Microsoft's third quarter may not have been the hotness, but the company's entertainment and devices division (that's Xbox) can have a very tiny fiesta to celebrate its sales victory. The mega-corp's revenues took a 6% beating, with net income down 32% over the prior year to $2.98 billion. The Xbox's (Zune, etc.) entertainment and devices division lost 31 million this quarter, after achieving a $106 million profit during the same time last year.
On a happier note -- and pretty much the only relevant part for gamers -- the Xbox 360 console sold 1.7 million units during the quarter, an impressive year-over-year increase of 30 percent. The company also claims that the current tie ratio for the console is 8.3 games per owner. The company's chief financial officer said he was happy with the results given that this is the "most difficult economic environment" in the company's history.

austin is correct. It goes 360 >>> PS3 > Wii.
The 360's higher tie ratio is largely to do with it being out a year long. The tie ratio zof a console naturally increases the longer a console is on the market, as people who bought the console in its first year carry on buying games every subsequent year, driving the figure up.

Four years into the 360's life cycle and MS is still struggling to make a profit on hardware sales - this should be a wake up call to anyone who believes that console upgrade cycles will continue to happen along the same lines as over the past 20 years.
The next Xbox will be an incremental upgrade of the 360 with full backwards compatibility.

Your logic stinks like several day old fish left on the top of the refridgerator. So what your saying is, sales are low, so the next console will take longer to come out and only be an incremental upgrade.
Say, what?? I can agree with the full backwards compatability being a possibility since the xbox 360s backwards compabilility over the PS3->PS2 debacle is one of its selling poiints but why on earth would you imply that the next console will be an incremental upgrade?
Computers, especially ram, graphics cards and video cards, at a rate thats almost an exponential increase in processing power and strength year over year. So in purchasing a PC, the longer you wait to purchase your next pc, the more your new pc will outpower your old pc. If you said two years, the new computer may be 2x as fast as your current pc. If you waited four years, the new computer may be 4x as fast and if you wait eight years, your new computer may be 8x as fast.
If we won't be seeing the next cycle of the xbox 360 for a LONGER time and this hardware cycle for consoles lasts LONGER, longer equates to a more powerful future machine not a less-powerful machine. Therefore, its not logical to assume the next upgrade will be 'incremental'. Rather, we could assume the next upgrade would be 'substantial'.
Honestly, if you look at say the 4950 ati radeon card, its a $99.00 dollar card that performs nearly as good as the 4870. This $99.00 card is also about 4x as powerful as the video card currently in the xbox 360. In another 4 years from now, if thats how long you think the next generation of consoles will be delayed by the current depression, there's likely going to be a video card 16x more powerful at this $99.00 price point. So yes, just 16x more powerful. What an 'incremental' upgrade.

And Sony makes money on it's hardware?
Only Nintendo makes money on the hardware. Microsoft/ Sony make their money on the software licensing fees/ first party games.

What tension? It's 360 for multiplatform games (mostly because of achievements and better online) and exclusives and PS3 for their exclusives. Isn't that how it goes? I thought that was pretty much standard for people who have both.

I own both, and I have to say that I'll buy a title based on how it plays on each system. For example I bought Fallout 3 on xbox 360 because of the DLC, and Street Fighter 4 on PS3 because of the controller.
Odd thing, I hate my 360 so much now from having to send it in 9 times (its a Falcon Elite), that I just want to get rid of the thing and all its games. PS3 is good enough for me now.

Get outta my head Tmac. GET OUTTA MY HEAD!!!
Seriously though, that's pretty much hitting the nail on the head for me. 360 exclusives and multiplat (especially multiplayer) games on the 360, and exclusives on the PS3. And that's not undermining the PS3, because it has some sweet exclusives (with inFamous, Uncharted 2, and God of War 3 on the way no less).

You know, as a Wii owner, it's fun to sit back and watch everyone else bicker about faulty hardware (well, Ps3 is fairly reliable from what i've heard).
*waits for Tmac to say something like 'As a 360 owner, it's fun to sit back and play some GAMES'*
While he's saying that, i'll be laughing, thinking of all the good games he's missing out on thanks to his arrogance and ignorance.

Last gen, I used my Gamecube to play all the exclusives and multiplatform games (Gamecube had better graphics than the PS2)... games like Viewtiful Joe or Resident Evil run at a better framerate and with better effects...
This gen, the 360 is the one that gets the exclusives and multiplatform games, because they offer more value for the same money as the PS3 and Wii multiplatform games: way better online, achievements (I don't care for achievements, but still, it's an added plus) and they generally run better than the PS3 version... plus, in my opinion, the analog sticks placement is way better on the 360 controller than in the DS3).
My Wii and PS3 are mainly for exclusives.

Fernando, why didn't you say the GC had better graphics than the Xbox 1. Both Prime games looked better than both Halos, and TP looked better than Fable 1. The GC had the power to have better graphics than the Xbox 1 thanks to the powerpc architecture, faster ram and coppermine CPU (even tho clockspeeds were lower). It was only the storage of the mini-dvds that meant multi-platform games were compressed and ugly.

Simple as this: first of all, get the component cables. The difference is very noticeable.
Then: just get this 2 games at first, just to test the system, and to get used to the pointer and motion:
Super Mario Galaxy
Metroid Prime 3
Then get the other games that you want to play.
