

It wasn't great, but c'mon...it was way better than the first. At least there weren't people running around in the Antarctic night air wearing nothing but a tank-top.

I'm pick'n up what you're putt'n down, Dirty. That last one was so terrible!
Make a new Alien and make a new Predator flick. You don't have to combine them all the time now!

At least the games were awesome! I hope they keep that level of suspense and fear in the new one.

Uncle Jesse,

Here's the thing, though; there's no logical reason why an AvP movie can't be made without being so awful as to make an entire audience attempt seppuku. With the first movie, Fox made the mistake of turning over the reigns to Paul W.S. Anderson (a man who couldn't write or direct a decent movie if the fate of the world rested on his scrawny shoulders); the moment I heard his name was attached in any way outside of being some actor's coffee monkey, I literally had a "face-palm" moment and turned to a bottle of schnapps for comfort. With the second, the made the mistake of turning the reigns over to two special effects artists who had no directorial or screen writing experience; while I appreciate the lengths they went to in terms of practical special effects (as opposed to CGI), it was still like watching a car carrying your loved ones getting hit by a train.

There are three things needed for a successful AvP movie: a competent director, a good script, and actors who actually do their profession some justice instead of being screen occupying meat puppets with the dynamic personalities of tree stumps. There are a number of great directors out there (unfortunately, not all of them will work for Fox *cough* Fincher *cough*). As far as the script is concerned, all that one literally has to do is to use the first AvP comic published by Dark Horse as his source material ; it's very Cameron-esque in terms of quality. Third one's a little tough, but I'm sure a decent cast can be found.

Hey Jackal,

I would like nothing more than to see an AvP movie done right. Unfortunately, I just don't see it happening and would prefer to see each franchise return their respective past glory. I just can't see any 'real' talent signing on to these ventures anymore after the way they are perceived from the first two movies. Look at the directors the Alien franchise had...some big names there indeed. You think Scott or Cameron are going to want to direct AvP3? Hell no! But if they brought back the Alien franchise to the same style of film as the first? Maybe. And take Predator back as well. I'm not suggesting reboots, I hate that everything is rebooted these days. But taking it back to formula, reviving it, showing the fans and newcomers how awesome it can be still - that is what needs to happen. They should try and concentrate on the franchises separately. They need to get each of these franchises going again on their own, then try and cross them again when it's ready. Don't force it.

@uncle jesse

I think with Aliens at least, a partial-reboot is necessary. Alien was great. Aliens was indescribable in its awesomness. Alien 3 was a train wreck and Resurrection...let's not even go there.

Killing Hicks and Newt was irresponsible and ultimately stupid. Especially considering the three comic series (Aliens: Volume 1, Aliens: Volume 2 and Aliens: Volume 3 - Earth Wars) that picked up immediately after the end of Aliens (movie) and continued the story with it ultimately culminating in a fight to reclaim what was left of earth from the xenomorphs.

With such an amazing story, why Fincher single-handedly destroyed the franchise I'll never know or understand.

Reboot and disregard everything after Aliens. Take the story from the comics, modify it a bit as needed and lets continue this franchise the way it SHOULD have been continued.

PLEASE FOX.

What with his second sentence begining with "secondly" I'm more inclined to believe he meant "First [of all], YAY!" (either about the game or the pictures)

Not "First [post], YAY!"

But yeah, sure, epic first-fail or whatever.

It's a crying shame it'll be a console exclusive; the legion of fans the previous two PC games has garnered has been eagerly waiting years for another title in the series to come along (especially since the second was nothing short of mind numbing awesomeness for when it came out). Come on, Sega, don't hold out on us.

I liked the multiplayer in the first AVP...there was a horde-like mode where you start at a crashed ship and make your way through a cavern to a little shack in a big crater.

oh man, AvP2 was one of my all time favorite deathmatch experiences!

I loved being an alien, especially face-hugger mode. Man, those marines never knew what hit them.

The best was seeing the marines all huddling back-to-back trying to fight the lunging horde. Freaking SWEET.

This should come to PC as the first two were PC masterpieces.

Some favorite moments:

1. Being a Marine, getting scared shitless because the motion sensor is going off, then realizing it's just a rope swinging in the wind.
2. Immediately getting killed from behind while inspecting said rope.
3. Playing as a Facehugger, infecting someone, then EATING YOUR WAY OUT OF THEIR CHEST WHILE THEY SCREAM IN PAIN to go to the next stage.
4. Multiplayer in AVP2 with Queen Mode and armored suits active.
5. The Smartgun. 'nuff said.

superkyle,

I think it's quite unfair to blame Fincher for how Alien 3 turned out for the following reason: Fox was, on an almost daily basis, making substantial changes to the plot of the film as well as its setting. Did you know the film was originally supposed to take place on a giant space station populated by monks that, were more or less, futuristic Buddhists? And that Hicks was supposed to have been one of the lead characters? When Fincher started expressing resistance to their constant meddling, they delivered an ultimatum that basically said, "Either you play ball with us on this or we're going to kick your ass to the curb in favor of someone who will." Hell, the studio even screwed him when the film went into editing; they made substantial cuts to the movie, eliminating some extremely interesting sub-plots and changing how the audience perceived certain characters entirely. Remember the inmate who kept rambling on about a "dragon" after his partner gets killed, right before Ripley's doctor love interest meets his end? You think he's just a simpleton scared completely out of his mind, right? In the extended cut, he's revealed to be bat shit crazy and actually starts worshiping the alien as some sort of deity. The inmates actually succeeded in trapping the alien in this version, but he releases it.

Even the origin of the alien itself is changed; in the theatrical release, it's a dog. In the extended version, it gestated in one of the oxen used to pull the EEV Ripley crashed in. The facehugger was different. In the theatrical version, it looks like a normal parasitic critter; in the extended version, an inmate finds this:
http://aliens.wikia.com/wiki/Queen_Facehugger
It was A) quite a bit bigger than its common brethren, B) black, and C) had webbing between the legs. It much better explained the twin alien infections since it was, obviously, something special.

Considering what he had to work with given the studio's constant meddling and total lack of support, Fincher's movie turned out to be quite good for what it was. But, he'll never work with Fox again and is probably the movie's most venomous critic to date. That should tell you something about the environment he was stuck working in.

Yeah, I'm aware of all that, but I guess it's just easier to blame him than Fox, though it's entirely unfair.

I have the Quadrilogy (got it the day it came out :D) and watched the extended version (not Director's Cut as they poiinted out in the book because he had nothing to do with it...I believe he even outright refused to have anything to do with a recut of the film because he was still bitter about it, though I could just be pulling that out of my ass).

Even with the additional ~40 minutes I still found 3 to be incredibly lacking. It didn't help that I found the CGI laughable most of the time, too, but it felt like way too much of a second-rate rehash of the first movie (one alien, tight quarters, no weapons).

I think I'm always going to hate 3, mainly because regardless of whose fault it is, it was the beginning of the end for the Alien franchise. At least from a movie perspective. I still can't get over the fact they completely ignored those comics. Aliens Vol. 1-3 are just incredible. It would've made for such a fantastic movie (or even pair of movies to be honest).

/sigh

I guess I can only hope that one day Aliens will get a Batman-esque partial reboot, too.

Also: I read Whedon's original screenplay for Resurrection, too, and am completely appalled with how the final movie turned out. What a waste of his talent.

Fox doesn't deserve these franchises, that's for damned sure.

And why do the Alien games keep getting crapped on?! There is a loyal fanbase that will buy ANYTHING with AL()ENS on it. STOP SCREWING US, DAMN IT.

Nuts magazine? Nuts magazine?!?

Why on earth would a developer give an exclusive to a magazine which only dedicates half a page of space to games per issue, when there are literally dozens of gaming magazines which are far better, and more widely read by gamers?

That makes no sense at all!
