Joystiq impressions: BioShock 2

Click to Big Daddy-size
How do you follow up what's indisputably one of the best games produced this generation? In the case of the BioShock 2 team at 2K Marin (and its collaborators at 2K Australia), the answer seems to be, "You don't change much." Having absorbed every possible bit of info on the game going into our first walkthrough of it, we felt like we knew what to expect; and, more or less, we got it.
In an all-too-brief demo that lasted maybe 12-15 minutes, we were taken on a guided tour of a level designed especially for this meeting to A) show off a variety of new elements and B) completely thwart any attempts at learning more about the plot. We were a little saddened by the latter, since in a sequel that seems very similar to the original in many visual and gameplay respects, it's really going to be the narrative that defines the experience.
Gallery: BioShock 2
The Big Sister ran along the window looking like a boss out of a Metal Gear Solid game. |
There seemed to be little rhyme or reason to what she was saying, apart from the fact that the Big Sister was lurking about and could strike at any moment -- and that she had to be stopped. As we were taken down a series of hallways, we'd catch a glimpse of her zipping around a corner, or maybe just her shadow.
This part of the walkthrough seemed mainly designed to drive home the fact that the player character, despite being a Big Daddy, is fast, and that since the game once again takes place in Rapture, the art direction was very similar -- although, as we were told, it plays out in entirely new areas of the city. (Players will see glimpses of areas from the first game, and what's become of them during the 10 odd years that have passed.)
The Big Daddy was hit square in the face by the Atlantic Ocean. Good thing he can breathe underwater. |
Cracks formed in the glass and water began spraying into the room under tremendous pressure. The window finally gave entirely and the Big Daddy was hit square in the face by the Atlantic Ocean. Good thing he can breathe underwater. This was a chance for us to see one of several areas set on the seabed outside of Rapture. It looked stunning and was teeming with sea life. We were told there will be no combat during these sections; that they're basically a respite from the horrors of Rapture.
After passing through an airlock the player-Daddy was back inside, where our attention turned to a struggle between a Little Sister and a splicer cast against a wall in silhouette. The dev piloting the demo entered the room and gored the splicer with the Big Daddy's drill (which, as it turns out, overheats so as not to be utterly unstoppable).
We spotted a dead Big Daddy, which the Little Sister seemed to be trying to "wake up" to no avail. She turned and saw the player and seemed happy to see another "Mr. B." This was, as we were told, a "Little Sister adoption" moment; much like the help / harvest choice of the first game, there was a choice to adopt her or harvest her ADAM. The demoer (thankfully) chose the former. (Little Sisters will eventually become unable to harvest any more ADAM, at which point players will be able to harvest them -- evidently the most "evil" action in the game.)
With her on the Big Daddy's shoulder, the demo moved on to another room, this one with a glowing dead body on the floor. She pointed out that it was an "angel" -- a dead splicer ripe for ADAM harvesting. Here was a look at another of the game's changes: the siege scenario. It takes the Little Sister a set amount of time to harvest ADAM, displayed as an on-screen gauge. While she's doing so, the game's seemingly much more aggressive splicers will try to stop her and kill the player. (We seem to remember them being a bit afraid of Big Daddies in the first game ... )
Flaming bees? Maybe. Frozen fire? Definitely not.
|
The splicers arrived on the scene en masse and it was time for a (rather large) fight. We watched as a powered-up Incinerate plasmid sprayed out of the Big Daddy's palm like a flame thrower. At the same time, he (how do we know it's not a she?) plugged away at them using a rivet gun and charged up an armed-mounted drill to rush the goons.
After they'd all been dealt with, ominous music was cued (the game's score is by the same composer as the first's) and the Big Sister -- who the Little Sister said "didn't want us playing with her" -- landed on a large globe in the middle of the room. We had mere seconds to stare into her glowing red eye before she leapt at the screen and it was demo over.
So, how did we feel about it? BioShock 2 is unquestionably, hauntingly beautiful and frightening, just like the first game. It also happens to look like the first game, and, in many ways, play like the first game. In fact, we still can't help but feel a bit like we were seeing a downloadable expansion. Granted, the demo was very brief and there's definitely much more to be revealed. Given how superb the first game was -- and how much of it seems to have rubbed off on the sequel already -- our hopes are already pretty high.
Like we said: given the many similarities, much will depend on the plot puzzles, and the overall experience 2K builds for the sequel. We've been left eager to see more -- a lot more.

DO WANT!
kevshas @ Apr 23rd 2009 2:01PM
Umm you do know what your avatar is don't you?
Mark @ Apr 23rd 2009 3:16AM
ME WANT TOO!
Looks like they are making good use of the criticism the first BioShock received. Hope the narrative is good.
But anyway, this is worth keeping an eye on for sure.
Vegnagun bwf @ Apr 23rd 2009 9:56AM
How does it look like they are making good of the criticism the first game received? The point of the article was that it felt exactly like the original Bioshock. From all accounts it seems like 2k Marin just played through Bioshock and set forth making a sequel with possibly better gameplay.
Alvin @ Apr 23rd 2009 3:17AM
now would you kindly release this game already?
Foetoid @ Apr 23rd 2009 4:52AM
No, please don't! I still haven't finished the first game!!! Stupid Wii and stupid Titan Quest hogging my gaming hours :(
FdUmCh @ Apr 23rd 2009 9:26AM
ya i'm the same still have to finish the first. got stuck a good few months back and have not picked it up since but all the news of the sequel makes me want to pick it up and play
Jerk Face @ Apr 23rd 2009 10:11AM
Step 1) Put down the wiimote.
Step 2) Fail less at finishing Bioshock
Step 3) Rapture (The state of being, not the city)
joe @ Apr 23rd 2009 3:19AM
At the bottom of the ninth paragraph it says "thankfully chose the latter" from the context of the next paragraph it's obvious you should have said "chose the FORMER". Just a heads-up.
dgknight500 @ Apr 23rd 2009 3:33AM
I saw that. At first I thought they shared my own tastes and killed the b****...
Guess not
Randy Nelson @ Apr 23rd 2009 3:49AM
D'oh, Joe! Now I guess you know what I wish they'd really done during the demo. :)
Pos @ Apr 23rd 2009 3:20AM
Looks like Bioshock 1.5 too me. Will play it anyway because the art style of Bioshock is beyond this world. Fantastic game!
Max @ Apr 23rd 2009 3:31AM
Seriously? I'm starting to get pretty pissed at how all of Joystiq's reviews are so lack luster and completely apathetic. Even for this game, one that's been long awaited and incredibly hyped, and Randy can't help bash it for being too much like the original. What?! The original was hailed for being amazing. I can understand bitching about a new sonic game that uses a 3D plain after countless failed 3D sonic games, but bitching that the demo was practically unsatisfying because it follows the previous game's perfect formula [read: score 10/10] is a bad thing is unbelievable.
Let's complain about how the next sim game builds on previous implementations and that despite new content, it still feels like a game where you control a fake person.....
You know why you wouldn't do that? Because that's the GAME. That's what you WANT to play.

Powaqqatsi @ Apr 23rd 2009 4:20AM
You obviously didn't finish the article. Either that, or you don't understand English very well. He never referred to the the similarities to the first game in a patently negative way. The only complaints he had about the demo was that it was too short and didn't reveal enough of the plot. What article are you trying to comment on?
Foetoid @ Apr 23rd 2009 4:54AM
+1 Powaqqatsi. I read the whole review and read nothing at all negative about the game or it's similarities to the original. Perhaps he WAS reading a different article.
Mike @ Apr 23rd 2009 9:46AM
Guys, it's not a review, it's an impression of a short demo. You all are silly.
Vegnagun bwf @ Apr 23rd 2009 9:48AM
Are you people aware that this isn't a review? It's a preview discussing 15 minutes of gameplay. Try reading articles first if you're going to make baseless accusations so that you can at least have a semblance of merit in your post.
caserb @ Apr 23rd 2009 11:46AM
Here Max, let me redo the 'review' in Max-O-Vision:
In an all-too-brief (but TOTALLY AWESOME) demo that lasted maybe 12-15 (SPECTACULAR!) minutes, we were taken on a guided tour of a level designed especially for this meeting to A) show off a variety of SUPER COOL new elements and B) completely thwart any attempts at learning more about the RAD AND TOTALLY SECRET plot. We were a little saddened (JUST A LITTLE, WE JUST REALLY WANT TO SEE THE BADICAL PLOT IN ACTION) by the latter, since in a FANTASTIC sequel that seems very similar to the original in many visual and gameplay respects (AND THAT BY THE WAY, IS AN AWESOME THING NOT A BAD THING), it's really going to be the FANTASTIC narrative that defines the ULTIMATE experience.
Man, that took way too much energy. I think I'm done with that.
kentuckyfried @ Apr 23rd 2009 3:53AM
I don't care if this is Bioshock 1.5. Bioshock was already a great game, and if this game can follow in its footsteps and mend some of the weaknesses, then I'll be more than happy.
Things that bothered me about the first game:
1) Seemed to run out of steam in terms of interesting level designs mid-way. Lots of levels seemed to feel very linear
2) Controls not that responsive. You could always fire a weapon or use plasmids, but invariably the two could never cross over (one would cancel the other out if timing was bad). That's a no-no and makes for alot of frustration, esp. since plasmid power was always running out so quickly.
3) Terribly short ending after a long gameplay experience. This is where every developer seems to be dropping the ball lately. There should be something worth struggling for at the end besides a paltry 30 second video ending.
I'm sure I'm forgetting stuff but those are the few things that quickly come to mind. If 2K can make a compelling narrative that ties into the first game, it'll be a first day purchase.
Slaziman @ Apr 23rd 2009 4:31AM
Broken subtitles pissed me off, as some dialogue is hard to catch if you're not a native speaker.
Cosmo @ Apr 23rd 2009 10:03AM
The ending really did piss me off, the final boss was far too easy and the ending far far too short for such a great game. : (
joe @ Apr 23rd 2009 3:58AM
freudian slip. i knew you guys at joystiq were evil!
iBirch @ Apr 23rd 2009 4:29AM
Looking forward to this game played the first one thought it was amazing. I'll be keeping my eye on this one.
prodigy69 @ Apr 23rd 2009 4:30AM
what's all this Bioshock 1.5 rubbish...I'm sure as soon as this game comes out you'll all be on the 'omg this game is so awesome I'm a massive fanboy wagon'
I for one will welcome you on-board when that day comes..
brytdavis @ Apr 23rd 2009 5:05AM
Ooooooooo, can't wait to get my plasmids fired up again .... maybe I'll take Bio1 for a spin to warm up ... sweet!
Rick @ Apr 23rd 2009 7:06AM
I'm looking forward to this one, but I have a nagging question:
If this takes place 10 years after the first game, what is all this hoopla about you playing as "the first Big Daddy"? Are you stuck playing as this Big Daddy the whole time? I'll be interested to see how they can pull this off without it seeming stupid.
Adam @ Apr 23rd 2009 3:02PM
You are the first Big Daddy 10 years on because he was alive before the events in Bioshock, and carried on living to when this game is set.
Slaziman @ Apr 23rd 2009 7:18PM
It's probably some prototype Big Daddy that's more powerful but was not used as the final design because it was too expensive to massproduce or some other excuse.
Poisoned Al @ Apr 23rd 2009 7:47AM
While it sound like more of the same, is that really a bad thing? But yeah, little details that brake the rules of former titles are irritating. If you're a big daddy, splicers should run from you, or at least try to take you out from a "safe" distance.
tcc3 @ Apr 23rd 2009 8:34AM
What he described seems reasonable, especially if its a gang of splicers. Splicers need adam, the Little sisters have it. Nobody said addiction was a reasonable proposition.
Several times in the first game I saw dead Big Daddy's - presumably splicers killed him for the sister and her adam.
Vidikron @ Apr 23rd 2009 9:58AM
"If you're a big daddy, splicers should run from you, or at least try to take you out from a "safe" distance."
I saw Big Daddies fight splicers at melee distances several times in BioShock.
Poisoned Al @ Apr 23rd 2009 10:39AM
Meh, I think that was the AI being dumb more then anything, but I think tcc3 has a point. Junkies do some pretty stupid shit to get another fix.
Vidikron @ Apr 23rd 2009 11:56AM
Could be... they were pretty agressive if anything hit them or got too close to a Little Sister they were escorting. The Big Daddies even killed one of the "boss" characters for me. Remember that guy you had to track down in the bar (I think it was a bar). IIRC, he threw molotovs or something while you had to chase him through part of Rapture. Well, the guy managed to hit 2 Big Daddies with molotovs during the chase and both of them joined the chase. They ended up killing the guy and I never had to do anything.
FatalChaos @ Apr 23rd 2009 7:49AM
I have a question hopefully it can be answered, did you gys have a choice on which version you demo'ed? From the screen buttons it looks like the xbox version, was looking to see some PS3 version screens.
Anywho I can't wait for the game to come Bioshock is by far one of my favroite shooters out there easily top 3!
CannabisPrime @ Apr 23rd 2009 8:39AM
Just pretend that it says triangle and square instead of Y and X.
Billop @ Apr 23rd 2009 8:54AM
Joystiq are very Pro Xbox so expect to see a LOT of 360 screens here. There have been ever since the site Merge anyway.
CannabisPrime @ Apr 23rd 2009 9:06AM
Yeah, Joystiq is pro Xbox because the developers of the game ran a demo for them on the 360.
I'm sure the Joystiq crew went in there and demanded the developers ran the demo on the 360 instead of the PS3, and it had absolutely nothing to do with the developers who were showcasing the demo.
arrrgh @ Apr 23rd 2009 9:25AM
cannabis wins
FatalChaos @ Apr 23rd 2009 9:31AM
Nevermind on the question, I forgot that anything xbox can't be mentioned on a PlayStation related website.
MariusElijah (Only on PlayStation 3) @ Apr 23rd 2009 12:06PM
Im gonna pretend Cannabis isnt being sarcastic
deaftly @ Apr 23rd 2009 12:45PM
Why do the sony fanboys always come off as the most retarded out of the 3?
Jack Spicer @ Apr 23rd 2009 1:33PM
At least Sony fanboys still know a good game takes time.
I would look at the games selling the most anyways, WiiFit? Does Nintendo have to tell people to do everything. Looking forward to the next one, WiiManners (comes with a table and chair to check posture and elbows), WiiTie (for kids with shoe laces and adults for neck/bow ties), and of course WiiPrison (prison simulator to scare people, dont drop the WiiMote!)
mynk @ Apr 23rd 2009 7:47PM
you guys realize this demo was DEVELOPED only for a demo.
do you really think the developers would make a mere demo multi-platform
the effort on ps3 and cost are both higher to develop,
and for a demo that would be exactly the same on the 360
why wouldnt they?
Geist @ Apr 23rd 2009 9:13AM
Did you just say that Bioshock was the best game of the generation? Really? SIgh. It was pretty good, as far as a upgraded remake of System Shock 2 can be, but the best game of the generation?
And oh good, they've taken the worst part of the first game (being a big daddy and protecting the little girl) and apparently made it the entire game. Great, I can't wait.
Vidikron @ Apr 23rd 2009 10:01AM
It clearly says "one of the best".
arrrgh @ Apr 23rd 2009 9:24AM
are kids going to cry that it's not different enough like with Gears2?
el serpiente @ Apr 23rd 2009 12:09PM
Uh, weren't people bitching about the broke-ass multiplayer?
james @ Apr 23rd 2009 12:14PM
that's exactly whats going to happen. but luckily this is multi-platform so people will be crying to no one but themselves.
Vcize @ Apr 23rd 2009 3:33PM
Gears 2's biggest fault was that it was TOO different.
Maulok @ Apr 23rd 2009 9:28AM
I'm very nervous that adopting Little Sisters turns the game into one big escort mission. Like that later scene in Bioshock 1 (spoilers) where you become a big daddy and have to protect the little sister from the barrage of splicers while she harvests from corpses. I absolutely hated that sequence.
